I once dropped a crucible full of some chemical that was reacting in it (I have a really shaky grip) and it burnt a hole through the table.
My Chem teacher started calling me 'Danger Girl' after that 😭

Small note, if you do happen to need to pour something slowly, don't hesitate to use a glass rod to help you in not dribbling it down the side of the container.
Put the glass rod in the thing you are pouring into and pour the liquid down the side of the glass rod and it will guide the liquid where it needs to go, overcoming the surface tension in the process. Particularly good for liquids that adhere to glass, like Water and anything dissolved in that water.

I remember watching this a few years back and now as a chemistry major I still go back to this video every now and then to tell people about the broken pipette/rod type of injury. Thank you so much for making this. :)
Don't know if anyone is reading this, but here's another tip- never dilute concentrated aqueous acid by simply adding water to it! Instead, add water to your beaker (or whatever type of equipment you're using) first and THEN pipette the acid into it. Otherwise, the first few droplets of water might react and heat up very quickly and end up splashing and causing burns. Be safe and stay curious!
My fondest memory in chem lab was getting concentrated hydrochloric acid on my shoe and it burning a hole into it in 3 minutes. Luckily my teacher used it as an example and gave me the money to buy a new pair :P

Rob Gilmore are you sure that it was conc. HCl? I happen to pour concentrated HCl on my clothes (and skin) every so often, since we do a lot of analysis and titrations in our chem lab, and it just behaves like water. It evaporates after a while. Maybe it was sulphuric acid.
So I was sitting in my (usually) boring lab safety class and the teacher says that she is going to show a video with a weird man explaining lab safety... my toughts: 'Ughhh here we go'. Then I see the beginning of the video. Wait? wait? wait! That's Hank Green!! :D. That made my day.

My had a lab accident in regards to disposing what I think was Benzilic acid, or some other fatty acid. The instructions for the lab were poorly worded so we prematurely percieved that we needed a new acid to work with. However, (and you can tell we were geinuses when you see the next part of my story and know that the experiment was specifically concerning boiling point elevation and freezing point depressions with solutions), we disposed of it improperly in the sink and Benzilic acid has a melting point above 100 degrees Celsius and we, not remembering this kind of important aspect of the acid, poured it into the sink and turned on the water. *Ckhshhhhhhhhhhk* was the sound of the acid immediately solidifying on the entire bottom part of the sink, and *slap* was the sound of our hands into our own faces at the realization of what we had just done and the realization of how annoying it was going to be to clean up. It made for a very funny story to tell as y'all can see.

The only lab injury I've ever had was from sheer stupidity. It was in undergrad gen chem. My lab period was ending and I was in a hurry to dry my glassware. To get one of the test tubes totally dry, I used a rolled up paper towel and shoved it in with a glass stirring rod... Yeah, there was a fair bit of bleeding. The most memorable part is that once I ran to the infirmary, the nurses ended up pouring liquid Tylenol all over my hand! On the plus side, she looked at the wound under magnification and apparently, there were no glass shards in there. Good times...

Maybe it is a safety tip. I mean, long neck ties are more likely to catch fire and drip into flasks because they're longer, kind of like long hair safety.
And as the good Doctor said. "Bow ties are cool."

I watched this video for the first time like 2 years ago and I still get hanks voice in my head telling me to "commit" when pouring anything and a lot of other things in life that follow the same principle. Very valuable advice both for chemistry and life!

Oh my God I watched this in chem today and it made me so happy to see Hank when she turned the video on.
Hank forgot to mention that you should keep the door locked. In that way, you buy yourself a few extra minutes to flush the evidence when the cops break the door down.
I was also taught to always pour acid into the other liquid you're adding it to. If it splashes, it just displaces the less harmful material.
It's worth mentioning that MSDS sheets are in the process of being replaced with globally standardized SDS sheets.
Yeah, it wouldn't hurt to update this video with a quick mention of the new Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (www.osha.gov/dsg/hazcom/ghs.html). Maybe it could be spliced in between a scene cut?

Here in India most of the Higher Secondary students use just a labcoat for safety(which by the way many forget to bring for practical class). Noxious gases? Well, we breath and cough. Interesting to see the entire class(including the teacher)coughing. Still all this makes the lab life memorable-burns, heating the test tube as if cooking food, fumes, broken apparatus and on goes the list

When I was in my Junior year of high school I was a lab assistant for the Chemistry teacher and another student and I were assigned to go around each week to all the science rooms and test the eyewashes and showers. Best Job Ever. XD

thank you for having a solution to pouring solutions. I'm really short and trying to pour something into a burrette while making it rain on my station was pretty embarrassing and i couldn't do much about it but now one shall commit thank you sir.
I had a bunsen burner tube come off the burner and the tip of it ignite in the fume hood. All I said to the professor was "Emergency, gas off." and he simply turned the gas off with no hesitation. If I met anyone who I was in that lab with, they would probably remember me just for that event and how large and hot the flames were inside that fume hood.
I'd like to take a moment to appreciate the fact that he is wearing a potter puppet pals shirt.

How unscientific! My labmates and I test to see whether any liquid is flammable! if it is, get a whole beaker of it and set it on fire... for science.

Thank you for the summary of the points at the end of each presentation. It helps me know which parts I was not paying attention to.
At my old uni, those emergency showers were often located in hallways, near bookcases and other places you wouldn't normally want water, so it was pretty obvious they were for emergency use only. Also in most labs (I wasn't in the chemistry departments much) eye wash was with a specially shaped glass in the first aid kit, not that smart fountain you showed.
We once did an reaction where it said to add a thermometer and keep the temperature at around 100°C and my teacher said, cooking water is always at 100°C so we do not need a thermometer. What he didn´t know at this time is that the reaction results in enthalpy so you actually had to cool it down to 100°C...

This is a great video. I love your entire series and used your videos when I was studying to add additional content areas to my certification. I would like to recommend (more like beg) that you make a few of your videos more basic for middle school classrooms.
One time my chemistry teacher cleaned up some hydrochloric acid (just a few drops that landed on the counter) with a paper towel and threw it in the garbage bin. Then he found some dripped sodium hydroxide on the surface and cleaned it up with another paper towel and threw it in the same bin. Acid + Base = explosion, flames, and smoke alarm. So remember kids, always know what you throw away in your trash bin XP

I have actually stuck a glass rod through my hand, but not how Hank described it. I was 14 and my science teacher was talking about how the kind of glass it's made of can't hurt you. So, determined to prove him wrong, I took a glass stirring rod, broke it and then forced it through my hand. I didn't expect that it would actually go through because the edge did feel blunt, but it sure as heck did go through like a hot knife through butter. I told my teacher and all he did was tell me to go to the bathroom to clean it up. So I trailed blood to the bathroom and wrapped it in toilet paper for the rest of the day.

I wish I could for your own benefit if nothing else, but I did indeed track an impressively crimson chain of blood drops to the science-wing bathroom. Mind you this was nearly 20 years ago, so many subsequence stirring rods have been manufactured thus far.
+Nothing\ well i think we all have our own little stories. I once jammed, and I kid you not, a needle into my palm. The needle, thankfully only contained some deionised water but imagine if it contained, say hydrochloric acid...
John Yyc I've actually stuck a long thin needle through my palm. Also gave myself the biggest bruises ever setting up IVs with absolutely no knowledge of how to do them.

This was a good episode, it's applicable to any lab you work in. I'm not studying chemestry but I have found this series interesting - this episode I found useful.
The lab I'm an intern at has an emergency shower... I've always wanted to know what it looked like when showering xD
Not very relevant note on the hair rule: it was Christmas mass in church and I don't know if everyone does this Christmas Eve but we light candles at a point during the mass. Everyone has their own little stick of a candle that they hold and pray for both baby Jesus and in hopes that the wax doesn't drop onto their fingers. Anyway, my aunt's hair once caught on fire in the middle of everyone being quiet and solemn and praying so yeah. Not relevant but I thought I'd share.

Love your Videos, I learn so much more than i did in simple chemistry class!
I was a safety officer a long time ago and would demonstrate the eyewash/shower sometimes. The water initially was warm and it gave me an excuse hide in the office for a few hours while I dried off. The teacher I had for basic and advanced chemistry was very keen on lab safety. He became a teacher after a lab accident where he worked left him slightly handicapped. Great video!

One I feel should be mentioned, never wear contact lenses in the lab, some organic solvent can cause them to literally fuse to your eyeball!

I really hope you're joking. Even if you're in an intro level course, a small amount of precaution could save you a lot of pain. I had chemical burns from a slight bit of carelessness just opening a container in intro chem, (NaOH into my face) and I've known people with far worse from lab accidents, including permanent scarring. (One guy still has glass shards stuck in his torso) Taking a little time to get used to the lab isn't much of an effort.
Besides, this video is a lot shorter and more entertaining than most safety training is.

Hey Crash Course people, can you please update this video? There are some issues with it! (disclaimer: I teach college level organic lab, hello my students who I told to watch this video!) (1) Hank doesn't wear goggles and he keeps touching his glasses with his GLOVED hands...a no-no in lab! Take your gloves off to scratch your nose or adjust your glasses! (2) Lab Safety is going away from the hazard diamond to GHS pictograms, hazard classes and categories so this should be updated. (3) DILUTION IS NOT THE SOLUTION the EPA will fine you a bazillion dollars. In research labs it is against the law to dispose of anything with a pH > or = 12.5 or < or = 2 in any other way than as hazardous waste.
Well he did say it's for some chemicals like common acids. Most common acids in labs are diluted by default. He did say others should be properly disposed of.
