    I inherited my mother's 30-ish year old rubber plant "bush" when she died last year. I had been taking care of it for a few years before she died, since it was in a part of the house that was difficult for her to get to (finished attic). I put it outside for the spring and summer and it got beastly. A severe hail storm (golf ball sized) earlier this year damaged most of the leaves.
    I may have to chop back all of it, starting over while propagating what I can from it. Last year I propagated a few cuttings for family members who wanted "a piece" of Mom.

    That is why you are the great surgeon in the bonsai world. You know your roots and you are not afraid to tackle them. Superb root surgery!

    This was great tree for demonstrating directional pruning...Such large leaves and your step by step narration made it very clear why and where you were cutting...I'm pretty sure I already understood the concept, but for some reason, the visual really made it sink in...Also enjoyed working through the pot selection...Thanks for more teachable moments...Red Lotus pot absolutely...There's OC trying to steal the show but no, its a quick, fleeting glimpse of that amazing Bird's Nest Spruce...That's Nigel...

    I love the rubber tree! My favourite thing about it is that it survieves quite a lot of inexperience - unlike a ficus benjamina, dying because I looked at it the wrong way!

    I always like it when you are trying different pots for a plant. Like watching somebody coming out of the fitting room. 😄This match was a particularly good one.
    By the way, do you still have the striped cat from before?

    Good work Nigel. I know ficus elastica gets a bad rap for bonsai, but I really enjoy them.
    It always makes me sad when I see the house plant version of these that are grown as just a single stick with leaves and no branches, especially knowing how amazing they grow in nature.

    Rewatching this episode and at 15:34 I was just thinking your scissors seemed dull when you mentioned it. Do you think it might dull the blades cutting thick roots in soil and using the tips to pick through soil? But the good news….a new skill to hone: blade sharpening!!! Nothing like a cutting tool with a sharp blade!!! GREAT pot. Best!

  • @jballenger9240
    @jballenger9240 2 месяца назад

    Wow the native “free range” trees are amazing. Thanks for the examples. 2 questions about your fantastic scissors: should you use different scissors or pruners for roots because of the soil that is inevitably going to be cut through? I would think the soil might dull your scissors. How will you sharpen your fine scissors and how often? Thanks as always. Many subtle lessons.

      I think Nigel said that he sharpens his scissors once a week..

    Brrrrrrr! At least your trees took the cold. How did the chickens and the ducks fair with the cold? Does Laura use a heater for them? Does she insulate the enclosures with leaves around the base of the houses? Just wondering.

    I have a little ficus elastica and I have read that I should wait until the branches have 6-8 to prune them. Is this true? Also, to prune it, the best time is before and after summer or I can do it like Nigel and prune it anytime?
