    For good articulation the tongue has to do a lot more than start or stop the tone only. As Jazz is a legato style half-tonguing is the key to good articulation.

      The tongue does a lot more, but I am not sure it ought to do more. If you listen to Brecker, Parker and Coltrane, you don't hear the lazy tonging jazz style. The more I practice and learn the more I also realize that articulation is either on or off. When playing fast your tongue has to move fast and there is almost no time to move back and forth, and you do not stop the reed completely. But I would never deliberately practice to do this.

    Very informative video!! Exactly what I need for my Saxophone playing right now.
    Thank you!!

    This is great, very interesting for a trumpeter who is always studying saxophonists' language (including a LOT of Brecker). I hear some saxophonists that almost seem to "chew" the notes rather than actually tonguing; is this what you mean by the "lazy" tonguing style?

      Depending on who you are talking about... It could be that they are 'voicing' differently for each note. Ie changing the syllable shape of their throat and mouth

      We need a bar and some drinks to talk about this - this is a 2 hour workshop only on articulation and how to speed it up!
      There are so many ways of enterpreting this and do this.
      I know now that fingers are much more important and then you need to add the tongue later.
      And you totally need to focus on the timing.
      When this is done you will figure out the lazy stuff - half tonguing and almost tonguing.
      There are a lot going on in there!
      I would not practice the half techniques only the real deal - the rest comes to you when you have great control :)

      @@sorenballegaardmusic I’ll gladly take that bar hang if we can arrange it! Here’s a video I did on jazz articulation for the trumpet; I’d love to hear what you think: ruclips.net/video/NPUD4vI9_B0/видео.htmlsi=74Ii9P7EyDMCbWyV

      Because I need to key shift it for copyrights. Even if I only need 5 secs of music. The normal key is idd Cm.
      And great ears btw.

    Again super duper practical lesson! Just question; when you blow and tonguing the air still going through and you just stop the reed from vibration or you block air stream and is no flow while tong is on reed? Thanks

    • @sorenballegaardmusic
      @sorenballegaardmusic  Год назад +3

      The best question, down to details, and this is detail work. Nice.
      I stop the reed, and the most of the air. You add the tongue to the tip of the mouthpiece and the reed, mostly the reed, but not around the reed, so you stop the air you can. If I add my tongue and blow I will have a slight fizz sound of air escaping through the small gaps I do not close with my tongue. You do not want to overly apply your tongue, because you want to be fast as h...
      Please keep asking if anything.
      All the best and have a great articulation

    How long should I hold my tongue on the reed

    • @sorenballegaardmusic
      @sorenballegaardmusic  11 месяцев назад

      Depends on how long you want the tongue to stop the sound. This is what the tongue does.
      I would say very short - like extremely short!
