Good point, MKH. Nathan is so much better at finding the holes in Trish's logic and making spot-on comments. I bet he would get a 6.0 if he ever took the GRE writing test on arguments. But Xin did give an explanation on this when some people in China commented that she was too "weak" during the debate. Her purpose was not to win the debate but to soothe the tension and provide more facts to the American audience.
Well, his perspective is broadly taken to cater the greater Western audience. But like deception you dont really know what is the target and the objective. In America it's all about " winning", other countries like China prefers subtlety to remain anonymous away from the public face and away from public outrage. Lester Chester Trish is no Tucker, and they only had 15 minutes, no in-depth discussion nor debate were shown. The rationale behind the trade war is a broad and complex topic, I believe both sides would have much more points to make if a proper debate was set up.

Her intent was to humiliate Liu Xin, she failed because Liu Xin was above her in class and upbringing. It's a different level altogether. Liu Xin was intelligent in her answers. There wasn't a debate because it was an interrogation meant to make Liu look bad. Trish ended making herself look bad, arrogant and condescending but her regular viewers won't be able to see the difference since they are the same breed.
As I watched this, I was struck by this being an "away game" for Liu Xin and a "home game" for Trish Regan. Ms. Liu was not speaking in her native language, where Ms. Regan was. Ms Regan also had the advantage of setting up or introducing the program, and the major advantage of being able to do an analysis after Ms. Liu is off the air. For any Chinese readers, forgive me for using a sports analogy. The phrases "away game and home game" refers to the advantage that a sports team has when playing in their own stadium or field or court.

I really like Lui Xin's just enough sized pearl earrings, especially the jade necklace. Better a broken jade than an intact tile. Plus, Lui Xin in this interview looks like she was the embodiment of kindness.
That is due to the lack of counter arguments from the Fox host. Perhaps she never intended to debate Liu or she simply had no arguments or facts to counter. If it was her usual show Trish would be passing her personal opinions and assumptions left and right as arguments, but its surprising how she didn't do that with Liu and noticed how her tonality changed from the usual aggressive type to a soft spoken and reserved one. I guess she realize this particular show with Liu has garnered many non American viewers and her usual crap won't be accepted by the rest of the world.
Liu was very nervous and uncomfortable, during the whole conversation she spoke very fast and with her eyebrows raised and pulled together, cause she was so scared, but scared of what or from whom? Please think about it.

In most Asian cultures, any educated person will not intentionally insult another person in a public setting. Being humble is basic courtesy. Protecting the "face" of your counterpart is important etiquette. Harmony is always preferred, making a friend is better than making an enemy. This is a great video and channel. Liked and subscribed.

Just like Nathan said, when she introduced herself, it's more in a Chinese greeting way, she's trying to be friendly and polite. However, compared to American's greeting way, it's too much, too polite to convince the audience she's nice. Instead, they might found, oh this woman was so weak that we can BULLY her. What's more, Liu's role is more a host than an ambassador of China, it's quite hard for her to have strong evidence to support her words. Notice that she used a lot "maybe" during this "interview". But it's not hard to see that, when she had the chance to talk in front of the American audience, she was trying to send a message how China wish an equal negotiation for this "trade-wall", just like most of the people want. As an American, this video really makes you contemplate what a strange, devious, backhanded culture we have cultivated that is totally at odds with our image of ourselves as forthright straight talking rational pragmatists (which, funnily enough, describes the Chinese so well.)
Botox. Personally, I found her inability to use her facial muscles extremely distracting. Not sure what was worse, the fact that she only repeatedly parroted talking points; or fitting the stereotype as just another botoxed, uninformed blond working on Fox. I felt bad for Liu Xin even having to put herself into that position; a grade-school mind speaking to a knowledgeable college professor.

Good point, MKH. Nathan is so much better at finding the holes in Trish's logic and making spot-on comments. I bet he would get a 6.0 if he ever took the GRE writing test on arguments. But Xin did give an explanation on this when some people in China commented that she was too "weak" during the debate. Her purpose was not to win the debate but to soothe the tension and provide more facts to the American audience.

Well, his perspective is broadly taken to cater the greater Western audience. But like deception you dont really know what is the target and the objective. In America it's all about " winning", other countries like China prefers subtlety to remain anonymous away from the public face and away from public outrage. I believe that the West is losing world dominance simply because their tactic did not evolve, Western decline is visible everywhere because the are the face of the coin playing both God and Satan.
The best example of what I mean is " Afghanistan". It was the US who for the most part operated militarily overthrowing tribal leaders, putting puppets controlled by the US. The Chinese bussiness covertly made deals with the locals to extract minerals on their land, to exploited Afghan resources. Who made the mpst gains? Lester Chester Trish is no Tucker, and they only had 15 minutes, no in-depth discussion nor debate were shown. The rationale behind the trade war is a broad and complex topic, I believe both sides would have much more points to make if a proper debate was set up.

Ms Regan also had the advantage of setting up or introducing the program, and the major advantage of being able to do an analysis after Ms. Liu is off the air. For any Chinese readers, forgive me for using a sports analogy. The phrases "away game and home game" refers to the advantage that a sports team has when playing in their own stadium or field or court.

It's not a debate. Liu also said that it's more like an interview instead of debate.
That is due to the lack of counter arguments from the Fox host. Perhaps she never intended to debate Liu or she simply had no arguments or facts to counter. If it was her usual show Trish would be passing her personal opinions and assumptions left and right as arguments, but its surprising how she didn't do that with Liu and noticed how her tonality changed from the usual aggressive type to a soft spoken and reserved one. I guess she realize this particular show with Liu has garnered many non American viewers and her usual crap won't be accepted by the rest of the world.

@David Watter 我在美国到现在也呆了不少时间了，也许很多普通老百姓不关心政治，觉得共产党也没什么，但绝对对“共产党”三个字也没什么好感，而且支持贸易战、对华敌视的人群看来，“共产党”三个字几乎等于纳粹。所以归根结底，央视之所以让刘欣进行这场对话究竟要达到什么目的，这才是关键。这次对话不是为了在美国为共产党正名，而是为了发出关于贸易战自己的声音，同时借此向整个西方社会传递出自己的观点。而且美国人与苏联共产党斗争几十年，奥巴马当年胜选演讲都提到了“我们的先辈与纳粹、共产主义斗争”，央视直播赶忙切换到演播室，同声传译也没有把“共产党”翻译出来，这个事件我至今记得。所以我觉得兄台应该好好想想美国人究竟怎么看待“共产党”三个字，需要好好重新观察一下，而且Nathan是美国人，他已经说得很清楚了。另外，要想短短十几分钟在FOX通过采访为共产党正名，这有点异想天开。刘欣越在FOX为共产党辩护，她在美国观众眼中就越不可信，所以无关话题不用扯太多。Trish知道这一点，才在谈话开始前着重强调了好几次刘欣是共产党。刘欣作为对外的媒体人，对这种招数想必很熟悉，她能反应过来并迅速反驳、指控Trish先入为主想设套，可以说是整个对话最大的闪光点。

This is a great video clearly explaining the cultural differences which are all spot on (to my knowledge).
In most Asian cultures, any educated person will not intentionally insult another person in a public setting. Being humble is basic courtesy. Protecting the "face" of your counterpart is important etiquette. Harmony is always preferred, making a friend is better than making an enemy.

Just like Nathan said, when she introduced herself, it's more in a Chinese greeting way, she's trying to be friendly and polite. However, compared to American's greeting way, it's too much, too polite to convince the audience she's nice. Instead, they might found, oh this woman was so weak that we can BULLY her. What's more, Liu's role is more a host than an ambassador of China, it's quite hard for her to have strong evidence to support her words. Notice that she used a lot "maybe" during this "interview". But it's not hard to see that, when she had the chance to talk in front of the American audience, she was trying to send a message how China wish an equal negotiation for this "trade-wall", just like most of the people want. She's sending information that we want peace instead of war. (Omg, I typed too much, but hopefully, these can give you a view of how I feel about this "debate" based on my experience to both Chinese and American culture's difference.) Botox. Personally, I found her inability to use her facial muscles extremely distracting. Not sure what was worse, the fact that she only repeatedly parroted talking points; or fitting the stereotype as just another botoxed, uninformed blond working on Fox. I felt bad for Liu Xin even having to put herself into that position; a grade-school mind speaking to a knowledgeable college professor.
She was expecting a heated discussion due to the aggressive nature of her questions and she didn't know how to react to kindness and politeness so she gave some fake awkward smiles.
