  • In this episode we’re disassembling the 16” SR15 upper to get it ready for the 6ARC barrel. We talk about the tools and methods to remove the Knights SR15 Mod 2 gas system and the URX4 hand guard.
    NOT SHOWN: in this video we were using our prototype SR15 Torque Rod in the barrel extension to remove the muzzle device and castle nut. The SR15 Torque Rod fits only the SR15 E3 barrel extension (does not fit SR25 or AR15 milspec extensions) and is available on our website in case you can't find a Knightstick.
    SR15 Torque Rod: www.sunnshadow...
    I bought the Mod 2 castle nut wrench from D. Wilson Manufacturing.

    Aluminum black will fix any scratches on anodized aluminum. Most gun shops carry it. Nice to see this taken apart. Thanks for taking the time.

    Very informative. I just received my new SR-15 CQB Mod 2 11.5" URG and was curious how the handguard comes off. I don't plan to disassemble my new upper but appreciated learning how it all goes together. Thank you!

    Cool mang! And yeah, it makes sense that the gas block and tube have to go in after the rail/barrel nut is torqued down. That channel that the gas tube passes through at the end of the rail before going into the receiver isn't stationary. :-)
    That said, I'm starting to see some of the things that Knights does to make sure these things are tough and stay together. Couldn't understand the cost before, but that's changing.

      I didn’t mention that specifically but that’s exactly the issue; the URX4 would interfere with the gas tube when trying to torque on or off.

    TY for posting this!!! With that handy D Wilson castle nut wrench.... it can be done.

      Sure thing! Was surprised that I didn’t find other vids during my search. From what I understand, there is actually a specific tool that Knights uses to pull the gas block (not my Allen wrench concept 😂) so there is a better way

    Awesome video, it’s looks easier to do than dealing with taper pins

    the castle nut wrench you bought from d. wilson mfg. - did you buy the narrow or wide version? i think i have the wide castle nut. it looks like it's a little more than .125, it looks like it's .178 (almost 3/16''). hard to get anything in there to measure. wilson has a wide available, no narrow in stock. also can't find the hanguard wrench anywhere though...

      My tool from D. Wilson is marked as the "wide" version. I believe only the very early versions of the Mod 2 system had the narrow tooth design, so they are uncommon. I don't have a good source for the handguard wrench unfortunately, although if you can find a brand new rail, I believe they typically came with the wrench and a shim kit.

      Spike's Tactical shims will work in 7.62 applications, I am not positive about 5.56 but it is worth looking into since the KAC shims are tough to find.

    was the handguard loctited on the receiver threads? Looks like it was some residue in the handguard threads?

    • @sunandshadow_llc
      @sunandshadow_llc  6 месяцев назад

      The residue is anti-seize.

    • @71firebird400
      @71firebird400 5 месяцев назад

      KAC specifies Loctite for URX 2/3/4 handguards and that is likely why the handguard gave him issues. I am not convinced the loctite is necessary, just a precaution.

    Good video!
    So can you switch out the handguard on an SR15 with any other handguard that has its own barrel nut?

    • @sunandshadow_llc
      @sunandshadow_llc  Год назад +1

      Yes, the receiver will accept other standard AR rails with a barrel nut.

  • @retirednobaddays456

    Thanks, interesting rifle. Seems like the standard AR hand guard and gas system is easer to maintain. I wonder why Knight's went with this nonstandard method?

    • @sunandshadow_llc
      @sunandshadow_llc  2 года назад +1

      After taking it apart and putting another one back together I don’t think it’s more complicated, but it is certainly a different process. The nut holding on the gas block was certainly easier to remove than taper pins!!

    Why would you buy a KAC upper and basically remove everything that makes it KAC? Genuinely curious. Why not buy a stripped upper and rail, then add your barrel and gas system to it?

    • @sunandshadow_llc
      @sunandshadow_llc  2 года назад

      This is a totally fair question, and I have several reasons.
      The main ones are 1) I’m still not sold on the whole 6ARC thing, and I can convert back to a 16” SR15 if I want 2) I now have a spare bolt and barrel for my other SR15s and 3) it was easier to find all the parts I needed together on an upper and make one purchase than to shop around, look for take-off receiver/charging handle/URX4.

    • @StefanSu91
      @StefanSu91 2 года назад +1

      @@sunandshadow_llc Gotcha. Does make sense to have a spare!

  • @submoa9278

    Are you going to have your new barrel threaded to use the KAC gas block and castle nut? I’m sure D wilson could do it.

    • @sunandshadow_llc
      @sunandshadow_llc  2 года назад

      I had considered this for sure. The MOD 2 gas system would be a cool feature on this gun. I opted not to do it as I’m not sure how 6ARC will perform for me yet and would like some time with the cartridge before I get into having custom work performed. Additionally, my Proof barrel is a rifle+1 system so I’d need to have a custom gas tube made to fit the MOD 2 gas block.

    KA makes great products but given their proprietary parts, lack of availability, and ungodly prices, I would rather to stick to a good quality mil spec rifles like DD or BCM, plenty of parts with affordable prices !!

  • @anthonycook2325

    use dental picks to pull the gas block forward

    • @sunandshadow_llc
      @sunandshadow_llc  2 года назад

      I had to hit these little bit to loosen it up; I don't think it would pull right off. Maybe a little carbon build up there. Once it was loose I was able to push out easily. Picks could work for that but the initial hits would likely need a brass rod.
