I know most people can't do this, but in my house, in days of old, my cats had their own room. I paneled the walls with tough office carpeting, hung carpeted shelves around the walls, mounted carpeted 'false corners' so they could climb and sharpen their claws. Bird feeder outside the bay window for entertainment. their own couch to tear apart, washroom/bathroom, and a cat-door so they could enjoy the rest of the house as well. Although several of them did get big (Maine Coon - 28lbs. Russian Blue - 22lbs. Persian - 20lbs) They never got fat. All the exercise from climbing up to their favorite perch built muscle. Expensive, but the stud fees covered that.

Had a 'cat door' on the door to that room. they pretty much had the run of the house, but that room was all theirs and about the size of the living room, with a bay window so they could watch the birds in the feeders. Show cats require a LOT of attention from the time they are kittens. temperament is the biggest point maker at any show. When I came home, from work or shopping, about 20-30 minutes was spent just hugging each one of them in turn. Covered in cats all night. Made my first wife very jealous. We could be sitting on the sofa watching a show/movie, she'd go to the kitchen or bathroom, then come back to find me covered in cats. Loved those guys...

Gangsta cats are the best cats. I had one the my pit bull wouldn't even walk past in the hallway, but instead would sit and whine until I came and removed the cat to allow him safe passage. His dog bed was either shared with kitty or given over completely to him (and by "shared", I mean kitty got the center of it and lots of sprawling room to stretch out whist pooch squashed himself into a curled ball to try and fit on a little corner of it with him... Damn, I miss that cat... but 20 years is a good long life for an indoor/outdoor tom, I suppose.
***** I've read about some that have gone to 25 or even 30, but not many... The only two cats I have ever had have both lived that long. Both were local shelter adoptions, and having already had a taste of that wild outdoors, both were pretty insistent on being allowed outdoors for their whole life, too, despite my reservations for their safety. But either they have been wiser or I have been luckier than most since it was advanced age that was their eventual undoing rather than incident or accident.. I was pretty surprised that my first cat made it to 21, as I thought for sure she would die while I was away at college. But I was REALLY shocked to learn that cat food marketed as "senior" nutrition was designated for a cat only 7 years old. I figured that must make my cats REALLY ancient. I think it was because they could supplement their meals with the occasional mouse or bird that they hunted, I think it helped keep them healthier and leaner than cats who only ate store food, no matter how nutritionally "balanced and complete" they were purported to be. It's that much harder too though when they finally do pass away, as one gets so accustomed to having them around. My kitty succumbed in January to a combination of kidney and bowel ailments, maybe cancer, not really sure what was the final straw, but he was still wanting to be outside by the neighbors pool up to his very last day, despite that it must have taken him most of it just to get over there. I still see him out of the corner of my eye or hear him talking sometimes. I guess he could be haunting the place, but maybe I just miss him. Awww great, now I'm crying. I know everyone thinks their pet is special, but he was a really awesome cat. He used to be the talk of any new neighborhood we moved to, making friends with everyone so he could visit them and get snacks from anyone having a party. Every time we moved, the neighbors were always talking about "whose cat is that?" long before we'd have a chance to meet them ourselves. It may be a while before I can get another one without it living in his shadow, Meanwhile, though, I have learned that my Chinchillas, whom kitty was rather intrigued by and seemed to enjoy their company, can have a life expectancy of a couple decades as well. So I hope they will stick around a good long while too. I hadn't realized how intelligent those little guys were until my mom bought a couple off of Craiglist on a whim... They're neat. (Well, not "neat' at all, really -- they are actually pretty messy,.. but they are fun to have around if you are awake when they are...)
+UpRoaryus. My Miny succumbed to cancer this past July. Many times i call out to her when i open can of food meant for the other two cats. Never had anything so close die in my home. Whats even worse is people around me and work telling me to move on and get over it. I will never do either, and never forget her.
So sorry for you loss! It is still very fresh too, so I know how acute that pain must be right now. I can offer this much as comfort, though , small as it is: There will be a time when the pain of the loss begins to feel less imminent than the pleasant memories of the time that you spent together. It is not something we get over, any more than we can get over losing a parent or a child or a very dear friend, as we are all family. The love is what makes that true regardless of blood relation or even species. Love, though, is something we can always keep with us, even though we cannot keep everyone we share it with forever, When the loss is less immediate, the love begins to win over the sadness, and we will smile when we think back on the particular way family is, and how familiar we are with the sound or look or simple comforting presence of another who chose to be with us in our joy and sorrow to share it so that it would multiply or be lessened respectively, This happens with animals so easily that we miss how ungaurded we allow ourselves to be with them, since they do not judge us by how we measure up to some standard, and simply accept us as family. The lovely part is that the honor of such grace was granted us for a time. We were extraordinarily lucky to have been allowed to experience it. Animals live in that moment and do their best to remind us to take stock of the joy we are in, rather than looking for it in the future or worry about the past. We only mourn so much because we often forget to appreciate it for how amazing it is until we are reminded of what it is like without it and we are hard on ourselves with the regret for the times that slipped by unnoticed, but that only means that they have succeeded in making us present for much of that time we had with them, or we would not be so stricken by the difference. Pet owners laugh a good deal more often than those without animal companions, Just think if you had a dollar for each time your pet made you smile, could you even afford to buy all that back now all at once? My heart breaks when I lose a longtime friend like that, but only for a while, In time, whenever I think of them, I don't remember that day I lost them, I think of the countless moments we shared through the years that led to my having gotten so accustomed to the joy they brought and having so much that it was so devastating when it seems that we have lost it. But we don't really lose it ever. It will always be there for us because it WAS there, and nothing can take that love away even when we don't have such an obvious physical reminder of its presence. Your heart will realize that you have not lost that love, or the joy it brought you, and eventually you will feel only that joy when remembering how they were with you, There are so many more moments of pleasure and warmth to look back on than the pain you feel now, and in time, it will hurt less when you remember them, because you will see that they are never truly gone as long as you still feel that love and the thought of it can still make you smile. We are the lucky ones. Such great treasure is not given freely though, and this pain of loss is a small price to pay when compared with what we get from having them to lose. If it were not, I couldn't ever own another pet at all, but instead I know I am not quite complete without one. I would surely get lost in the inane world and lose connection with my own soul without my stupid dogs absolute insistence that there is nothing more important than THAT tennis ball, right THERE, right NOW, because OMG its the MOST AMAZING THING EVER, RIGHT? and I have to grin at his obsession and persistence and even his impatience with me for telling him not right now.... No matter how many buckets of tears I will be surely crying the day he is no longer able to bug me about that ball, they will never be enough to drown the smiles or make me willing to give those back so that I didn't have to shed the tears. No way. I need those smiles, now and later when I will look back on them fondly when I tell a story about how smart he was about making me get up to throw that damn ball again when I had shit to do... LOL I promise you that you will get through it, if not over it, and you will appreciate how blessed you were to be able to lose such a great joyful presence at all and the joy will still remain to fill that same space that the sadness fills now , like a flash flood is only temporary and sunny days are the norm such that no one would even know the streets had ever been wet. For of all the people in the world that your Miny could have spent her lifetime with, it was you alone that got to be with her, and you she chose to be with. She loves you still, but just can't be here to show it. Sometime in a next iteration somewhere, though, you will meet her again and it will be a joyous reunion. I had always felt that my Phantom had greeted me the first time we met as though he were being reunited with an old long lost friend, When he died, I felt like we had been through it all before, and he knew it would be a while before we could be together again. But I also understood why he had initially greeted me so warmly because I felt that I would recognize him too the next time we met, and it would be more like a reunion for me too, the way it was for him when he recognized me from some previous lifetime that day at the shelter and was so overjoyed to see me again. I know that even if my head forgets, m heart will not, and we will know each other as family immediately, even if we think we are strangers at first. And in the meantime, though I will miss his bossing me around, I will also smile when I think of how he would walk on the alarm clock-radio to trigger the button to wake me if his insistent poking and meowing didn't work to rouse me effectively. And I will never forget the way he looked exactly like a minature blue eyed panther covered in soot when I extracted him from the chimney ledge above the fireplace after he retreated there... or how he amazed me by staying put under the running faucet whilst I went in search of the shampoo to bathe him after that,,,, or how he complained about my trying to sneak another lather in after promising that the last one would be the last... Or ... well, you get the idea. It only hurts so much because the joy we had was so great. Maybe we need to be reminded of that through the loss or we would not appreciate how amazing it really is. Cheers to you and your Miny, till you meet again...

I've lost three dogs and one turtle, my first dog lived to the age of 18 and died quite close to Christmas, my second dog was either kidnapped or killed in some area far away from us (She was a street dog, one of the toughest in the neighbourhood, second only to this German Shepherd that once bit her) and we never found her, my third dog became violent and died at the age of three since the country I lived in was Third World and has only gotten worse, and my turtle was killed by his brother. Now that I live in another country, I adopted a dog and now a cat. The dog turned 4 in May, while my cat is only 10 months old. I adopted both of them when they were nothing but babies, and since they're my first pets that I've seen so young (My first dog was adopted 4 years before I was born, the street Alpha was adopted after she ran away from a nearby veterinary that later allowed us to keep her, and the other dog was a year old when my uncle adopted him.) except for my turtles, I am much more attached to them and when I lose them, my life will collapse. If I thought my other pets' deaths got me bad, this is so much worse. Their deaths will affect both my social life and my work life, but I'll keep your message in mind. Thank you.
Once upon a time, when I lived in Colorado, I had a couple dogs that stayed outside. During winter, I would often have to get up and take a hammer to their water as it was often frozen over each morning. One morning I finished breaking the ice so the dogs could drink only to find the house locked when I tried to get back inside. My cat was on top of the washer or dryer, in the utility room, near the rear door. He had apparently been spying on me in the back yard and inadvertently turned the lock and locked me out. This was before cell phones so I walked into town (just a couple of miles) and went to my wife's office to get a key to get back in the house. That was the last time I walked outside without having a key on me.

IF it gets older. I had a neighbour who overfed two cats and they both had heart attacks -- one was just 5 yrs old and the other was 8. I don't know how much they weighed but easily over 20 lbs each. Their vet had been giving them shit for years about how they were killing their pets. So sad. So infuriating.

I was pretty surprised that my first cat made it to 21, as I thought for sure she would die while I was away at college. But I was REALLY shocked to learn that cat food marketed as "senior" nutrition was designated for a cat only 7 years old. I figured that must make my cats REALLY ancient. I think it was because they could supplement their meals with the occasional mouse or bird that they hunted, I think it helped keep them healthier and leaner than cats who only ate store food, no matter how nutritionally "balanced and complete" they were purported to be.
It's that much harder too though when they finally do pass away, as one gets so accustomed to having them around. My kitty succumbed in January to a combination of kidney and bowel ailments, maybe cancer, not really sure what was the final straw, but he was still wanting to be outside by the neighbors pool up to his very last day, despite that it must have taken him most of it just to get over there. I still see him out of the corner of my eye or hear him talking sometimes. I guess he could be haunting the place, but maybe I just miss him.
Awww great, now I'm crying. I know everyone thinks their pet is special, but he was a really awesome cat. He used to be the talk of any new neighborhood we moved to, making friends with everyone so he could visit them and get snacks from anyone having a party. Every time we moved, the neighbors were always talking about "whose cat is that?" long before we'd have a chance to meet them ourselves. It may be a while before I can get another one without it living in his shadow,
Meanwhile, though, I have learned that my Chinchillas, whom kitty was rather intrigued by and seemed to enjoy their company, can have a life expectancy of a couple decades as well. So I hope they will stick around a good long while too. I hadn't realized how intelligent those little guys were until my mom bought a couple off of Craiglist on a whim... They're neat. (Well, not "neat' at all, really -- they are actually pretty messy,.. but they are fun to have around if you are awake when they are...)
+UpRoaryus. My Miny succumbed to cancer this past July. Many times i call out to her when i open can of food meant for the other two cats.
Never had anything so close die in my home.
Whats even worse is people around me and work telling me to move on and get over it.
I will never do either, and never forget her.
So sorry for you loss! It is still very fresh too, so I know how acute that pain must be right now.
I can offer this much as comfort, though , small as it is: There will be a time when the pain of the loss begins to feel less imminent than the pleasant memories of the time that you spent together. It is not something we get over, any more than we can get over losing a parent or a child or a very dear friend, as we are all family. The love is what makes that true regardless of blood relation or even species.
Love, though, is something we can always keep with us, even though we cannot keep everyone we share it with forever, When the loss is less immediate, the love begins to win over the sadness, and we will smile when we think back on the particular way family is, and how familiar we are with the sound or look or simple comforting presence of another who chose to be with us in our joy and sorrow to share it so that it would multiply or be lessened respectively, This happens with animals so easily that we miss how ungaurded we allow ourselves to be with them, since they do not judge us by how we measure up to some standard, and simply accept us as family.
The lovely part is that the honor of such grace was granted us for a time. We were extraordinarily lucky to have been allowed to experience it. Animals live in that moment and do their best to remind us to take stock of the joy we are in, rather than looking for it in the future or worry about the past. We only mourn so much because we often forget to appreciate it for how amazing it is until we are reminded of what it is like without it and we are hard on ourselves with the regret for the times that slipped by unnoticed, but that only means that they have succeeded in making us present for much of that time we had with them, or we would not be so stricken by the difference.
Pet owners laugh a good deal more often than those without animal companions, Just think if you had a dollar for each time your pet made you smile, could you even afford to buy all that back now all at once? My heart breaks when I lose a longtime friend like that, but only for a while, In time, whenever I think of them, I don't remember that day I lost them, I think of the countless moments we shared through the years that led to my having gotten so accustomed to the joy they brought and having so much that it was so devastating when it seems that we have lost it.
But we don't really lose it ever. It will always be there for us because it WAS there, and nothing can take that love away even when we don't have such an obvious physical reminder of its presence. Your heart will realize that you have not lost that love, or the joy it brought you, and eventually you will feel only that joy when remembering how they were with you, There are so many more moments of pleasure and warmth to look back on than the pain you feel now, and in time, it will hurt less when you remember them, because you will see that they are never truly gone as long as you still feel that love and the thought of it can still make you smile.
We are the lucky ones. Such great treasure is not given freely though, and this pain of loss is a small price to pay when compared with what we get from having them to lose. If it were not, I couldn't ever own another pet at all, but instead I know I am not quite complete without one. I would surely get lost in the inane world and lose connection with my own soul without my stupid dogs absolute insistence that there is nothing more important than THAT tennis ball, right THERE, right NOW, because OMG its the MOST AMAZING THING EVER, RIGHT? and I have to grin at his obsession and persistence and even his impatience with me for telling him not right now.... No matter how many buckets of tears I will be surely crying the day he is no longer able to bug me about that ball, they will never be enough to drown the smiles or make me willing to give those back so that I didn't have to shed the tears. No way. I need those smiles, now and later when I will look back on them fondly when I tell a story about how smart he was about making me get up to throw that damn ball again when I had shit to do... LOL
I promise you that you will get through it, if not over it, and you will appreciate how blessed you were to be able to lose such a great joyful presence at all and the joy will still remain to fill that same space that the sadness fills now , like a flash flood is only temporary and sunny days are the norm such that no one would even know the streets had ever been wet.
For of all the people in the world that your Miny could have spent her lifetime with, it was you alone that got to be with her, and you she chose to be with. She loves you still, but just can't be here to show it. Sometime in a next iteration somewhere, though, you will meet her again and it will be a joyous reunion.
I had always felt that my Phantom had greeted me the first time we met as though he were being reunited with an old long lost friend, When he died, I felt like we had been through it all before, and he knew it would be a while before we could be together again. But I also understood why he had initially greeted me so warmly because I felt that I would recognize him too the next time we met, and it would be more like a reunion for me too, the way it was for him when he recognized me from some previous lifetime that day at the shelter and was so overjoyed to see me again.
I know that even if my head forgets, m heart will not, and we will know each other as family immediately, even if we think we are strangers at first. And in the meantime, though I will miss his bossing me around, I will also smile when I think of how he would walk on the alarm clock-radio to trigger the button to wake me if his insistent poking and meowing didn't work to rouse me effectively. And I will never forget the way he looked exactly like a minature blue eyed panther covered in soot when I extracted him from the chimney ledge above the fireplace after he retreated there... or how he amazed me by staying put under the running faucet whilst I went in search of the shampoo to bathe him after that,,,, or how he complained about my trying to sneak another lather in after promising that the last one would be the last... Or ... well, you get the idea.
It only hurts so much because the joy we had was so great. Maybe we need to be reminded of that through the loss or we would not appreciate how amazing it really is.

I've lost three dogs and one turtle, my first dog lived to the age of 18 and died quite close to Christmas, my second dog was either kidnapped or killed in some area far away from us (She was a street dog, one of the toughest in the neighbourhood, second only to this German Shepherd that once bit her) and we never found her, my third dog became violent and died at the age of three since the country I lived in was Third World and has only gotten worse, and my turtle was killed by his brother.
Now that I live in another country, I adopted a dog and now a cat. The dog turned 4 in May, while my cat is only 10 months old. I adopted both of them when they were nothing but babies, and since they're my first pets that I've seen so young (My first dog was adopted 4 years before I was born, the street Alpha was adopted after she ran away from a nearby veterinary that later allowed us to keep her, and the other dog was a year old when my uncle adopted him.) except for my turtles, I am much more attached to them and when I lose them, my life will collapse. If I thought my other pets' deaths got me bad, this is so much worse. Their deaths will affect both my social life and my work life, but I'll keep your message in mind. Thank you.

Once upon a time, when I lived in Colorado, I had a couple dogs that stayed outside. During winter, I would often have to get up and take a hammer to their water as it was often frozen over each morning.
One morning I finished breaking the ice so the dogs could drink only to find the house locked when I tried to get back inside. My cat was on top of the washer or dryer, in the utility room, near the rear door. He had apparently been spying on me in the back yard and inadvertently turned the lock and locked me out.
This was before cell phones so I walked into town (just a couple of miles) and went to my wife's office to get a key to get back in the house. That was the last time I walked outside without having a key on me.
"...inadvertently turned the lock..." Hmmmm. You sure about that? I wonder how easy it is for anything without opposable thumbs to turn a lock "inadvertently". He may have been plotting the ultimate demise of you AND the dogs to have the whole place to himself! It's a cat; be wary... especially if you have stairs. IF it gets older. I had a neighbour who overfed two cats and they both had heart attacks -- one was just 5 yrs old and the other was 8. I don't know how much they weighed but easily over 20 lbs each. Their vet had been giving them shit for years about how they were killing their pets. So sad. So infuriating.
