- It's time to learn powerful piano from the song "Mad World." "Mad World" is a 1982 song by British band Tears for Fears. Written by Roland Orzabal and sung by bassist Curt Smith, it rose to number three on the UK Singles Chart in November 1982.
Over the years, it has been covered by various artists, including a 2001 version recorded by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules for the soundtrack of the film Donnie Darko which this lesson takes its version from. The song was influenced by the theories of Arthur Janov, author of "The Primal Scream"
Jules said that he believed the song was easy for people to relate to: "I think it's a really beautiful example of a person struggling with the fact that life is mad. I honestly think it's one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and the way it's stripped down now just pins people." He went on to say, "Every so often a song with just vocals, piano, and cello creeps up on you and says something about who you are, where you're going which stops you in your tracks." Your teacher Lisa Witt is here to walk you through the song step-by-step, so let's dive right into the madness.

New sub. David Bennett sent me here.
Thank you.
I've been playing for two years and this was the first song I learned that wasn't part of a method book. I still play it every day as part of my warm-up. Fellow beginners, if I can play this you can get this...go slow, good luck, and have fun.
Thanks for the encouragement!
Same here, the only song I truly know how to play on the piano. It sounds hard, but it ain't.
Wow, I've never seen such a happy and positive teacher! I (kind of) learned this song years ago but forgot about it. Ended up searching for some lessons and enjoyed watching this and learning the song again.
I learned this song years ago (on the fly 😂) at the request of my friend Thomas. That night, I think I played it about 20 times haha. He passed away about 15 years ago and I think about him every time I play this song ❤
Thanks for sharing, it remind me of my little cousin!
Tears For Fears was my absolute favorite 80s band! Used to listen to this song everyday on cassette during my hour long commute to college. So psyched to dig in! Thanks for this tutorial and I’m so grateful to be a Pianote member!
I listened to the Tears version several times this weekend!
Brilliant lesson. Thanks so much!
I’m a self taught piano learner for 3 months. I was thinking this song is little bit hard for me. But I saw this tutorial and I learned all of the parts only in 2 days. I was shocked. This was a big achievements for me. Thanks for your help Lisa. I owe you too much for all your contents! 🎉
i was too surprised of how easy was to learn this song. Learned in 3 days btw( self taught for 1.5 month)
I almost got this song on the piano accordion.
Thanks Lisa for making this tutorial. I don't know about older folks but for me this song is nostalgic thanks to Gears of War, especially the third game where is played after a tragic sacrifice of a main character.
Back in time when I used to play it with my cousin and life was simpler.
The part after the intro is tricky to get the timing right, but I'm almost there.
Lisa's such an awesome teacher!! Keep up the great work!!
Thanks for being here :)
I absolutely love how you explain things and slow. Thank you
Thank you Lisa for everything you teach. Currently on my 30 day piano journey and even went piano shopping today. Chose the Roland FP10.
Best tutorial & sheet music I’ve ever found for this song! Thank you 🙏! You made it easy enough to accomplish in one day for us slightly more seasoned players.
Hello ! I've bought a piano a month ago on my 30th birthday. I've always wanted to play and i dont know why i didnt start sooner.
I really love it and I am really thankfull for your videos and tips. I LOVE YOU
It's not just in the trailer for Gears of War, it's also the song that plays in the scene where Dom sacrifices himself to save everyone. One of the saddest scenes in videogame history and this is the *perfect* music to accompany it.
Spoiler alert lol. Like 10+ years late though 😂🤣🤣🤣
i gotta play it again!
She's so happy and excited. I'm not even hear to learn about how to play the song but kinda makes me want to.
This is a great tune for teaching late beginner/intermediate players how to get a feel for some syncopation. The left hand follows the time signature almost perfectly and the right hand is playing between the beats often. It's a little tricky for the brain at first if you're new but it feels really good to play once you get it, and it's just one of those melancholy but very beautiful songs.
Clearly explained. Thank you for your enthusiastic and thoughtful post. Lovely lady.
Thank you Lisa
Such a beautiful haunting song
You make learning this so easy. Thank you! ❤️
I love this song. I need to learn ASAP! Thanks for great tutorial ! ❤️
Thank you... I love this piece Soo much 😊
You’re the best Lisa! Thanks for another great tutorial 💜
One of my favourite piano version of a song ever! I personally find much easier to play the Bb chord inverted (F - Bb - D), this way the bass note doesn't change when you move from Fm, plus the hands don't meddle with each other. One might prefer a more dynamic bass line though.
I have to say this… not crediting Tears for Fears here is almost a crime! Like not naming Pink Floyd with Wish You Were Here. Love your videos and inspiration though ❤
Lol right
I've learned more from teachers like Miss Lisa then I ever did back in college within the past three-and-a-half was four years now I learned so much more from teachers like her teacher should have been teaching us how to used chord progressions instead of just teaching us music theory Miss Lisa if you're seeing this I want to say thank you for all your tutorials and lessons it's because of teachers like you I'm getting ready to go play out! From every piece of my heart God bless you Miss Lisa!
Thanks so much!!! Very glad to help
I absolutely love your tutorials and you have the voice of an angel
😇😇😇
Outstanding 👏👌
you are so positive, you have so much energy, i wish i know you and chat and drink a beer and play piano with you. i love your mood. thank you for your lessons
I love Lisa’s tutorials. ❤
Merci beaucoup for this. I'll look it up on my Pianonote membership.
Great tutorial!!
Excellent Lisa, thanks for your help. Tears for Fears were brilliant!!
Nice tutorial! One comment regarding your website page for this tutorial: you write: "“Mad World” is written in F minor. The relative major key of F minor is A-flat major, so the song has three flats (B♭, E♭, A♭)."
This is wrong, if it was in F minor, if would have four flats. The song is actually C dorian. You might want to correct that.
Thanks and keep up with the great content!
Thank you, Ms. Liza, thank you for sharing your talents with us. God bless you more and your family 👪 🙏 ❤️ 💕 you are an awesome teacher 🥰🥰🥰 greetings from Syracuse New York 🥲🌹🌹🌹
Great work
Wish we had a guitar teacher like you aswell:)
Genial gracias
Can you leave the link for the sheet music for this compilation?
Awesome
loved learning this song! it feels so nice to play. would love a lesson on how to play "Cool Breeze" by The Jeremy Spencer Band.
My dad was so impressed on his birthday as mad world is his favorite song
I love this song! ❤️❤️❤️ I actually learned to play it last year and I loaded it on my channel. It's a bit different, but lovely anyway. At least to me 😁😅
This is amazing, could you maybe teach us "the rose and the thorn" by Johannes bornlöf?, It's a beautiful piece that I'm trying to learn but can't find any tutorials
I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't ear your voice on this one!
I was hoping Lisa was going to sing for us too!
@@PianoteOfficial Tell her next time it's half the reason I watch your videos! 😅
Is there a general rule about holding and releasing the sustain pedal (in this or any song)? Thanks for the great tutorial!
I know I'm way late but if you still have that question:
The usual rule is to lift the pedal between changing chords (usually your left hand will dictate this). Sometime you need to lift the pedal when changing bas notes with your left hand.
💜💜💜
Hi, I am a Pianote member too. Do you have the link for the Tutorial w/ the Practice Feature too? Any sheet music?
Sounds amazing
Could you please do a tutorial on a song called Good (can't be anything else) by Cody Carnes
This my go to "channel" for learning anything piano. I just got one a few months ago and have learned literally everything i know to this point from Miss Lisa and friends here. Only thing i can't figure out is how to read the notes that don't show the flat sign by them as flats. Anyone know how to tell? Cuz i'd just be playing them as regular notes and messing this thing up lol
Hi my name is john and would like to Ask you a question what do I to do to understand in piano when playing any song I not good at that I can play piano but I can't play any song help to understand please
I wish you would have slowed this down for new players. I couldn’t keep up with it so I’m having to find a video more adjusted to a new student.
Can you please do a tutorial on ROSE- Gone? Pretty pleeeease!
I was wondering if you could slow it down and explain more when you say lets do it slowly. Just because it still seems pretty fast and it’s hard to pinpoint what fingers are doing what. Sorry but awesome tutorial thank you ❤
Please, make a video about the music chords of the suzume no tojimari soundtrack, it must sound very sweet🥳🥳🥳
I recommend listening to Brandi Carlile's cover.
that reminds me: can you teach Cat Stevens - Wild World too?
ill put it on the list!
Please do tutorial on " Thank God " by Kane brown
Hi Lisa, can you do Nocturne Op.9 No.2 please? I’ve learnt so much from you, you’re amazing!
Are you interested in the original score (for advanced pianists) or a beginner, simplified version?
Will you take online keyboard class for my daughter 9yrs old ?

First comment!!
Second!
ill take it!!
🌹🧡🧡👼🏻😘
:)
The left hand needed a better lesson
Although it's the original key, I think it is easier to play in Am key.
Try Am, C, G, D... your welcome.
Thanks for the easy alternative!
Your microphone sounds so high pitched! Can't concentrate!!!
You didn't even mention the original and best in you video 🙄 .... Tears for Fears
You don’t actually teach, you just play the piano on video
if you say so 👍
What about doing a little search about what pianote is before typing such comment?
@@aykackeremcan how about respecting other’s people opinion, like pianote did?
@@giulianosolinas2725 did i say anything disrespectful? I gave an advice to check what pianote is. This is not disrespectful. It was obvious that you made a comment without having a knowledge.
@@aykackeremcan disrespecting and not respecting, have 2 different meanings. This is my view of the way she “teaches”. End of the story. If you don’t think like I do, peace ✌️.
Great 👍
