I have an MBA. I was impressed with myself for getting it, until later in life I realized it was a survey degree of all the different departments in a modern, large corporation, and really serves a filtering mechanism for corporations to find promising young hiring recruits who will ascend into management. I didn't really learn any particular business, and very little about how the economy really works.

Man, I founded and run a small business and I sometimes feel insecure about not having an MBA and graduating from a non-business course. After reading your comment, I thought maybe I just need to study more of what I already know in running the business

@@samon_kurowassan Do that, and whatever you do, learn how the Federal Reserve bank works, what it's objectives are, what its plans are. There are huge resources for you at the federal reserve web sites themselves, and there is a lot of information there that is updated weekly so you can monitor the national economy. I'd have many times my current net worth now if I had understood the Fed all along. The Fed is the wind that blows the economic sea. I have a memo referring to MBAs by Ace Greenberg framed on my wall.
That said, I’ve found that, aside from being a golden ticket, my degree has helped direct and focus my learning. For example, someone who has taken a financial accounting course has an idea of the importance of financial reports when it comes to finding investments. Whereas someone who has not may not even think about looking at a 10k before investing. They might not know what it is, or how to read one. Not knowing where to start can lead to deciding not to, which can be a very expensive mistake over the long run. However, you do have to be self motivated enough to decide to focus on the concepts introduced to you in the classroom, outside of the classroom, to really find use in the teachings.
Your college will get you started but it’ll blue ball you, leaving it up to you to finish.

@@TheGreekGodOfWallStreet Well, it turned out to be a "golden ticket" to me too. I got a job with an IT consulting firm, which led to a relatively cushy corporate IT job, and money and benefits, and an earlier than usual retirement. But, I had to be real about what I actually learned getting the MBA versus the "filter" I had been put through to get me that job.

There aren't any useless degrees, just people who don't know how to market their services. Yeah, only 3% of psychology majors work as psychologist but a lot of them now work in tech companies with user experience and human-computer interactions. Sociology majors are hired by Google and Amazon to evaluate the social impacts of company policies and products. Music majors are often cited as the top students at coding bootcamps because they can recognize patterns and are typically good at math. English majors are hired in company communications teams and marketing departments. Marketers get paid a lot at large technology firms. There are hella anthropologists who also consult for tech companies. Get inside some of the largest tech companies or live in Silicon Valley and you'll see how the big players have really diverse teams to stay competitive as they develop new products

In the early 1980's, interest rates were so high (due to Volker's stopping the inflation of the 1970's) that students used to take out student loans just so they could deposit the loan money in money market savings accounts and harvest the difference between the interest they were to pay on the loan, and the interest they earned on the savings account. True fact. I was there.

@@BasementBerean sure, its definitely more risky and people can't take advantage of it to the same degree as they did then. But opportunities do arise that tilt the odds in the borrowers favor. I believe covid brought the federal student loan interest rate below 3%. At the same time some colleges were refunding students for certain expenses their debt paid for, in cash. Even at a total loss of principal, students wouldn't be in any worse position than if they had not received the loans in cash. Especially when you consider the pause on federal student loan interest & payments as well as all the forgiveness talk we have now. Hindsight is 20/20 but investing this student loan money when received (while the market was selling off) would have been quite rewarding even with the slight correction we've had this year. Given they invested it with some degree of competence.

Actually archeology was my dream job, except archeologists essentially make nothing unless they become a professor or write a bunch of books. So Instead I moved into an associates in CAD, when I started companies were crawling to find more drafters, when I graduated those jobs were all being outsourced and none were available. I got a job working on a Construction management team building the plant I currently work at. That was the only time I used any drafting skill. I worked over 700 hours of overtime and paid those loans off in 1.5 years. Currently paying my way through my undergrad in electrical engineering, a field that will always be in demand and doesn't have nearly enough workers. Certain fields require degrees and are worth it while many these days are a waste of money. I currently make more now than I will starting out as an engineer but in the long run I'll make more and be more marketable as an engineer than if I stay here with my fate tied to a dying industry.

  • @TheGreekGodOfWallStreet
    @TheGreekGodOfWallStreet 2 года назад +7

Here’s how to win at student loans if you are at the point where you are deciding whether or not to go to college:
    1. Go to school in-state to minimize costs.
    - this maximizes the percent of costs that you can cover with cheap federal loans
    - going out of state when you can’t afford it is a fast way to rack up debt exponentially and there will be a material difference in your loans vs someone who went in-state
    2. Work a part time job over summers, or even better, while in school.
    - the goal here is to establish cash flow while you are in school
    - this can be a frightening or intimidating thought, but it is very doable
    - you don’t want to get a prestige job, you want to get a job that works with students
    3. Take advantage of on-campus housing & services like meal plans, that you can pay for with loans.
    - To put this in context, my loans went almost entirely to my housing cost while in school. But at the same time I had no housing or food costs eating into my income. That’s two essential costs I was financing, so my part time job income went a lot farther
    - by covering your expenses with cheap financing, you can establish free cash flow with your part time job income
    - free cash flow is money left after necessary expenses that you can spend how you want (this strategy requires spending it wisely)
    4. Live relatively frugally with your part-time job income and learn to invest in the stock market.
    - if you are paying for your food and housing with loans, you won’t have to live that frugally. I had buffet style meals twice a day (at my schools dining hall, paid for via meal plan, financed through my loans) and my own room for 3 out of 4 years.
    - given (most of) your loans are not accruing interest while in school, it doesn’t make sense to make any payments on them if you can invest your free cash flow and have it grow
    - I understand not everyone is finance savvy, but you don’t need to be finance savvy to invest in an index fund.
    - don’t invest like a fool with nothing to lose, if you are tempted toward speculative investments or don’t want to take the time to learn how businesses work financially, go with an index fund instead of throwing darts
    5. Once you graduate, hold on to cheap loans
    - as I said before federal loans are cheap. Not only can they have perks, they are also often at lower rates. Lower interest rates are relatively easy to beat with money invested in the stock market.
    - don’t get intimidated by the dollar value of your debt, the real cost is the monthly interest payments.
    - a thought experiment to illustrate my point: if you had $30,000 in loans and $30,000 in cash, would you pay off your loans to save $300 a month in interest payments for 10 years? There is a lot you can do with $30,000 in cash, and less you can do with an extra $300 a month. Especially if you are just starting off.
    - there are repayment plans where payments start low and grow. Remember, lower expenses mean more free cash flow that can be invested.
    Other tips:
    1. Take out expensive private loans to finance any shortfalls.
    - if your loans and grants come up short, you will have to pay out of pocket or take out private loans to finance the rest of your costs.
    - private loans may be expensive, but they can be tamed and may work better for you than paying out of pocket (especially if you don’t have the money)
    - a few thousand dollars in private loans help stretch expenses, so instead of paying $6000 today you may choose to pay a few hundred a month for a few quarters
    - a part time job while in school will really help with these loans, as the rates are high enough that it makes sense to pay them off in a timely manner.
    - different private loans are structured differently, I used Sallie Mae and found them really useful.
Everyone’s situation is different and this process may or may not work for you. If you are terrible with money, you likely won’t be able to follow it. But if you are good with money, this can leave you substantially better off than simply going to school, and forgetting you are racking up debt. The goal of this plan is to maximize your net worth upon graduation, along with your liquid investments (spending power). If the stars align you could graduate with a positive net worth and the ability to pay off your entire debt multiple times. This doesn’t come from being extra risky in the stock market, it comes from being intelligent with your investments and spending, as well as being lucky with external factors like the jobs available to you as a student and the overall financial situations you are dealt.

Great video 🙌 But I must add, if you ever have the possibility to go to university you should go for it! Its much harder to get a job these days unless you have a education. Especially if you are from working-class backround. Of course there are exceptions but I cant stress education enough. Its also hard when you dont anyone who studied or can ask for help or advice but just keep on going! Read over and over again until you get it and read related litterature. In my country "college" is for free but in university you mostly need a studentloan. Its a hustle to pay back but with a other origin than the native here i had to get a masters-degree in order to get the job i have. I cold have had a job of course but less paid. If you are struggeling to get out of poverty study more of what you are good at ,(maths, governance, anything) and work in these or related fields. Thx aluxers for great video 🙌

Hey Alux right this video is very interesting and I agree with the fact that a degree does not level up our incomes there are many other ways to get same knowledge even better without paying that much and within less time however let's say I opt for individual learning which company will price my knowledge? Even though starting business is one of the best way to make money I may have to get experience being hired in a company so between a graduated candidate and me with my individual learning who are they going to choose?Thing is yes you are right but most of businesses still price a degree. I'd agree that the degree does not guarantee more money; the value is often in the fact that it gets you a job. I've been in several environments that required a bachelor's (in just about anything, really) to get a foot in the door. I think that's a poor way to do business, however, as most jobs do not require a degree to actually do the job. Engineering, law, medicine, etc. being the exceptions, of course.

Remarkable person reading this.. It’s going to get better; all it is a season of opportunity to grow and be better than before. Challenging times are meant to strengthen us, not to break us. Success doesn’t define to what happened to us; it is how we choose to deal with our circumstances. The more you grow and develop as an incredible person as you are, the more things will change for the better. Forgive more (for you), be grateful for even the smallest things (we have it way better than someone else), choose love over ego, choose humility over ego (humility is strength), and finally, invest into new skills so that your future self will thank you. Our lives will change forever the more we grow. Be thankful for the challenges for we know something greater is coming. Love you always - Nathalie ✨❤️

The point of an education is not higher income - that is just one of the benefits. If you have a college degree but can’t see that, then maybe you didn’t choose a good school or path, or you just need to reflect a little on your own goals. In any case, don’t be sucked into the negativity of this video. This tuber twists stats to mislead you: For example, if as she says, 36 percent of people with bachelor’s degrees earn more than people with master’s degrees, then 64 percent of people with master’s degrees are earning more, actually. That includes people who have only a bachelor’s but have worked for 30 years, achieving higher pay, and those who just earned a master’s this year. A liberal arts education might help you see the flaws in her arguments.

This channel is really starting to come across like propaganda for greedy idiots. "And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.
The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.
Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone NOT FOUND written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire." (REVELATION 20:12-15 NKJV)
Today, while you are still alive and able, may you repent from your sins, believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that JESUS CHRIST is your Lord and Savior, so that through Him, your name will be written in the Book of Life.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever BELIEVES in Him
should not perish but have everlasting life.
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." (JOHN 3:16-17 NKJV)
By God's GRACE ✝️, the gift of Salvation and Eternal Life is available to all. You can RECEIVE it. You can REJECT it. May you choose wisely.

Trump forgave so many loans from farmers and private companies who aren't low income
(Some are rich Congressmen) and Republicans never complained.
Fact is these students are low income or from low-income family who deserve a break.
Joe Biden is helping low- & middle-class family. This is good thing.

Low income or high income. Paying off your own debt gives you more self esteem and integrity. If you signed and pledge to do something than, the best thing for you is to do it. Be responsible. Giving should be no more than 10%. Otherwise it won't help the receiver in the least bit. Paying off their debt will only make more irresponsible people. And making the rest of us that paid our debt - low income and high income should not have to foot the bill for the those who are not responsible and don't pay their own debt. Joe Biden is only trying to buy votes. Think about it, seriously!

College is great! I don't care about all the disparaging things being said. Higher education is fun! Learning is fun! That professional polish you receive is worth the debt. The networking is amazing! College is very necessary especially for certain marginalized people. Also I don't see the rich and privileged ceasing to send their children to university. It may be a waste for those who refuse to see its value. Go learn a trade, tradesman are very valuable.
