The programme of Midgardsblot includes tours of the area, battle reenactments, documentary screenings, lectures and panel discussions, as well as a Viking village, a Viking market and a games arena for archery, axe-throwing, and other activities. Blót and blōt or geblōt are terms for "blood sacrifice" in Norse paganism and Anglo-Saxon paganism respectively. A comparanda can also be reconstructed for wider Germanic paganism. A blót could be dedicated to any of the Germanic gods, the spirits of the land, and to ancestors. The sacrifice involved aspects of a sacramental meal or feast.

Looks awsome! Great to see more and more people looking to the old ways. It's like a modern-day Renaissance! Reawaking of the pagans!

Luckily I'm from Bergen, so its just a couple of hours with train: I was there last summer in 2022. Hands down the best festival experience I've ever had, it was so wholesome, - full of absolutely lovely people. One could buy authentic replicas of viking age jewelries and outfits, bought my first taglharpe there aswell. I even slept under the oak trees at the burial mounds because my tent-neighbors started fucking and the guy went full autist and repeated "wow" for every thrust. I also managed to literally fk both my legs up while i was there. Wouldnt change a thing. And ofc,- Wardruna, Eivør & Heilung absolutely crushed it. Coming back in 2024.

Man for years I have been wishing and thinking about going to this, but it is expensive when you live in South-eastern Europe and have to pay Norwegian prices. Still, awesome festival and awesome line-up of bands.

You could go as a volunteer.
You get a free whole festival pass, free camping and fed while on shift. You only need to do two eight hour shifts and you can choose which days so you can make sure not to miss your favourite bands.
The volunteers camp is very spacious and right next to the arenas where the bands play so it's really convenient and easy to see nearly everything.
Plus, the people who volunteer are a lovely bunch of people from all over the world and you'll make lot's of new friends to hang with. There's even a volunteer and crew after-party which is legendary!
All you would need to pay for is your flights,(I would recommend buying any booze from duty free at the airport, Norway is expensive!). Other than that you will need to buy food for your non working days. I've done it twice as a broke Brit. It's doable. There's a supermarket a short walk away. You might live mostly on bread and cheese for a few days but it's doable!.
Look on the official Midgardsblot website, there's a section for volunteering. The form to apply come out in the spring around March/April and obviously it's easier to get cheap flights sorted the earlier you book.
Hope this helps. See you next year?

I am extremely interested in the authentic music traditions of the Scandinavian Iron age. In popular culture it’s sometimes portrayed as rather primitive or crude. Or they mix up growling in battle, shamanic chanting and singing of skaldic verses. We don’t have many sources but some archaeology and iconography, which display a plethora of different instruments. We have several tangential sources from the continent too. But looking at the language, the poetry, the spiritual concepts, the craftsmanship, architecture and technology of this culture, it’s seems very likely that their ”art” music would have been exquisite, refined and elaborate. That said, of course they would have loved Metal, I am certain.

This doesn’t really pertain to the video but I’ve been mulling over this quote from Snorri Sturluson and I was wondering what you guys thought of it. It’s part of his introduction.
“ I wrote this book so that young students of poetry could learn to decipher that which has been composed in subtle manner.”
Does anyone think this is a reference to him having to change things because of the church?

    • @edelhaug
