On September 26th 1997. Garuda Indonesia flight 152 crashes in low visibility while on approach to Medan Airport. The crew made a fatal mistake in making a wrong turn which lead them off course. The plane struck the treetops in rural Indonesia bring the plane down. All 234 people on board were killed in the crash.

Often a single error is not dangerous. Here it also wasn't, it was a multitude of errors that occured and all had to occur at once that caused the disaster.
That's true of almost all air accidents. Passenger aircraft are about as reliable as your toaster--even several connected errors usually are not enough to bring one down. You have to have a truly spectacular cascade of coincidental problems or crew/ATC mistakes for one of these accidents to happen.
Multiple error in this flight but the most reason lead to this incident was communication and poor teamwork from pilot. Another reason contributing to this incident was the airport where they went only use radar but upload every 12 seconds. Also during the last moment; the GPWS didn't sound(Contributing to this incident)
Weather is not the cause
@@generalkenobi5533well I guess I'm screwed. My toaster stopped working last week and I'm getting in a plane next week. Maybe I should get a new toaster before i go? 😂
In early part of the video when the tower makes incorrect callsign, they call "Merpati" instead of "Indonesia", there may be a small factor of the fact that Merpati was part of Garuda Indonesia group. Indonesians see them as "family".
Just FYI - Merpati has closed down their operation in 2014. And Garuda, despite winning excellent service awards almost every year, is now in the brink of bankruptcy, due to mismanagement
Mismanagement, corruption, and bribery in shapes of Ferrari Enzo heheh.
I binge watching these in a loop. Help.
Same here, ha. 👍👍😉
Same here mate...
Me as well; they’re dangerously addictive!
@@mandywalkden-brown7250 RIGHT?!?!
Right?! So nice to know I’m not the only one that gets drawn in and addicted to stuff like this! 🙌🏻
Most likely the smoke/smog is from burning the rice fields to prepare the fields for the next planting/sowing of rice. Happens in Thailand too. I don't think it's from forest fires.
Not only from that
There also forest fires too so the land can be planted some palm
Actually this is a peat swamp forest fire, so because the ground containing so much peat (proto-coal) not only the forest is burned, the ground too, that's why sumatran and borneo forest fire is tend to cause very thick fog and need months to be Extinguished
Also done to swathes of palm plantations for the same reason. The areas leading up to Medan have large palm and rubber plantations. The smog created by these plantations can and have been known to drift over to neighboring Malaysia and even Singapore as the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix can attest.
even as an indonesian, i agree with you that there are so many plane crashes in indonesia..
So many avoidable mistakes here,it's almost unbelievable that it could happen. I also wonder how such nonchalance can occur in an industry that is life or death.

i recently discovered this channel and i’m so thankful for that! thank you for such clear and well-edited videos! it’s hard to find these sorts of videos with voiceovers! (:
ur cute
My cousin's family lived opposite Captain Wiyogo in Bintaro, Jakarta. The forest forest fires and El Nino in 1997 definitely didn't help! My uncle was a captain on DC10 and 747 and another one of my cousins is a F/O for an A330, all for Garuda. Those were some very dark days in the late 90's - mid noughties. That said, Garuda's safety culture and standards have been enhanced significantly, much like how the same could be said for Korean Airlines in the 1980s.
Modern day Indonesian low cost carriers are indeed concerning, and it's a telling sign that I'd only ever fly on Garuda when Island hopping - Put simply, the demand for air travel on the archipelago has expanded the need for more flights, with lesser experienced flight crew combined with other time/cost pressures. Oh, that and the nation being bombarded with very pronounced weather phenomenon.
Great video - I remember the day this happened.
Thank you for your insight. It is very helpful! Stay safe
Yes definitely. I am Indonesian and I cannot trust any other flights other than Garuda to this day. Whenever my grandparents tell me I should go to Jakarta by lion air, I immediately rejected it. It’s a good thing I’m not living in Indonesia and having to island hop for many reasons anymore.
@@eggorl I had to say to my parents "pak, kalau mau murah, silahkan, monggo lion air... bisa dapet hadiah water landing juga" but I also said to my dad "you didn't pay a lot of money for me to do an engineering degree and not actually listen to what I have to say!" I don't compromise on safety, and at least there are at least a few airlines that have learnt from their past experience. But then again, you might also have a ketus captain who will be very arrogant (Jakub Van Zanten for example).
How about citilink? Its a owned by garuda.
@@noahthesarcastictd I've flown Citilink a handful of times and I've found them to be roughly on par with Air Asia. Truth be told, if things go well, you'll be fine. I've also flown Sriwijaya a few times too... also owned by Garuda.
But as tragic as air crash investigations are, the conclusions from their forensic analysis or human factors evaluations help inform what kind of safety culture an airline employs.
I most certainly don't want a pilot who pulls circuit breakers or resets vital flight controls in flight 🤔.
You do such a wonderful job! As much as I love aviation accidents I still don't know that much about aviation in general, and I never get lost when I watch your videos. Your visuals add so much too! Thank you for doing these
Thank you I'm thrilled you like my videos
Sounds weird for people to say they love aviation accidents
I think it would be better to phrase it as "I love learning the details behind what causes aviation accidents"

This channel is so underrated, pack with good quality content! Really love the way you explain in this channel. It would be great if you make a video about JAL flight 907 and JAL flight 958.
@@nidharsanviswanathan9955 yes my friend
I've always been nervous of flying, and here I am now watching all these videos. Did not help my fear of flying at all!! I know people say that its safer to fly than drive, but theres just something about being in a plane, knowing you are going down and nothing you can do about it. Its one of my biggest fears
Just remember, there's much less to run into up in the air.
you still are way more likely to die from going to the airport and from than flying
studies are made for a reason
@@kuro9410_ilust Studies don't always ease fears.
@@kuro9410_ilust yeah but you have more chances of making it out alive from a car crash than from a plane crash. There are less aviation incidents but the ones that have occurred have been deadlier right?
Even though I have flown previously to other countries I still have a huge fear of being in a plane crash. Hopefully these incidents happen less and less each year
Statistically, you would need to be fly 5 times every year for 2 million years to get into a plane crash.
When one of the recommendations is basically "do your job correctly" you know you have problems.
This channel is so good, and so many aircraft disasters that I was not aware of. Keep up the good work.
As many disasters as I’m familiar with, I’m shocked this was never on my radar.
Also, flying in Indonesia seems like traveling through the Bermuda Triangle.
Nothing mysterious, just kinda dangerous
As an Indonesian, i have to agree... You just have to pray the whole time that the plane doesn't just broke off or fall from the sky
@@aldy_fellowship_in_biology same here, Lion Air is basically the Ryanair of Indonesia, without the advertisements.
@@gerrard1144 i think lion air is more of spirit airlines with the delays but overall new fleets
I flew countless times with Garuda, Merpati, Sempati, Pelita/Caltex, and Lion Air since my childhood in the 80s. I never had any problems beside mild turbulence and terribll ear-ache (only in Lion Air). 😅 Garuda is still my favorite...especially when I saw the pilots are older/with white hair...I can expect the smoothest landings. 🛫 🛩
I think our national airlines had improve more and more since the 'p10s, hopefully we can shake the negative image off soon, because from personal experiences I do feel that other/neighbor countries' airlines still (just slightly) have better services than ours. Most particularly in the food sections, LoLoLoL. 🙏😊
@@gerrard1144
I thought that would be Adam Air. 😅 Lion Air IMO is more like Spirit in the US, but maybe I was wrong.
This video may not 100% correct. As I know there was confusion on cocpit about where they are when ATC instruct them to turn left. Crew consider they are already NORTH of airport while actually they are still SOUTH of airport. That is why when ATC instruct them to turn right heading 47, pilot turn fhe plane left because that is the correct turn if they are already NORTH of airport. This is why they confused whether they had to turn left of right.
Bener kok di jelasin di videonya 11:13 , 152 ngira itu di utara makannya belok kiri sedangkan atc ngarahinnya di selatan makanya di instruksikan belok kanan

Fantastic work!
Thanks a lot!
You deserve more sub!!
Another great video, I love your content, it’s super informative and you can see that the work that goes in pays off!!
It should also be noted that the air traffic controller distracted the pilots from monitoring their altitude because since the radar at Madan only updated every 12 seconds, he didn't even know that the pilots had turned the wrong way.
I love the channel, great work and very interesting stuff. Some may say it's morbid but it's just fascinating. I remember my kids giving me grief about watching air crash investigation, especially the night before we were due to fly..
Excellent video again :) Thank you so much!

Excellent research throughout the videos I've seen. Thank you for the hard work.
Indonesian aviation safety is pretty bad for an international standard, few weeks ago Sriwijaya Air just crash into Java sea north of Jakarta.
True..
we need tumbal
Yep
yeah idonesia has a bad safety record in the past. But about sriwijaya crash? we dont know yet and im afraid to give any conclusion for what happened there.
And indonesia have largest mro in the world
Another great upload. Thank you
Note to self: don't fly any Indonesian operated airlines.
Not all of the Indonesian operated airlines are bad
LOL not all indonesias airlines are bad, just don't take lion air
I'm indonesian and I can confirm that lion air sucks but not all of the other ones suck.
Garuda and citilink is okay but lion air and that other one that I can’t spell but operates 737 500s are just nope
Amazing quality!
I average 4 flights a month. Not sure if these videos make me feel better or worse lol. Just started watching them and my next flight is in a week
I hear you... LOL Before Covid I used to be a fairly frequent flyer myself (luckily for leisure, not for work), and I've been known to make good use of free wifi in the boarding area to watch videos about aircraft incidents and accidents... XD So at least if I ever go down with a plane, I can recite the possible causes of the crash while waiting for impact...
Nice!
Wow, their safety record is so bad they banned from flying in certain areas of the world? That says a lot
Well they do have 3 deadly incident
That's maybe what makes it got banned from EU and USA
Good thing it considerably improved and one of the first Indonesian airlines to be allowed to fly to the EU until the EU lifted the ban 2018
Great video, thank you! You have a nice voice.
Thank you.
Rip garuda indonesia, they recently went bankrupt... Well let's just say that leaves us with the leftovers of the pallet (the bad ones)
Very interesting.
This happened in my 17th birthday, my parents took me to a fancy dinner with some other family and they talked about this incident almos throughout the somber "celebration".
My cousins lost one of their aunt in the flight, the eldest of them(who at the time studied in a university in Medan) had to identify her solely by her familiar favorite purple batik dress, because (he said) the poor aunt had been decapitated and lost most of her limbs. It was a nightmarish experience he can't ever forget. I never knew the late relative personally (don't even remember how she looked like), but my cousin'sstories about the crash site and the bodies still haunt me to this day. 😢💔 RIP everyone and may their friends and families have found their peace today...
PS: I really appreciate your work, Chloe, now I can truly understand what happened that day. Hugs and kisses from one of your subscriber in Indonesia. ❤
Piano throughout most of the videos I've seen from this channel is too melodramatic. Maybe some ambient to reduce the overly pleasant funeral music vibe. Beethoven is likely appalled, lol.
Its sad for ppl killed... R.I.P...
Smoke is recorded as FU... Wow...
Fumes
Some of the abbreviations in METARs and TAFs come from English words and some from French. For example, rain (RA), snow (SN), and fog (FG) are from English while smoke (FU), mist (BR), and hail (GR) are from French. The ICAO is headquartered in Montreal, after all.
well presented, with approach animations and all🙂
.
but still not getting (as to) how it was 'fun' 🤔
it was a mini docu on crash investigstion.. where dozens died.
maybe you meant 'fulfilling' or satisfying.
.
Good work nonetheless🙂
So many errors conspired to bring down this plane! Sad to think that not all the causes of these errors have been corrected.
To this day there are still small pieces of that flight that still remain at the site undiscovered in Pancur Batu (the actual place where it went down)
At one time, Garuda did not have a very good reputation. They have vastly improved their reputation. At one time Garuda was banned from landing at any airport in The European Union. Since then, the ban was lifted.
Although not the biggest issue here, but why didn't the crew not respond back to the controller to verify their call sign instead of just not answering?
There was same call sign on that time but different operator, betwen garuda 152 & merpati 152. And that atc mistaken.
...concerning is one way to put it, yes. More like "Oh God the plane is shaking- is this it- is this the one- will this be the time I roll the dice and get on my final flight?" terrifying.
WOOHOO!
I don't understand the TAF on the 1st 6 digits number. Is that time and date or the wind direction and velo?
On a TAF, after the ICAO Aerodrome identifier there is a 6 number group followed by Z, which I the time date of publication.
Severely underrated channel
I was so confused when you said F U.
What a huge mistake!

@@Hachiae wtf
Unfortunately with all of the retirements and shortages in pilots and mechanics, AND ATC, I think we may be seeing an increase in accidents. Just being realistic.
What’s the music at 5:53?
could somebody check the relative safety record of Indonesia (fatal accidents/total flights)? after China and Russia, that country has a vast number of daily flights
Per 2022 its 40 incidents with fatalities since 2001
Yeah if you have to ask where the mountains are or where the airport is you might be over your head....
Our safety record is not the best tbh
In the recent years Iran also accidently shot down Ukrainian passenger plane, as it was expecting responce to her missile attack to US bases in Iraq....could you please do a video on that?
3:59 So if there's an A-check and a C-check...is there a B-check as well?
Yep👍🏻
A fail on situational awareness. Very sad situation....
Sorry, what?
"Hey guys, our low level basic backup NAVIGATION system has been a bit wonky as of late. Use at own risk. Everything else should be fine yeah? Right, we've got this!".
No set of circumstances could ever make this situation worse, clearly.

One good turn deserves another, but one wrong turn doesn't.
probable cause of accident is use the flight between, and from/to Indonesia and/or use of Indonesian air company.

@@peteconrad2077 good choice
Have flown on several Indonesian domestic flights. Garuda or Citilink are usually the best. Avoid Lion Air.
Btw, the new terminal at Soekharno Hatta airport is great.
Smoke is FU?
Can't disagree.
The amount of plane crashes that have been due to the pilots not trusting what their instruments were telling them is crazy. It will carry on the more pilots have the plane flown for them by computers.
I mean tbf with that many error reports I probably wouldn’t trust a damn thing the computer said lol
Never ever fly out of Jakarta.
Please no background music oh no.

Nvm I'm sixth which is super early because sombody did a reply to a comment
You'll get first comment next time. I believe in you.
So hoping that this flight controller is no longer in that position! Just saying!
6:14 well that's RUDE
In the period of 2019 till present Indonesia has improved its safety record regarding the airlines either on domestic or international routes. As i remember, the US is the only country which hasn't opened for us yet. European countries have accepted us though.
You should understand that Indonesian is the 4th most populated country in the world, and Indonesia is an Island Country.... So many people are flying across those islands every day in this country. Other Nations doesn't has so many people and doesn't need to travel by air because they aren't island country...
If you cant see shouldn’t you fly higher ?
Anyone here orang indo?
Kesini setelah denger berita Garuda bangkrut... :(
I hope one day there will be an alternate mode of transportation insteading of flying. I haven't flown on an airplane since 2016 and my fear of flying has only increased since then because of all that I know now. I hope that I never have to get on a plane ever again, these things are nothing but massive coffins in the sky.
you are far more likely to die on the way to your flight than in the air itself it has been mathematically proven
Yeah roads are much more dangerous, especially in places like Asia and South America. In the end travel is worth the risk (by far),any time you leave your house you risk death. A safe life is not necessarily a happy one.
That’s pretty sad you feel that way, you’re limiting your world view.
I do not always fly, but when I do, 99.9% of the time it's Qantas.. In its 100 years it has not had a single crash. Those budget 3 world airlines can go blow
alas, it’s a myth. They have.
