Owning 10 Martins - and having taken countless CFM factory tours - IMO, it's the combination of the finest tonewoods, impeccable techniques & craftsmanship that make the difference. I think, a best-kept secret is, the compound curvature of the back; which provides an "energy" always looking to be released - and plucking strings does that. Brilliant!

I have a Martin OM-21, essentially fresh from the factory. I picked it up in a guitar shop down the street from the Nazareth factory after touring it. It's the one object that I own that I am most proud of, I think more so than my car. I don't care how bad things get, I will never sell it. And if I have kids, they better not either after I croak. A nice Martin guitar is a heirloom, and if you treat it well it will outlive you many times over. And the best part about them is as they age, they only sound better, become more desirable, and it becomes kind of a piece of you. Looking forward to a long life with a beautiful piece of craftmanship straight from C.F. Martin...or one of them at least.

I use L.R. Bags pickups in two of them. I am far from wealthy... where there’s a will, there is a way (to own one). the history, the attention to detail, the enduring relevance... no guitar maker comes close to martin. acoustic or electric. the reputation speaks for itself... they don't even need to advertise their product. from civil war soldiers sitting around their fires to the likes of jimmy page, eric clapton, and bob dylan... martin is still king.

Nice, after testing many kinds and brands, I can suspect that the secret of the acoustic sound is usually in the bracing more than other details.

You don't have any replies (yet) and only 2 likes but you should have 100s. I've watched Martin craftsmen & women and Gibson craftsmen & women build guitars. There are also lots of videos available. At the Martin factory I actually watched a guy thump a brace he was carving. I asked what he was doing. He said he was "Tuning it." How many manufacturers even know what that means? Most go simply by measurements. For special guitars, Martin goes only by sound and by feel. That's impeccable craftsmanship. When you said it's the bracing, you hit the nail on the head!

    • @JoMaMaz

"I can't tell you what the secret formula is ... maybe you need to have been doing it for 186 years." LOL You said it, Chris. I've visited the Martin factory. I can tell you the secret. There are people there who are 3rd generation craftsmen. Chris is a direct descendant of the founder. You can't program that kind of knowledge into machine and you can't teach someone how do each and every step the way Martin does it. Visit the factory. Watch them check the tone of the braces they install. Then you'll know. In my humble opinion, Chris Martin is a genius.

Yesterday I was at guitar center and I took the time to really listen and feel the difference to a Nazareth Martin from a Mexican one. The Mexican ones are good really good I like them a lot you can tell they are held to a very similair standard but the sound of the Nazareth ones the fit and finish the consistency in set up even the smell there’s nothing like an American made Martin like I said Mexican ones are great they come super close but for me I’d rather wait and pay the extra money even just to get a 00015 as simple as they are they were beautiful

Martins guitars always sound good to me. As for Taylor they sound tinny and dead to me, with zero personality, so that is a waste of money, for nothing in return. But I have an Epiphone dreadnought that I paid only 90.00 for almost new, and it sounds phenomenal. It's deep and delicate and the best deal I've ever had. That is my price range. It would be nice to have a Martin, but I doubt I will ever see one.

To answer your question since nobody is,,,,,. No it's not a D-42, and it's definitely not a D-18. It is a Standard Martin for sure. By the tuners you can tell that they are the open back grover butter bean style. By the binding you can tell that it is most likely a D-28 or HD-28. It could possibly be a D-35. It looks almost exactly like my Reimagined Martin D-28 Standard. MSRP is around $3599.00 and if you shop around you can get a good deal on one. I paid $2000.00 last March at Melody Music in Bloomington Indiana for a brand new one. They were asking $2800.00 for it. I bought it through Reverb and got it on payments through Affirm.

You can buy a Martin Dreadnought Junior for under $1,000 and even with the laid up laminated neck (ugly as a dropped pie), it still has that Martin sound. I know: I've played them myself. The difference was that at the time I chose a Taylor 310 because I couldn't afford to jump the next step and buy a Martin D-28. I don't regret my choice but I do regret that arthritis means I can't play anymore.
