When I finished the quest, I turned jake into a guard. His punishment for almost becoming a raider is to protect his family with his life. Gave him the proper means to do it too

When Slag starts his little countdown, I in turn have myself a quick lunch of Yao Guai ribs, a Nuka Cherry, and take some Orange Mentats. Then, by the time he gets to 2, I'm already shooting. My philosophy in this situation is...Never mess with a pissed off, pre-war housewife, carrying a fully-auto Combat Rifle, loaded with explosive .45 rounds. Especially when matters of family are involved.
Nate has pre-war military experience and training. Nora has a mother's fury.

xL3G1TxN4T1ONx Well, I only say "housewife" because, in the holotape Nate left her, he says that she'll, quote, "have to dust off her law degree.." Meaning, she wasn't practicing. More than likely, putting the career on hold to be a stay-at-home Mom for a while. Thus making her a housewife.
They did have an infant son, so taking a few years off to take care of him is definitely likely (You can't expect Codsworth to do ALL the work :P ).

well the truth is the Minutemen used to be a lot stronger they even saved Diamond City from supermutans so it's possible he was talking about a time when the Minutemen help clear out the Commonwealth

I took on Saugus at level 11 on survival mode... god I hated that.

The personalities of these NPCs is very lifelike. In one of my playthroughs I came back to Finch farm later after saving abe's son, only to find his wife captured by the same guys. Revenge? I knew I had to save her, or I'd get an earful from her if I didn't. lol
Tall Order I killed jake and the next day his brither daniek was kidnapped by the gunners at the scrapyard, but I had already killed them so it was just one lady guarding him lol
Wait that actually can happen after you ally a settlement? The only time I've gotten one of those quests was from Oberland station.
@@unidentifiedbeing7242 Yes. I assume you didn't use Preston Garvey very often because otherwise you'd have gotten the "rescue kidnapped settler" radiant quest many times. Even though you litter your settlement with laser turrets and have your settlers equipped with laser rifled and power armor, they still manage to get robbed by level 10 raiders with pipe pistols. Smh.

I brought that boy back home, gave him a good job as a provisioner to County Crossing. Then the first attack on the farm, which was from Gunners, he up and disappears on me. Though I guess he could have gotten killed and I never found the body.

General Cupid, our scouts found a promising spot for a new settlement. I'll mark it on your map.
When I did this quest, I decided to take the poetic route. I had the Pain Train skill maxed out and had X-01 Power Armor when I faced the boss. I sprinted up the stairs and sprinted into him, sending him straight into The Forge. He didn't die right away, even got a few swipes in at me, but I shot at him a couple times and made sure that The Forge's fire was what finally killed him. Poetic justice at it's finest. If they had gravestones, I would've put on it, "He died as he lived, by the hand of The Forge."
I love how he calls lower-level players "younger" players. "Did ya think I'll ever be as strong as you Ma?" "One day, son if you make sure to to work hard and eat your buff-out"

Honestly I do the same thing with Jake. I make him a provisioner, or I send him to the castle and dress him up as a Minuteman. I figure that time in the Minutemen fighting raiders and seeing the type of evil that can happen out in the Commonwealth would mature him up.
You mean you let him chill in the Castle and watch the Minuteman's lazy ass and the General is the only one doing thing around there ?
@@LegendRaccoon Must not use any of the mods I use to make the Minutemen better. Far from useless and lazy when I can have a squad of them following me including some in power armor. Also use mods to make the Artillery have some power behind it. Also no damned way is Preston sending me to help a Settlement and I'm not bringing him along to help. Honestly I see why the Minutemen get a lot of hate but they really are a fun faction to play with the right mods.
@@maiqtheliar789 Well that's just the player changing thing in the game by using mod (which is fine btw I use mod too). But I always thought lore wise Bethesda intentionally made the Minutemen a bunch of lazy and useless so call "citizen soldier", so there isn't a clear "good and kind" faction.
@@maiqtheliar789 The Minutemen can't defend any thing on their own, always want and need someone else to help with their problem, and they are the only faction that didn't care who's running the show in commonwealth, which I took as they're either too weak to fight on their own or just don't care about anything but themself. And don't even got me started on the whole Nuka World thing, that just made the Minutemen even more pathetic and I think it's been done intentionally.

As far as where Slag is from I would say he is probably from the Pitt. Possibly raiding to get slaves for the Pitt. After all Jake does mention prisoners. Depending on if the mutations that plague the Pitt have been cured or not at this point in time the Pitt would still need slaves. Marie from the Pitt would have only been around 10 or 11 years old by the time Fallout 4 happens so the amount of time that they could have actively been looking for the the cure wouldn't have been long. The Mutations from the Pitt might also explain Slag's insanity.

Oxhorn, there is only one place those raiders mey come from. The Pitt.
With each new playthrough, I become more convinced that Slag originally came from The Pitt. I could be wrong but it explains his origins outside of the commonwealth, the brutal nature of the pit explains his obsession with strength and toughness, and it also explains his desire and ability to take over and use the Ironworks.

EJ Red i always save a crit for a killer headshot with my revolver on the leader guy, and i always try and often succeed in the speech check to make his men stand down in fear
Oh man, my first play through I screwed the Finchs in every way possible, and none of it was intentional. First, I killed Jake during the fight at the Ironworks while wildly throwing grenades, and then to make matters worse, during an invasion I blew Abigail's head off when I mistook her for a raider. Awful. And as if that wasn't bad enough, before I even noticed that I'd killed her, I looted her. (I like to loot the Invaders and equip the armor and weapons on my settlers.) OMG. Horrible! I didn't know what to do, so I just put her body on her bed.
I came back later to check on the farm, and Abraham and Daniel were just standing there looking at her. I felt so rotten. Probably the worst I've ever felt about a gaming experience. Empathy can be a real bitch.
I waited for night to fall, then dragged her body out of the cabin and threw her in the river while her family was sleeping.
I avoided Finch's Farm for quite a while after that, but finally went back when they were invaded again. After we kicked the snot out of the Forged, Abraham and Daniel were so effusive in their thanks. They were saying how terrible their lives would have been if not for me. If they only knew!!!
On the one hand, I was pleased that they didn't hold it against me, OR at least not KNOW that I killed half the family, but on the other hand, I still feel pretty badly about how the whole thing went down.
So, um, yeah. I always go out of my way to make sure the Finch family gets a happy ending now. Except my latest character went straight from the vault to Nuka World for a raider play through. I gotta figure out a way to let the Finch familyhave their peace. Maybe I can just avoid them altogether?

I actually came across this quest by complete accident while doing the Yangtze quest. I walked in, got super confused as to what Slag and Jake were doing, and then got even more confused when Jake started talking to me as if I'd already started a quest for him or something.

am i the only person who questions why there's no special music for fallout, seeing as there a 110-120 year gap between the music we hear and the bombs falling, did only Vinyl survive the bombs, an if so why are there still some perfectly fine pre-war holotapes around.. i want something different to listen to damn it
but it's not tho, all the music is from the 30s-60s, at the point of divergence, so once the split the timeline, they just STOPPED making music... heck Elvis existed in their word and yet there is no Elvis music in any of the games

The reason for the seemingly high tech developments in a seemingly low tech world is due to the fact that the transistor was never invented. The transistor is the successor to Fallout's technology, vacuum tubes. The transistor allowed the microchip to be invented. Fallout's technology doesn't run on transistor technology, but instead use vacuum tubes. That's why they have nuclear powered robots but black and white large vacuum tube powered TVs.
I actually have a theory about the Forged I would like to run past you all. Since Slag comes from outside the Commonwealth, set up shop in the old Iron works, and actually seems to know something about how to process metal, it makes me think he is a Raider from The Pitt. All the signs are there. I am guessing he moved from The Pitt to the capital Wasteland after the Vault Dweller finished with the Pitt. He heard about the Commonwealth and thought it would be a good place to start his own Raider Clan. It would even explain his Power armor, since the Brotherhood of Steel had left a few suit behind in the Pitt after the Scourge.

Okay, I made a post on your recent video about this; however, I wanted to say thank you again. I cleared the Forge, saved Jake, didn't save the settler, and completely missed the Dampening Coil, bobblehead, and book.
Also, I was using a Super Sledge when fighting Slag, and when I killed him in VATS I literally knocked him out of his Armor. He was laying on the ground and his armor was standing there marked as owned, but accessible. I have no Mods, and couldn't find anything about this in a brief search.
Preston was my companion, and Slags armor showed as owned so I was planning to return anyway.
I'll pick those missed items up when I do. Thank you for the videos, and the lore.
FYI: I went back to get the armor. It still showed owned. I took the armor, went to red rocket where I store my armors for now, and even after leaving it still shows owned. So I knocked him out of his armor, he's dead, but every time I use his armor I'm stealing.
I completely forgot I did this and kept asking myself, "Why can't I removed this item from my inventory?" This video reminded me why.

my level was like 8 so it was challenging as hell. i couldnt get passed the front gate. however, now im lever 19, have better weapons, armor, and Dance as my companion, the Forge is good as mine on monday.
I had a tremendous amount of fun building on the Finch Farm, because the build area is tall enough to reach the overpass. I put a town on the overpass with an observation deck at the highest point providing some of the best views in the game. Pretty well-defended piece of real estate considering its proximity to both Raiders and Gunners.

Reg. your question, Oxhorn:
in my first play through I visited Saugus Ironworks much to early.
I was burned to a crisp mostly even before reaching the entrance doors.
And , finally, in the end fight against , ehm, you- know-who, I ran around like a rabbit in panic at the bottom of that room, desperately trying to hide somewhere. Only with the help of enormous amounts of Jet, Psycho and other good stuff I made it, barely. It was terribly hard.
The second time I went in a level 50 character and was done early enough for some sun bathing at the Finch Farm afterwards.
Oxhorn, do a video on a theory of what happened to all of the sea life, like the dolphins and stuff please. It would be a cool video to watch :)

I didn't even find this place because of the quest, I just stumbled across it at level 14 while I was looking around doing one of the Minutemen settlement quests.
I kept getting killed by the Forged and their Flamers, till one time I ran to the Pool that Wiseman ran and they followed me. Luckily one of the trade caravans was there too and the combined firepower of me, the Caravan boss and the 2 guards killed the Outer guards. I swiped the Cage armor and their weapons and made it in. Got killed a few times INSIDE too but me and Cogsworth slaughtered our way all through to Slagg and Jakes' initiation.
Headache inducing...and I loved it when I won.
Just imagine the tombstone. "Died without permission so we burned and killed him"

Matt I'd say the pitt is far more likely considdering the nuka world raiders are no stronger than the average commonwealth raiders who slag considder weak.
Matt i think the pitt or that gang of raiders from fallout 2 (cant remember name) it fits more with them because of the metal fire theme although by the way he acts after watching this a 2nd time he could be a fiend from fallout NV
Hope you cover the Corvega assembly plant soon. I have a feeling it will be around the time you do the Minutemen video since Corvega is featured in that quest-line.

By the time I finished playing my first Fallout 3 play-through, two in-game years passed, and right now about 3 years of in game years of Fallout 4 have passed.

I say he comes from the Pitt - Pittsburgh from that Fallout 3 DLC (which was the coolest in my opinion!).
It's a perfect match. It was an incredibly cruel and ruthless place and it was all about metal, industry and flames.

Fallout 4 in a nutshell
I know I am late but I wanted to mention on the upper level with the makeshift raider camp there are a couple of little scenes set up on the rafters. One is a skeleton with a fumigus blowtorch which is nice because it has 3 oil. I shot the blowtorch and it fell onto a container below it so I could retrieve it that way because I am awful navigating the steel beams :). There is also an alien doll with welders goggles off to the right side of the first wooden ramp as you are approaching the area with the radio on the top level. Both were pretty fun :). I completely missed the skeleton with the day tripper. These are always so much fun to watch!! 👍

Me. I was just looking around when I found the Ironworks. Never saw the farm till Jake told me about them.
I went through this place once on my first play through. Now I always have a jet pack by the time I get there and go through the roof directly to the end

I didn't get this quest at the farm but ran across the map and found Saagus when I went in there I got a Searing Shishekebab without knowing how much history it had.
I installed a zombie mod that turns feral ghouls and other creatures into TWD type zombies. I saved the kid and met him by the overpass, but then suddenly I failed the mission.
A bunch of ghouls stormed the settlement and killed everyone.

One of the things I love most about your videos is that it shows how thoughtful you are with the characters. Turning Jake into a provisioner, giving him time to mature (and probably some much needed separation from his family), then after some time, returning him home shows a large amount of kindness and concern. You're a good settlement leader to be so invested in the lives of those in your 'care'.

The Forged are easily my favorite raider faction in the base game; they actually stand out from the other non-Nuka World gangs, both visually and in how they go about the business of their own internal hazing and rituals.
Wish the other main gangs (Bossco, Red, Tower Tom, ect.) had their own "thing" to distinguish themselves from the common wandering raiders.

my theory is that slag was one of the riders that worked for ashur, but he didn't like the supervisor role and just went rogue, that's why he's handy enough to have the forge going

I made Jake a provisioner as well. It just made sense to me in terms of role-playing, as just because he was allowed to come back home doesn't mean that the relationship with his father would be repaired. The space of Jake out on the road would do those two well.
The Ironworks was one of the last places I’d gone to after completing the game, I’d previously gotten the quest but saw it as ‘just another misc quest’ so when I finally got there I was level 92 and walked in with X-01 MkVI and an explosive combat shotgun with gage at my side.
I love this channel I already built a lot of settlements (meaning a water pump) but after watching some of your vids I started a new play through and am building at all the settlements currently working on the slog.
It was wild discovering after years having this game that they actually DID include at least one landmark from the town where I grew up, not to mention the RIVER. But it’s also interesting hearing people actually talk about it and try to say Saugus lol
An aside- this landmark does exist! It’s just not the original location or look. The old one is very much a museum site. The modern equivalent is like this, a closed off factory by the river.

Slag might be from the Pitt. Remember the raiders there were also using the place as a steel manufacturing powerhouse. Which could explain Slag’s name, the ruthlessness of his recruitment, and the fact that him and his men are holed up in an old steel processing facility.

Daniel Finch is one of the named settlers that has a separate cap account, hence if you make him a trader by assigning it to a stall he will have his own inventory, including caps. The other two are Connie Abernathy and June Warwick at the eponymous farms. Most settlers that can be assigned to stalls do not have their own inventory, meaning when you drain the caps from one, it will also drain the caps from every other settler assigned to a similar stall type. Named recruitable settlers can also have the same issue: Vault-Tec Representative and Tina deLuca most preeminently.
Not sure if you mentioned this in the video. If you CLEARED Libertalia and Corvega before going to Saugus Ironworks, Slag has journal entries in his Terminal talking about those location. In the Libertalia entry, Slag comments on wanting to meet the killer's face. In the Corvega entry, he comments that Jared may have been too high to enjoy the fight.

You missed the bit on the roof, with the execution death stairs running up to the chimney stack. I found that bit most interesting on my playthrough of Saugus. 👍
The other thing that was missed was the two pre-war skeletons under the first stairway, smoking.
