"Until we meet again Sarah" - I don't think any other Doctor has said that to their companions, its like he knew he would see her again. How genius to bring her back! RIP Elizabeth Sladen.

Andrew Lewis No, Davies was a fanboy, and he didn't do it right. The whole reason the companions get cycled out in the first place is because they're no longer young. No one wants to see someone grown old still acting like she did in her youth like she never moved on.

vanta black Actually, I'm pretty sure it was Matt Smith and Steven Moffat's first season that exploded Doctor Who's international popularity. I remember them saying it was like #1 most downloaded show on iTunes or something back when people still used iTunes.

Karl Hiramanek Perhaps the television series, but I can tell you that Dr Who is massively popular on the other side of the planet, and has been since the 70s. I spent most of the 80s as a kid up to my ears in Doctor Who books!

DDG Yes, I know that. I mean the love for the modern show. It's always had a pretty large fanbase, but now it reached a new generation of young people who didn't know Doctor Who existed (and didn't have parents or grandparents who grew up on the show).
In other words, the fans known as "New Whovians."

to me this was one of the saddest goodbyes because they didn't have a student mentor relationship, or a imaginary friend type relationship, or a will they wont/romantic relationship. It was almost like two little kids going off and having fun together and this scene is like when the sun goes down and they have to say goodbye, even though neither of them want to go home.

The way I always interpreted this scene as The Doctor making the decision HIMSELF to leave Sarah Jane behind. It's worded very carefully to show the Time Lords didn't TELL him to per se. He most likely could have brought her...but they'd just wipe her memories like they did with Jamie and Zoe. Since Sarah was even more precious to him than they had been, he'd rather leave her behind but still have her remember him.
Hence the final line "Don't you forget me".

The Master tricked the Doctor and summoned him to Galifrey to frame him for assassinating the President of Galifrey. He had a personal vendetta against the Doctor. You could say the Master made the Doctor leave Sarah behind. In the end though it would have been to dangerous for Sarah to go with the Doctor given what the Master had planned for the Doctor. Felt terrible for Tom's Doctor though. The episode is called "The Deadly Assassin ". I highly recommend it. It is a favorite on a lot of fans list and a great stand alone episode. God bless.

+MMODoubter When you watch "The Deadly Assassin" it will help fans to understand this scene more. It might make this scene, between the Doctor and Sarah, even more emotional knowing the Doctor was tricked into leaving Sarah behind even though it was for her own good.

But we didn't see later, when she well and truly realized that she'd never see him again. She met the Doctor when he was still actively working with UNIT (even though he could have left Earth in his rearview mirror long before). That meant she could go home at night and return to UNIT headquarters in the morning and find him. It wasn't until after 'Robot' that she was permanently aboard the TARDIS. (On the show. I don't know the EU.)
So she found a phone, called UNIT to arrange transportation home, and at some point it hit her: he was gone. Off the planet. No waking up to alien planets or the birth of stars or even a walk along a beach in the Cambrian. Back to reporting on tiny little human obsessions and concerns.

Martimus Prime Sarah Jane was most definitely a feminist character. You have to remember that the definition of feminism back in the early 70s (often referred to as "second-wave feminism") is far removed from the definition of feminism seen today ("third-wave feminism"). Sladen's character was created at a time where, although first-wave feminism allowed for women the right to vote, did not abolish the social expectations that men often had for women. By being strong, Sarah Jane as a character actively challenged the gender expectations of the time, refusing to be marginalised for purely being a woman. She is literally a textbook feminist of her time lol.

Aged well? That may be the understatement of all time. Still *objectively* beautiful in her 60's, not subjectively "she looks pretty good for her age."
