Checking the tension meter calibrator for accuracy

  • I built my tension meter calibrating fixture ten years ago. I trusted the accuracy of the crane scale I used for the build, but I always intended to have the scale checked. So ten years later, I finally did it.

Great video, i always learn something new watching your videos.
I guess you could measure the weight of something, using your calibrated scale, and store it for future reference, so you don't need to have your scale tested again. Preferably you would want to weigh something that can't absorb moisture, like a metal weight lifting disk on a chain.

Thanks for the comment. I have marked and stored the stones I used as a calibration weight.

Do you have the link for the original video of your Calibration Jig?

Could I ask where you got the fixture you use to hold the spoke nipple side of the spoke? I assume the J bend side is just a slotted hole in a piece of steel.
As an idea to test your scales, if you have one you have tested to be accurate, could you just bolt two of them back to back into your fixture, and then use your tension adjusting bolt to load them both simultaneously? That would perhaps have the added benefit of allowing you to compare them for linearity against different load values without swapping them in and out of your engine hoist?

The clevis has a m10x1.25 internal thread so I just drilled a hole through the middle of an m10 bolt for the nipple.
I'm sure testing the scales in series would work too but I would have had to scrounge up the hardware to link them. Besides, any excuse to haul out the engine hoist is a good excuse.
