  • Dawns first shades of gray and blue have only just begun to brighten the night sky, and already I can hear the celebrations happening on the streets of Egypt from my apartment window. Car horns are beeping excitedly as the holiday kicks off, firecrackers thrown by children momentarily overtaking the sounds of the cars. It's Eid Al-Adha, also know as the Feast of Sacrifice, the largest holiday in Egypt and in Islam. According to Islam, Abraham was about to sacrifice his son after being commanded to by God. But because he was obedient and willing to sacrifice his son, an angel then told him he could sacrifice a lamb instead. In commemoration of this intervention, animals are ritually sacrificed all over the Arab world. Part of their meat is consumed by the family that offers the animal, while the rest of the meat is distributed to the poor and the needy. The streets are packed, the atmosphere festive and the people exuberant, come experience this holiday with me as I experience it for the very first time myself here on the streets of Giza, Egypt.

Also, glad you didn't listen to the person that told you not to visit Egypt around this time, there's no real bad time to visit Egypt (well, unless we are talking in the middle of the summer in the south 😆). Did you get a chance to see any of the festivities on the streets/feel the vibes?

    Great video, as always - it was really interesting to see Cairo at Eid. It’s Eid here too, where I live in a small Turkish seaside town. They call it ‘Kurban Bayram’ though (Feast of Sacrifice) - and it’s INSANE as thousands and thousands have descended here for the holiday. They have introduced penalties for sacrificing in public places, though which is good. Well done Giselle!

    • @Gventures

      Yeah...a lot of animals around the world that are eaten for food don't have a good life or an easy death. In the US for example. So many factory farms, animals living in terrible conditions until they are taken for slaughter, and they know it's coming, they can hear the ones ahead of them, it can be horrific. It's pretty gruesome no matter how you look at it, in most cases. I eat meat too of course.

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures  Год назад

      I disagree, but don't take it the wrong way, I wasn't trying to offend anyone by saying that. I of course know there are plenty of people that wake up early and go to work here in Egypt, but compared to MOST countries I have been to around the world, traffic jams start much earlier, there are a lot more people moving at 6am, 6:30am, and here in Egypt those traffic jams don't happen till later. I have gone out very early and drove around (especially when I was learning how to drive my motorcycle here in Cairo-I would go and drive around from 5am-7am- because there was almost no traffic and I felt a lot safer learning how to drive). So of course there are people going to work and on the move, but COMPARED to other countries, it's not that busy.

It was just the way you said "What you said about that people get up late is not true and I think you didn't visit faisal street before cos I m living there and I have to go work earlier from the crowd that you didn't see." That made me think you were upset by me saying it wasn't busy.
      I was simply informing you I HAVE been on Faisal street early in the morning, many times, and quite recently, and it is not as busy and other major capitals around the world. Most places in Egypt are not that busy very early in the morning. I've been to 20+ countries and usually the roads are filled with traffic starting at 6am. Here in Egypt I remember it was one of the initial things that I noticed when I first arrived to the country, how quiet the streets were early in the morning compared to many other places I have been. That's all. Great to hear you're abroad, I hope you are doing well and happy wherever in the world you are! And I love your country, thanks so much for your kind words. 😊
