- A radio recording of a short-lived dance music radio station in Los Angeles during the mid-1990s. Groove Radio was created by Swedish Egil, a radio programmer who took the name with him after he was ousted midway through the station's run. The station later went by "Groove 103.1."
What's intriguing to listen to is how gay-friendly the station seemed to be, given it was 1996. The station has a vibe more similar to iHeartRadio's "Pride Radio" than it does with Chicago legend "Energy 92.7 and 5" or dance-pop "103.1 KDL" which later resurrected dance music in Los Angeles on the exact same frequency.
This recording was made on September 26, 1996. Thanks to whomever I traded aircheck tapes with for helping me get my hands on this recording.
I WAS THERE! I REMEMBER GROOVE PREMIERING WHEN I WAS 16!
Melrose Ave.
Thanks for this
Much love
Was my favorite radio station!
My favorite station ever. Never again will there be another station or another time like this, Groove 103.1 and the 90s.
Add Mars FM to the list - the same frequency
This just made my Tuesday evening better. Thank you for the memories!
I lived in LA at the time & GrooveRadio was HUGE! But there was quickly drama around one of their popular drive-time djs who I seem to remember either was a drag queen or took on a drag queen persona on the air. Something happened, someone was fired, I don't remember details...but that was the beginning of the end as I recall. But its brief existence was like a WeHo Camelot lol!
