I totally agree. This song is by far the best song of her entire career. It is so catchy, smooth, great instruments, great vocals, great lyrics.

Bizarrement plus trop avec les années et le fait qu'elle se soit embourgeoisée et qu'elle montre un peu plus de sa sensibilité et de sa vie privée. Les journalistes là voient plutôt comme une inspiration pour les nouvelles générations de chanteuses. Elle est passée au statut d'icône pop, véritablement.

The whole "Anamorphosée" album is astonishing and worth exploring. The other singles are "XXL", "L'instant X", "Comme j'ai mal" and "Rêver". Both the uptempo, grungy "XXL" and the ballad "Rêver" have been part of her live shows on a regular basis. "Rêver" is like Mylene's version of Lennon's "Imagine".

I'm really enjoying all of your reactions to Mylène Farmer videos! It reminds me of my first experience of discovering her work and becoming a fan, where I fell in love with her music before I even knew what she or her videos looked like. After watching those, she became one of my all-time favorite artists. I live in the United States, and I wish more people here knew about her (and Laurent Boutonnat's) incredible work.
P.S. "Anamorphosée" (1995) is definitely her rock album and might be my favorite, with "Vertige", "XXL", and "L'Instant X" as highlights. Also, Giancarlo Esposito is now undoubtedly best known for playing "Gus Fring" in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, so he's doing well!

She's a true actress. It's her first "school". And she's Incredible with horses, you can see all of this in "Libertine" and "Pourvu qu'elles soient douces".
What you make me think about this song (that is one of my favourite) is that the 2 Mylène have one point in commun: they are boring of her life and they are not free. The both are stuck with a bossy man putting the pressure on her. And I think when the rich Mylène saw the Mylène prostitue she realize that their life were similar (unhappy, boring, under pressure). When the prostitue Mylène was killed because she tried to rebel against the man, the rich Mylène tries to avenge, to rebel and to free oneself from this domination.

When it comes to rock Mylène, you should check out "Vertige (live 96)". It's the opening song of her Tour 96. The entrance itself is not that impressive (though it was at the time) but the song... Gosh, so rock!!!
I´ve seen several of your videos Dereck so far but now is the time to subscribe. You feel music like I seldom see in other people and that´s beautiful. My first reaction to hearing California around 2009 was just like yours. I was completely blown away and still after so many years I get goosebumps on hearing it. It is a musical masterpiece and the best thing about it is it sounds so easy and casual like the last thing Myléne was trying to impress someone. There´s so much depth and melancholy in it that it almost hurts, though in a good way.
It’s one of my favorite songs from his 90’s period... The music video is incredible, the music beautiful, nothing to complain about.

First of all I am happy that you reacted to it, I was one of the ppl who suggested it. The sultry California is a kick-off song to her 1995 album Anamorphosée, which she recorded in Los Angeles. This is my favorite Mylene album because it sounds drastically different from the rest of her albums. It has a lot of American rock influences, with the organic sounds of electric guitars, bass, electronic organs, the heavy beats, etc. - which is why the album does not sound dated... and California is the finest example of that! It is one of my favorite Mylene's songs... it is also obvious that she likes it too as she performs it on almost every tour! A couple factors played into why she temporarily relocated to the USA....1) her mega success after 1991 album L'Autre (from which Desenchantee is a huge hit) and 2) her flop 1993 movie Giorgino. Staying in France after such a turbulence was too much for her! Her long time collaborator Laurent Boutonnat must totally be credited as he is the one mostly responsible for the melodies and the arrangement. California is the best song on the album, but there are others that have a more hard rock feel to them.... Vertige, L'Instant X and XXL. Rever is a rock ballad that is another iconic song that she performs on every tour!

For me Mylenes most touching and beautiful song is "Rever" 1996 live Bercy version, I hope you will review that someday also! Her "Vertige" intro for that concert is also something visually extraordinary.
And the video is directed by Abel Ferrara, who also did "Bad Lieutenant" (1992), "King of New York" (1990) and "Ms .45" (1981) films as well.

Oh Derek! When you said "it makes me think of Basic Instinct, the movie" I was like "you don't even know the end of the MV, how do you know???" So glad that you decided to listen to that song, her album Anamorphose is considered her best album by the critics, the fact that she spent months in California helped her create new songs, more rock on sound level (L'instant X, XXL are proof of that).
I'm joining other comments, if you can find the MV of "Je te rends ton amour" uncensored (at the time it was censored by channels, with only a broadcast between midnight and 5am so she decided to sell VHS of the MV and the funds were donated to AIDS charity), you will bluffed as well (and guess what, drums!!! right in the intro ;) )

I see your enthusiasm for this vidéo and I just can agree with @Fleur d ... I can't wait your react on "Libertine" and "Pourvu qu'elle soient douces" which are respectively titles from 1986 and 1988. It's really important to note this to really understand what artistic revolution it was at that time. Of course with today's rap videos we're in stone now. But believe me in 86, it wasn't the same. Therefore, I think if they were out in the United States at that time, the both videos surely would have been totally censored (and maybe even today).
I'd also like you react to two performances of Lara Fabian (the both videos exist in English subtitles version).
The first is "Je suis malade Lara Fabian French and English subtitles" (cut and paste to search on Google). But for this one I advise you first to read the English translation of the lyrics. Then, to see the original performed by Serge Lama who's also lyrics author of this song (the music is by Alice Dona, his best friend). Look for "Serge Lama Je suis malade | INA Archive" (cut and paste to search on Google). Why am I asking you this? In fact, it's so that you can compare the two very different ways of approaching the song. Serge Lama, if we pay attention, puts himself in the shoes of the child he was to interpret the song. Une artiste unique, qui ne se vend pas au media ni a personne, et qui ne fait aucun compromis.
ce n'est pas la plus grande voix de la chanson on en conviendra tous, mais meme sur ce terrain elle est unique car elle transporte son publique qui a l'impression qu'elle chante juste pour lui.
Elle cultive l'elegance, la politesse, et la discretion et finalement elle donne aux gens qui l'écoute une leçon de savoir vivre, de tenue et de hauteur dans notre rapport a l'autre... et ce sans ouvrir la bouche!
Quand aux concert et bien la encore personne ne fait ce qu'elle fait de la maniere dont elle le fait.
