I have had only Dobermans for 55 years. Breeding, showing, then adopting (older Doberladies). Training is everything with Dobermans, and can even be successful with a senior dog. I have been complemented on the behavior of my ladies, even when they were abandoned due to bad habits/abuse. Training is a constant 24/7 job no matter what age. (Always stop and look both directions at the curb, Never cross in front of cars, moving or stopped). They are smart and know what they can get away with. I lost my last lady recently and will never get another Doberman. I no longer have the strength needed to properly care for a Doberman, even a senior. Watching your videos of Arlo brings back wonderful memories which I will cherish.
@@DobermanPlanet I thought so I did not want to assume. I watch all your content I am sure you probably mentioned it before. I will be getting my first doberman in a few months.
He's checking to make sure he's in for the night. My pup and Arlo are about the same age. I made the mistake checking on the bark and if I open the cage after he barks it takes him a while to wind down. Thanks for everything you do
Hey I just wanted to say that I really appreciate this channel. I’ve just got another week left before I get my first doberman so I’ve been binging and studying all your videos and they’re a tremendous help. Keep up the work man
So glad you found somethings useful in my videos! Thanks so much for taking a minute to leave this comment, really made my day. Good luck, you'll do great!
Doberman Planet I actually got my puppy today and it’s going well. Definitely a little overwhelming but I can’t express how excited I am about the process
Arlo is gorgeous. In addition to the usual commands, I taught my Doberman back up, left paw, right paw, and stand (from a sitting or down position). Leave it (something on the ground) or drop it (something already in his mouth), have saved him from eating things he shouldn't.
My dark blue girl is part European and part American (North & South). She just turned 8 months. She is my 4th Dobie, and I have always done my own training. I grew up in a small town and was allowed to watch the police dogs train, through a fence. I got Bella at 5 months from wonderful man, who loved her very much, but did no training with her. Most things she has picked up quickly, but things like jumping, pulling, person space have been soooooo much work. She can be stubborn, and is very strong. She has learned look at me, back up, bang (you're dead), wait, leave it, down, platz (for lay down). Your videos have been a great help with her, thank you. Jumping has gotten much better, still jerking and running on leash. Oh, she is learning the names of all of her toys, great mental exercise, and fun for both of us.
Arlo is so beautiful! You can see his personality really taking shape. Our little guy Chalupa just turned 11 weeks old and is already such a lovely family member, we are glad we got a Doberman. He’s so dang smart and just wants to be loved.
Alro is coming along amazing! Love to see how well he is doing with kids! My Dobie Darko was amazing with kids! I have 2 nieces who were just young when Darko was around and he was so gentle with them
Your videos are truly the best that I've ever seen, regardless of the breed of dog! Your training is gentle and respectful, yet firm enough to course correct behaviors, but not break the wonderful natural spirit of a Doberman. My boy "Zeke" (RIP) literally learned to sit within 20 minutes, at the same time his first really serious training I gave him was "NO bite faces" at all. It took about 4-fifteen minute sessions for him to really get it, as we have extended family kids around often. We also had a special "gloves game" Zeke that and I played, and he knew if I put on some heavy leather gloves it was "Battle time" and he could bite "firmly" . IMO it is a dogs nature and need to bite something, but they need to know the rules of society. A couple of time he did get carried away and bite rather hard, but he immediately backed right off at my wincing. He was always sweet with kids and "Nannied" them as if they were his. Pardon my rambling, I just really miss my boy!
It is like the everything's okay bark. He will want to check the house at night and probably through the night, especially the kids. After the crate training is done. Very happy he has such a great home.

I don’t have a Dobermann yet, but It amazes me how smart dogs can be. My dog recently started to go further towards the green sides of the walkways as soon as she notices some other people that want to go past us. She is fairly gentle with that and I used to Interpret that as bathroom time. A few times after that, one where she couldn’t go to the green side, she started nudging me. Only then I noticed that she was just trying to move me out of the way of the bicyclists. I am slightly hearing impaired so it sometimes happens that I overhear some noises. It seems that my dog noticed it and decided to help me. We never taught that.
What a good boy!! My partner and I are getting a Doberman in August! It’s my first pup ever and our first Doberman. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and being a resource- I have a lot more confidence bringing our girl home thanks to you!
Violet is our now 11-1/2 week old Doberman puppy and she’s doing awesome! We’ve learned a ton from your videos, please keep sharing. She is already making it through the night in her crate with no yelping! Sit, shake, lay down, and wait, she is already responding to these commands and has only had one accident in the house. So smart! Thanks for sharing your content, love the channel!
Thanks for documenting Arlo’s growth! I am expecting to get my first Doberman in 8 weeks! He was just born! I have been doing A TON of researching and your videos have been so helpful!
I love Dobes - they (and Corgies) are my favorite breed. We had a German-bred male Dobe when I was a kid (natural ears) - very intelligent. He went everywhere with me and stayed at my side as we walked. When I was playing at a friend’s house, he would sit in the yard a good distance from where we played, but would always have me in sight. He was a great dog and I often think of him almost 60 years later! 😊
My Doberman does it once in a great while. I have noticed it happens when she isn’t really ready to go to sleep. Thank you for your video’s. We have learned so much from them. Keep up the great job.
My dobie is 4 almost 5 months its nice to see Arlo is close in age and has been very help. I love growth transformation and the check in videos! Thank you for making them!❤
Aww, he's just saying goodnight to you🥰🥰 Say it back!! When I was crate training my dog (and even now, without a crate, just his bed) I give my dog a treat for going in the crate/on his bed for bed time. I find that it reinforces that it's a good place to be.
Your doberman puppy looks great! I see that others have suggested that the single yelp is to say goodnight. It could also be that he is telling you to go to bed. My doberman was fine in the car until we lost our older lab/shep mix. Once he had to ride alone in the back seat he became nervous and I was concerned that it would advance to car sickness. I solved the problem by stacking several dog beds on the back seat. Once he could lay down and look out the window, the problem was solved. Thanks for your videos. My Doberman was the dog of my lifetime and I really miss him. He died suddenly from Cardiomyopathy at about 8 years old.
Love watching your video's especially now that we had just put down our 14 year old red dobe. Keep up the good work you and Arlo are doing just great together. As he gets older he will be very gentle with your children and will start protecting them as if they are his own.
He's doing so good! One command that I taught my girl that helped quite a bit with napping children - whisper. It worked with mailmen, folks coming to the door and with anything when kids were snoozing.
Awesome video...so happy to see Arlo grow up and being such a sweetheart.. only a doberman owner can understand the beautiful golden heart behind that robust body of a doberman...he is precious.. m
My boy Tony is about the same age as Arlo, he is a December litter as well. He is such a big boy now, I am amazed at how quickly he has grown! I have always crate trained, but have failed to do so with Tony. He came to me already sleeping in a dog bed, so continued on. He sleeps fine all night on his bed, but I am starting the crate training so that I may leave him at home for short times. Arlo is a keeper, for sure!
How did this happen, Arlo was just 8 weeks old !! Arlo is his own little man, just doing fantastically. He is a great dog (so intelligent), and he could simply not be in a better home. He is such a good boy; if anyone has any issues though with their pups/dogs-chewing on the bedding/pads in a crate- do not despair! Kuranda makes a fit-to-crate elevated dog bed (the slimline). Unfortunately, my boy wasn't ok with bedding inside the crate, like Arlo. I have started taking a few walks alone (hate it lol)...but to get the boy more used to me being out, once we get semi-back to normalcy-to curb the separation anxiety. Great update John!
When do swimming lessons start for him? Already kinda late. And is that a old school diving board I see? Dive/fetch commands are so fun. I have 4 weeks more to wait for my red EuroDobe to be ready.
Sounds like Arlo is either saying good night OR he's showing he's not thrilled with going to bed yet, but he will, once he let's that be known. He's handsome
SOOOO glad i found your video and instruction. Just lost my precious 13 year old rescue chocolate dobie (4 weeks ago) and am "adjusting" to seeking to 'find' another dobie love. Love your channel. Our male black and tan dobie is 81 lbs and he turns 6 mos old January 5th, 2021. He is a very big boy. We got him from a breeder in McDonough, GA. He is not overweight at all. He is tall though and loves to play with our three girls. He is a beautiful, sweet and very intelligent. He learned how to do the sit command at 3 mos old! I think he blows the growth statistics out of the water. His daddy is 121 lbs. He has our routine down pat. He is crate trained and goes in there like a dream every day/night. Sometimes he will just go in there because it is like a den to him. I would love to share a picture or two with you but don't know how to do it.
You’re so nice haha “interesting freeway trip” My dobie had awful anxiety in the car for many trips and it’s so stressful but at 3months he’s finally getting a hang of it 😅 it helped that my Boxer came along trips and she was very chill and happy so I think he calmed down
Arlo is so cute it makes me emotional, I love watching him as it reminds me of when my dobie was a pup, mine will be 6 years old this year, the best dogs with the best personalities ❤️
He’s just saying goodnight. Great videos. picked up my Doberman in May and Boy is he smart. He used the doggy door by himself rather quickly and he could barely get thru it because of how high it’s is. It took my Boston another week to figure it out that he could go through it without our help.
Wow! Crazy how fast they grow!!! Again, great job John. The bedtime bark thing... he’s just voicing his opinion. He’s saying “bedtime, really dad, you serious?” Both of mine are talkers. I love it!
My dog does the same thing. I think it is a good night bark. Doberman's are so smart, he is just being a good boy and saying "Good night Dad". They all have their own funny little quirks. My doberman is almost 5 now. Looking into adding another one to the mix.
He's a beautiful dobie! So well mannered, attentive and looks like he loves your older child very much. Maybe best buddies soon. Thank you for sharing his progress from 8 weeks until now.
He is going to be a great example of an adult Doberman. They are so misunderstood. Yes, my Doberman always barked to let us know that he was ok and that he was ready to go to sleep. A kind of goodnight bark. Later, as he got older we gave him the choice of being crated or choosing where he wanted to sleep. He chose to sleep in the hallway between bedrooms. I put a blanket down for him on top of a plush pad. I covered him each night and that's where he slept. We never stepped on him because if one of us put our feet on the floor, he was right there to accompany us to the kitchen or the bathroom. As we did this, he stopped barking at night. Then we only used the crate when young children he didn't know, came to visit. Not so much for their protection but for his, I might add! He was a wonderful boy! He also woke us both up right before the alarms went off. He did this on his own. Guess he was just happy to see us in the morning.
What a beautiful dog!! I love dobermanns, I appreciate their loving and fun personality, smartness and striking look. Can't wait to get my own puppy someday. Arlo seems to be very nice mannered for a dog his age, I especially liked his gentle way of playing with kids.
We have two Dobermans and that Yelp at night we feel is him and her saying we don't want to sleep in this crate anymore we want to be able to patrol the house and protect you. When we let them out, they now do a lap around the house and then come back to the master bedroom where they are with both my wife and I
Loving Arlo's progress! Thank you for sharing all the information and making it so engaging... after watching your videos, I find myself more at ease when thinking about getting a Doberman... they truly are amazing animals!! Thank you!
I have had multiple dobermans that I have raised both male and female and that bark thing seems to be a case of the dog needing to say good night and it has been a consistent thing for dogs who spend a lot of time with their owners.
I have had only Dobermans for 55 years. Breeding, showing, then adopting (older Doberladies). Training is everything with Dobermans, and can even be successful with a senior dog.
When arlo approaches the dogs at the dog park thats like me approaching a wasp, i love all animals
What a beautiful dog!! I love dobermanns, I appreciate their loving and fun personality, smartness and striking look. Can't wait to get my own puppy someday. Arlo seems to be very nice mannered for a dog his age, I especially liked his gentle way of playing with kids.
I’m considering getting a Doberman and these videos are so helpful! Thank you sooo much🤓
Extraordinary!
We have two Dobermans and that Yelp at night we feel is him and her saying we don't want to sleep in this crate anymore we want to be able to patrol the house and protect you. When we let them out, they now do a lap around the house and then come back to the master bedroom where they are with both my wife and I
Hmm interesting! Thank you! We'll be transferring him out of the crate into a normal dog bed soon. We'll see if that solves it!
The yelp is him saying goodnight :)😂
He is so handsome!
Such a magnificent dog, great job
Loving Arlo's progress! Thank you for sharing all the information and making it so engaging... after watching your videos, I find myself more at ease when thinking about getting a Doberman... they truly are amazing animals!! Thank you!
Great update! Arlo looking good!
Loving the Arlo updates! Keep 'em coming!
He so beautiful ! Love seeing the updates
So damn cute that he does one loud bark
Superb keep making videos as I liked your doberman, I am also having doberman which is 6 months old
I think the one loud bark he makes before he go to sleep is him saying goodnight
I have had multiple dobermans that I have raised both male and female and that bark thing seems to be a case of the dog needing to say good night and it has been a consistent thing for dogs who spend a lot of time with their owners.
