My church choir is going to be performing this for our cantata this December. The vocal scores and consort orchestration CD both came in the mail today.
I looked at the conductor score and the piano accompaniment part is written in along with the other instrument parts. Is the piano accompaniment supposed to be played along with the rest of the instruments? It doubles a lot of parts, but still adds lower octaves that are not covered by the trombones or keyboard strings.
Yes, we typically write the piano accompaniment to double many of the instruments in our consort orchestrations.
We recognize that churches utilizing a consort have some instrumentalists, but, most likely, not a huge number. So, it is usually helpful to have the piano act as a “backdrop" for instruments that might be unavailable. So, the piano can be played throughout the entire score, or, if you prefer, you may ask the pianist to "lay out" during sections that feature available instrumentalists.
