    Thanks man! This video saved me about $700. Local dealers were going to charge about $650 and they weren't going to change the water pump. Independent shops gave me estimates from $800-1000. FWIW the 2011-2012 Elantra Touring has the same drivetrain so this vid is applicable to those cars as well. Also, my car had 95,000+ miles on it when I replaced the original timing belt. The belt looked brand new still, so the 60,000 mile replacement estimate is probably at least a bit conservative.

    Thank you very much for diy video, I am in process of changing the timing belt, water pump, idler, tensioner, alternator belt and a/c compressor belt. Before i take out the old timing belt, i did place camshaft and crankshaft on the top death center position and checked it about 5 or more times.Came to the part of putting on timing belt.I started the timing belt by wrapping around at the crankshaft gear, pass the idler pulley and then wrapping the timing belt around the camshaft. Tied the timing belt to the right of UP hole so there is no slack and had a little slack on tensioner side. When i placed the tensioner hand tight before i started using the allen key to hold it and tighten it, I noticed that my the white mark on crankshaft does not align with finger on the body and the hole at UP sign camshaft have moved to the right about two or three mm. This is where i made a mistake, i put on the crankshaft bolt and turned about 2 revolution hoping to align the camshaft by turning the crankshaft. I forget to put the belt on when i turned the crankshaft clockwise .Now both crankshaft and camshaft are misaligned.
    The question is how do i realign camshaft and crankshaft to get "Top Death Center", knowing that the alignment between crankshaft and camshaft need to be in sync. Please provide some steps. Thank you.

    Thanks for posting the video. I've just completed the 200k kilometres timing belt / pulleys and water pump kit. My engine started first go with no error codes and runs well. However the belt was noisy. So I re watched your video and paid extra attention to the middle portion where you show the instructions ( my belt kit did not have any ) and the tensioner details and went back and set my tensioner as you showed with the pointer and bracket and it is now much quieter. It's difficult to see in the video but is absolutely vital. There are all sorts of forums on the net re: stories about belts being replaced professionally but are still noisy.
    Got to to pay attention to the details and read the manual. Well done and thank you.

Thought about doing it myself but there is no way I would be able to do it in one day, so may as well have it done my some pro.

    Changing the timing belt before it breaks or slips is a must to save the engine. It is an interference engine which means when the timing is off the cylinders strike the valves destroying them and damaging their drive. Starting in 2011 the timing belt design was changed to a timing chain which should last the life of the car. The Elantras given proper maintenance have a life of 250,000 miles. Elantras have been known to last up to 350,000 miles.
    You have all that labor shown to replace the water pump. So for $100 you just put in a new pump while you are in there. For $25 more you can get a kit that has a fan clutch in addition to the pump and gaskets.
    I want an Elantra but I would not buy one built before 2011 unless there was receipt showing the timing belt, and maybe water pump, replaced with the mileage.

    Great video! I am about to try to do this job myself instead of paying a fortune, around 700 for it. I'm concerned about the alignment of cam and crank. If these are in line as you showed, you are good to go, but once you put the timing belt on, if the marks are not in line, do you simply take off the belt and move either one? Thanks, Chuck

    • @ycmdill
      @ycmdill 7 лет назад +3

      If you are concerned and the old belt is not broken you can mark the old belt and gears then transfer the marks from the old belt to the new one. Both belts have the same number of teeth. Just kinda belt and suspenders method where you can use timing marks and your own for verification. Once you rotate the crank however your marks on the belt will not match again for many many many revolutions.

    this is crazy, this is teh second one of these vids i have seen with that upper time belt tensioner pulley having something on the back. mine does not have anything on the back. no spring, no cotter pin to set, nothing. neither did the old one I took off. now i am wondering how tight to do i make this with the allen wrench and why did they build this one without the spring
    i am going to go look at another i guess. i can set the tightness of the belt with an allen wrench but how tight to do I go? and since there is no spring it will never self adjust.

    Do you have to take off timing belt to change water pump?

    • @better_than_nothing
      @better_than_nothing 5 лет назад

      Short answer - No, there is no way to get the water pump off without removing the timing belt.
      Long answer/rant - It's an asinine design, but saves stupid people from having to replace their engine. Hyundai recommends replacing your timing belt at 60K miles. Water pumps will last 120-130K. Most people don't replace their timing belt till they replace their water pump. Even though recommended at 60K, most timing belts have no issues going the 120-130K a water pump will last. This is a forced maintenance period by the manufacturer, and it keeps stupid people from blowing up engines by breaking their timing belts and jumping time. It's a great design for a car targeted at poor and/or stupid people. My Cadillac CTS4 and Saab 95 Aero both have timing chains which are known to last up to 200K miles and beyond with regular oil changes, and they are both in the 300HP range. Sorry for the digression but these cars suck. I just did one on my mom's Kia.

      @@karnikkalani417 I would say it's definitely getting close to time for a new water pump and timing belt if you're at 130K. It really is a maintenance item that needs to be done at regular intervals. Because of the fact I keep my mom's car up, she'll probably get 300K out of her Kia.

      The intake and exhaust valves open into the same space the pistons travel as they reach the top. If the camshaft is not mechanically locked in timing with the crankshaft, they will crash into each other.

    • @EricFB
      @EricFB 8 лет назад +1

      I'll assume he used a gun. In a shop environment pretty much the only thing that ever sees a torque wrench is head bolts. If you want to torque it with a wrench however, take out a spark plug and roll the engine over until you see the piston coming up on the compression stroke (important as you dont want to bend any valves) and put a bunch of string in the hole, basically seizing the motor as the piston reaches the top of the stroke. I use an old pull cord off a lawn mower.
