I saw his 1984 tour. Thanks for doing this. I'm a drummer fascinated by guitarists and great drummers, I always tell guitarists that Frank is one of my favorite lead players and most of them look at me dumfounded. Frank Rules.
I was lucky enough to meet Frank backstage after a show in NYC in 1984. I was afraid he would be kind of rude or not interested in some nobody trying to get an autograph, but he was actually really nice, and allowed a couple of photos to be taken, and signed some random piece of paper I had in my wallet. I've met a few rock stars over the years but meeting him is probably one of my highlights. wish I could attach the pictures.
This is the show actually, kind of cool it was filmed that night but I didn't find out until much later. Thanks, RUclips! ruclips.net/video/CbeFjEHE-XY/видео.html
I've been listening to Zappa music for over 40 years and still discovering new layers and themes every time I listen to it. The guy was a musical savant. Videos like this highlight what a unique composer/musician he was. Good job.
This is my Super Bowl of your lessons. I have loved Zappa’s music for over 30 yrs. Brilliant composer & his bands were the best of the best! Thank you 🍺’ski!🤘
The three albums that came from that tour are all amazing -- Make a Jazz Noise Here -- Broadway the Hard Way -- The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life -- all are freakin awesome
Thank you for touching on Zappa again. He is one of my favorite artists/composers and any time you decide to revisit Frank for whatever reason I will watch and like!
Thank you Dave for bringing that to us. When I first heard Frank's music 44 years ago I just could not believe my ears. Every $8 earned meant another Zappa album. It was a life-changing moment. To this day, my record collection starts with Z and then goes from A to Y. Thanks again!
Saw him live as a kid. One of the best concerts I've been to. I think it's cool Dweezil is touring and playing music also. If Dweezil & band comes around my area on tour I'll be there.
OMFG I saw FZ on that tour, „Broadway the Hard Way“. One of the first concerts I went to, in this case with my dad who‘d always been a huge Zappa fan - the two first records I can remember as a kid were Electric Ladyland and, well, Studio Tan... Thanks for the vid, mate, that was a metric crapton of fond memories 🙂.
That main melody lick lick in Sleep Dirt is so awesome at that rehearsal. It's amazing people have seen that video, but don't realize it's completely different from album version and on acoustic guitars. I remember stumbling on that video a few years back and falling in love with that live version.
Just recorded a virtual gig with 4 people in a room. One stage. 4 cameras and plenty of social distancing... man it was good to be back on stage!!. And now I'm home ... and watching one of my favourite RUclips channels. Thanks for the content brother ❤🤘🏼❤
always had an ear for Frank Zappa and as it says on Joe's Garage - 'they're pretty good musicians'.love Blue Lou Marini's sax accompaniment on Purple Lagoon from Zappa In New York.Captain Beefheart on Sam With The Showing Scalp Flat Top - particular about the point it made : )
Terrific lesson! 9:23 where 9th is added via the G string is a wicked spot to spice up blues licks... I recommend intermediate players experiment even with a straight-up Bm7 or B7 chord
Thanks a million on this, David! Frank Zappa began to influence my life in 1978, when my dad began putting vinyl Frank albums on the stereo in front of me (when I was in 5th grade)! I was hooked immediately! And I've been to at least 5 Frank Zappa concerts (with my dad) over the next decade! A brilliant pioneer!
Thanks I enjoy your channel. I saw the show that "Mr. Sting" came out, then again the next night, only this time right up front and really close to Frank. When he picked up the guitar it was amazing, he was really unique. Pretty sure it was that yellow Strat.Regarding that picking on the neck, I think he had at least one guitar with a pick up embedded in the neck. Recently saw Dweezil who is carrying the torch. My favorite period was One Size Fits All.
Im a huge Zappa fan! I remember when the MTV Halloween special would come on! I had the pleasure for auditioning for Dweezil two years ago doing Frank's vocals. It was a dream come true! For me 'The Sinister Footwear II' is my favorite instrumental. I remember I found a VHS of 200 Motels when I was a freshman music student at Eastern Kentucky University. It kept me twisted!! Great video bro!!
@@voronOsphere The first time I met Dweezil was backstage at River Bend in Cincinnati. I told him that 'Sinister' was my favorite instrumental. He said "I'll have to hear it again". The very next tour, they opened with 'Sinister Footwear II'!!
You're my new favorite, go-to guitar channel on RUclips! Too many RUclips folks fall into the having a schtick routine these days, and that's okay, much of the RUclips audience demands it, unfortunately. I think that's the younger folk that require a song and dance to keep their attention, and I get it! Thank you for just keeping it about the music and letting it speak! Your excellent instruction and amazing playing really allows for your personality to shine through the music, thank you for that!
Cool, can't wait to watch later when I've a better time, but now I wish to suggest indilging April Wine in a round. Nonetheless, I do look forward to this Zappa episode asap. Talk about eclectic music approaches.😎
Thanks for your videos, David. You're a fine guitarist and a very good teacher. I enjoy spending time with you via these videos. You always communicate knowledge, warmth and patience. Well done, brother!
Such a well explained & explored introduction into a genius’s music. I grew up in Maryland where Frank originated and coincidently ended up in Rancho Cucamonga near where he lived early on out here in Southern California. Thank you for keeping Frank’s legacy alive. I don’t think anyone could do it better than you just did. I’m sure he’s pleased from up above! Great Job!🍎
Excellent lesson as always. I read an interview with either Frank, or Vai describing what Frank called the "harmonic aroma" (I love that term!) of a vamp or tune, where Frank's blues-based style would be punctuated by those extra chord tones to kind of reinforce the particular modal or chordal feel. It's a cool concept that you really show well in this video.
Great stuff! How about 3 licks from Tommy Bolin? His best solos are usually in his outros. Here are a few to choose from Alexis (James Gang), Savannah Woman, Bustin' Out For Rosey, Gypsy Soul. People need to know about this guy!
Thank you so much for doing this. I miss seeing FZ every year, I hope more/other great musicians explore this amazing path. Please keep this up, you know what I'm saying, MOAR!!!!
Hey David, great to hear you tackling more Zappa. I would love to hear your analysis of Zombie Woof, from the Overnite Sensation album. Lots of juicy guitar work on that track. 🙏
Hmm, Frank and playing over neck, he had pickup installed in the neck. Most definitely in his Jimi Strat and also in the SG that he used in Roxy, that SG had/s extremely modified electronics.
dude I like your tone from that practice amp so much . to be an inexpensive beringer I'm so impressed with that one sound and it seems to work with about anything. I'm gonna get one if I can find it just for that preset. great lesson as always.
Frank loved Halloween and some of his best live shows IMO & where he pushed his playing even further were in New York @ the Halloween shows #MusicIsTheBest #FrankZappa
I don't know if anyone agrees, but I'd be interested in a CC Deville 3 licks video from his live solo in 1991. It's very sloppy but some cool ideas in there.
With Zappa, you could open a separate channel just for him 😃. This was really interesting, maybe you could do another Zappa riff/melody someday. Thanks!

Comment #2: Thank you David. Is a Frank Part Deux possible? Maybe from Zoot Allures - "Black Napkins" (pleeeeeze - lol). I think there's a video of him playing it - maybe not from Japan, or maybe from another city in Japan... I'll do some hunting.
Oh yeah. Just search here. There are way more Black Napkins videos than I thought. Holy shit... X many minutes, maybe 90 later I see the Zoot Allures cover on your wall - jeez, sorry lol.
Great video - never actually heard Sleep Napkins, but it's obviously a variation of the Black Napkins melody, I assume on top of the Sleep Dirt backing.
Hey David, why don't you add a looper to your rig? Like when were playing the phrase while holding down the Gdim chord? Still sounds cool though and you got your point across
Not that it helps make any more sense of it, but for my piano player I described the odd F chord as... F diminished major 6, major 7 Not that Frank is playing a diminished scale over the chord, but in an F diminished scale the only odd duck in the chord is the high E (maj7)
Just listening to some of his more direct hard rock stuff shows that he could totally have played the game and become a huge rock star, but he really didn’t care for that.
Jarlath it’s one of the cool yet somehow frustrating things about Zappa, some of the tracks (like “I come from Nowhere”) could have been so commercial yet he skews them just enough to make them unique. Bowie did the same thing, he called it “not playing to the gallery”.

His interplay with his drummer is unparalleled. Guitarists these days have a hard time understanding his phrasing and unique approach.
In 73 a frat brother was playing a new album he just got called Over-Night Sensations. That changed my life. Been listening every since.
That "This episode came from your request" image with the dog makes me chuckle every time

So many awesome guitarists and composers out there. Well, Frank was just the greatest of all.
OMG..... love this!! the man's oddness in music is what got me....Joe's Garage....

Nice video and as someone else noted, Sleep Napkins is a construction of Sleep Dirt and Black Napkins.
I saw Frank in '88 (I think) at Nassau Coliseum 7th row center. Dweezil came on stage and played a song with his dad. Amazing show.
thank you for paying homage to the most severely underrated and under appreciated guitarists. well done.
Frank's guitar solo for the instrumental "Sinister Footwear II" from Them or Us is very agressive and savage. I love his rhythm and lead work!
Thank you so much. It was one thing to love Zappa's work ... another to begin to understand why.
Zappa is masterclass level no doubt.
Thank you for touching on Zappa again. He is one of my favorite artists/composers and any time you decide to revisit Frank for whatever reason I will watch and like!

You do an exceptional job explaining the theory behind the music. Thanks.

Love your visual representations . . . I think you've captured it.
Love your Zappa breakdowns!

Thanks, Dave! Your lessons are gold. :)
Great lesson David. Particularly like the breakdown of what was going on. Not too technical but enough and done in your own inimitable style.

Lou Marini's solo on Purple Lagoon is a masterpiece !
Slip napkins is a mix of 2 Zappa songs, slip dirt and black napkins.
Another great lesson, your explanations on targeting chord tones are really helpful.
Terrific lesson! 9:23 where 9th is added via the G string is a wicked spot to spice up blues licks... I recommend intermediate players experiment even with a straight-up Bm7 or B7 chord
Love the Zappa vids. Always wondered about this chord progression, definitely one of his best
Your vibrato is always spot on man, awesome stuff

I'm slowly making my way through your videos and I'm enjoying them. Especially the Vai and now Zappa related ones. Keep 'em coming :)

He played with John Lenon and Pink Floyd. There's footage of him with Floyd, but he said he didn't remember.
Comment #1: I had No idea Carole Kaye and Lowell George played with Zappa!
Carole Kaye played on Lumpy Gravy. You can really hear her on the original instrumental version of Oh,No.
Frank nicknamed Lowell `little feet` because he had little toes that humored Frank, He said they looked like little Vienna sausages so Lowell took the name `little feet` and made a band by that name.
Saw Frank six times between 76 and 84. Nobody like him
I’d you listen to black napkins you can hear that the sleep napkins intro lick is a borrowed from the intros lick of black napkins.
