  • Welcome to a brand new SteynPost in which Mark expounds on some recent examples of a phenomenon John O'Sullivan, Mrs Thatcher's former speechwriter, noted some years ago: the ever more open contempt for the will of the people by the west's ruling class.

Yes, right on point Mark, as usual. And as we move along in this, the populace becomes more vocal, which then leads to bullying, and harsh admonishment and eventually violence. I wrote a single sentence at the end of one of my books (a training manual in my industry) where I mentioned being a person of faith who had been taught the value of tithing. It was my wish to encourage everyone to give a percentage of their incoming revenue to help those less fortunate and I went on to encourage readers to save an equal amount for investment, another equal amount for emergencies, another equal amount for relaxation and so on as part of an overall monetary management strategy. Recently I've been excoriated by an atheist, claiming my book is extremely boring (though she read all of it cover to cover) and that, essentially I should be run out of town for making HER feel less of a giving person because I mentioned my Christian upbringing. I have to leave the review in place, without comment, in case a flood of more like thinking people emerge to take my book down. Amazon's rules prohibit attacking any author personally but it's not enforced at all. And so more and more people are emboldened to attack authors who disagree with their worldview, their political view, their economic view, their religious view and every other conceivable view.

The problem is not with a ruling class, it's with a ruling ideology. Whether they are from grand families or not, our rulers for the most part can only wield power if they bow to progressivism. That's how you get the UK's "Conservative" party seriously considering allowing men to become women simply by uttering an incantation, and ordering companies to report completely meaningless statistics on gender and pay.

    •  6 лет назад +6

That's why the rule of law is better than the rule of man. Because you never know what kind of ruler you might end up with, but with the rule of law, they all have to follow that same law.

My biggest fear is that there is going to be revolution. I also feel that apathy towards the staus quo (It is out of my control) has led to the coming disastor. The only way to stop the oncoming disastor is to move towards the populist movement and take control of our governments once again. We are still a democracy and have the rights to kick out the trash and take back our countries.

Brilliant, Mark Steyn. Here's my take on Brexit from Mrs May viewpoint. My open letter to her.
    2 Sep 2018
    Dear Mrs May,
Thank you so much for writing to me via The Telegraph. I have read your letter with great interest.
I sympathise with you as a true technocratic supra-nationalist you are in an extremely difficult position. Although formally the Prime Minister of UK you are also a member of the European Council and as such you are duty bound to give precedence to the EU where there is a conflict of interest with UK's national interest. In effect you are the Governor of the EU provinces of England Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, Enscowalni. You are faced with an English led rebellion - it's always the pesky English who just will not be told. The continent has put up with this for almost a thousand years. It really cannot go on.
Nevertheless, being as stubborn as you are you have to your credit some very great achievements:
    1. Gained an ex-gratia payment to the EU of approx £39 billion without any legal basis whatsoever, unconditionally and for nothing in return.
    2. With your colleague Philip, you have successfully prevented funding of any concrete preparations for UK’s exit on WTO terms.
    3. You have manoeuvred UK to shoulder all responsibility to establish and police the EU’s border in Ireland on the EU’s behalf, and to insure against UK’s failure you have secured for the EU an unconditional veto on any proposal UK might make.
    4. You have in a quite theatrical manner at Chequers persuaded UK to accept continuing compliance with existing and new EU law for at least two and perhaps five or more years after UK leaves the EU.
    5. You have ended all British representation in EU institutions from 29 March 2019 thus ensuring free reign for the EU without the English interference that has bedevilled Europe for centuries.
    6. Most cleverly, and right under the noses of the rebels, you established your own personal executive arm within the UK government headed by the USSR admiring Ollie Robbins, with its own secret channels to the EU and selected heads of government in the EU, thus enabling you to completely undermine and circumvent the UK government. Using this you have successfully removed all rebels from power and forced the entirety of the remaining government to swear allegiance to a foreign power rather than UK. And nobody has been locked up in the Tower of London. Peace in our time, Theresa!
Obviously victory is not yet secure but it is in sight. At the EU summit in October you will sign the armistice and UK will formally become a vassal of the EU. It will take time but during the peaceful years to follow the English, as they did under William I, will learn to accept their new rulers with stoic, if surly, fortitude. Technocratic supra-national government will prevail and the post war experiment will be proven superior in practice having vanquished the world's oldest national democracy. Well, it will be superior at least until the EU transforms itself some time around 2025-2030 into a new nation state, The Federal State of Europe. But it will not make the mistake of allowing rampant democratic freedom to run riot over its perfect technocracy.
So Mrs May, you will go down in history as the woman who triumphed over the English after centuries of continental defeats occasioned by the Englishers' thirst for freedom from state oppression and control and you will have united this fractious continent in the face of their common enemy.
    Bravo, Governor May.
    I remain, ma'am,
    Your obedient servant,

Apologies for my verbosity but I get passionate about Brexit. Mark Steyn, technocratic supra-nationalism fits your concept of 'Post Democracy' perfectly. Mrs May - if she sincerely believes in anything at all relevant to the future of any country let alone UK - believes supra-national government to be superior to national democracy. It has always been her intention to keep UK as much in the EU as possible for this reason. Economics is incidental. It is not just limiting the damage caused by Brexit (post war declinism resurrected) - it is a positive desire to keep UK inside to maintain and deepen supra-national government. She has been able to hide her ambition behind ambiguous words. Thus she can say she wants a deep and comprehensive special partnership. We Brexiteers wanted to believe that meant a good trade deal, defence and security co-operation and so on. It did not. It meant being as much a subject (vassal) of the EU as she could possibly manage. There never was any vision of the world's fifth largest economy becoming sovereign and freely forming a mutually beneficial co-operative partnership whilst retaining its sovereignty. Sovereignty was never the goal, not even a significant consideration.
So now we have the Irish border 'problem'. Mrs May needs it to beat off Brexiteers as much as the EU needs it to beat down UK as a whole (The EU's strategy is entirely logical. A successful independent UK would be an existential threat so its independence must be strangled at birth.) That is why it has not been solved. Mrs May needs it to be a problem. In truth it is a non-problem. All it would take is to tell everyone there will be electronic systems put in place, there may be a need to make more physical checks depending on how well the system works but not at first. If Ireland and the EU want it to work it will work but they do have the capacity to make it fail. Up to them. As for UK, that is what we are going to do and it's off the table for further negotiations.
But Mrs May will not defuse the Irish border and will go on conceding to the EU in order to fulfil her real aim of supra-national government of UK.
Her long term goal is, no doubt , to position UK to join the final stages of EU economic and monetary union before the founding of the Federal State of Europe as outlined in the Five Presidents' Report (June 2015) and the follow up white paper, with treaty changes coming into effect around 2025. One year extensions of the transition period, just one at a time so as not to give the game away, will do nicely.
That is where Mrs May and her Remainers are taking us.
Why expect transparency and clarity from a technocratic supra-nationalist? The European Project is run with secrecy, stealth and deceit built into it at its foundation because its founders understood it could not be democratic and would be rejected by voters.

@25:42 If the political culture forbids respectable politicians from raising certain topics, then the electorate will turn to unrespectable ones.

MARK: Here, in the UK, we are ruled by some of the 'thickest' people on the planet! Our Media is also peopled with journalists of the same calibre. They know nothing about philosophies, or religions; and - yet - they are hyper-confident in pontificating on such subjects. They do not even undertake the academic work which is essential, BEFORE, you pontificate on some topic. Female LABOUR politicians are, especially, good at this. Dim as Toc-H Lamps!

“And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.”

I’d add that the historian Arnold J Toynbee said that civilisations fall when the internal proletariat loses confidence in the dominant minority, allowing the external proletariat to lay waste to the civilisation in question. Writing in the 40 s Toynbee was thinking largely of ancient civilisations, but I think it applies to the current situation in Western civilisation. I’ll leave it to y’all to assign the role of internal and external proletariat appropriately.
