I've got a golden pothos that has been shooting off runners for a few years now. I started putting the cuttings in my ten gallon to grow roots and not only did the roots shoot out faster, but it made a huge difference in the nitrate levels in the tank. It also provides pleanty of cover for my betta. Love this plant... super easy to take care of too.
I love my pothos! And they come in so many nice varieties. Neon green, classic green, variegated with golds and creams and yellows, spotted with silver dots, and edged with white. Pothos is lovely, it is the anubias of the house plant world : )
A caution though, you will see evaporation from your aquariums go up DRAMATICALLY with the use of pothos. The evapotranspiration through the leaves is much more than you can imagine.
Yup my pothos must go through several gallons of tank water per week. I took them out for a couple of months and had very little evap .... put the cuttings back in and sure enough back to weekly gallons .... worth it though!
Great point. I think the pros certainly outweigh the cons since this is easily remedied, but very important to look out for. Hate to waste free real estate
I put my pothos in net breeder baskets that hang on the front of my tank away from the back hanging filters completely. They are amazing workhorses in regard to water quality and they are air purifiers as well.Thank you for the great video.
Finally a video on Pothos. Been growing for a while now, and find once its setin will grow a leaf each week! Which is crazy fast!!! Thanks for putting this content out there. bravo
I have gathered many pothos growing on a giant tree. Now I have many hanging plants and thanks to your video, some of them will end in my aquarium and fish pond. To whoever planted that pothos in our acacia tree years before, thank you very much😊 Enjoy gardening and your 🐟.
Really helpful. I didn't know there were several plants in the pot. I had struggled with figuring out how to use it and now I have several starts in my aquarium.
Thanks for making this video. I too have Pothos in my tanks. Never thought it could survive being in the tank. Thought it was only the roots. Thanks again.
My pothos root so much faster in my aquarium than in water, and they compete with algae better than most of my aquatic plants (which may partly be due to the fact that they don't provide much extra surface area for algae to grow underwater). Some beautiful mutualistic symbiosis delivered straight to my living room :)
Put it in my AquaClear 500 (ah the memories) as a nitrate eater for my 55 gallon goldfish tank (because like yours, my goldfish made quick lunch of live plants in the tank) and talk about growing like weeds! It looked great hanging off the back, over the rear of the lid across the tank, and into the rear. Wonderful plant!

I like the short video for a specific topic! Something like an 8 hour stream on tetras is interesting but not helpful to research a topic I've googled. I just watched your fish netting video and it was so nice to get an answer on exactly what I needed at the moment! The longer streams are more for entertainment that I might watch for future research. I originally found you and your channel researching lighting options, and I was hooked! LOL
Cory Jimmy the video quality has really gone up sense you guys teamed up. I never wanted to miss a video before and now I look forward to them even more.
Pothos plants are great. It helped me lower the nitrogen level in my fish tank. I haven't done any water changes since then. All of my fishes are thriving not showing any signs of sickness. Thanks Cory.
I have a video on my channel on this subject, but under controlled conditions with a huge quantity of potho (10 gallon root ball) , it has only limited affect on Nitrates reduction in a heavily stocked african cichlid tanks. I recently bench marked the aquaponics industry and the industries nearly unanimous choice for nitrate reduction is members of the mint family (aka, peppermint, chocalate mint, and many more variants). The distinct advantage is that they are very "leafy", and grow very fast. I have converted my grow beds to mint plants and so far so good. The pothos idea captured a lot of interest, but in my experience it is beautiful, interesting, but of limited help in taking out nitrates.
I have a south facing window, and after one week it is growing like crazy already. According to my google search " They (mint family) do well in lightly shaded areas with adequate moisture and relatively fertile soil"
I have, not only pathos, but wild potato vines(green&purple), bamboo, a small maple tree(2+ years old now) plus 3 or 4 other things growing outta most of my HOBs... Hangs to the floor and the bamboo is touching the ceiling, it's starting to get crazy and is in need of some trimming...! Thanks Cory and gang for your awesomeness...! Keep it up...!
I wonder how efficient these Pothos are on soaking the nitrates. It would be great if there was a experimental tank shows the before and after readings.
Pothos One of the primary reasons Pothos is popular is it can tolerate lower light, lower humidity and cooler temperatures than many other plants. Pothos are rated one of the best houseplants for removing all indoor air toxins. Pothos also goes by a few other names: devil's ivy, pothos ivy and has a few cultivars. The most common variety "Golden Pothos" gets the most use in the interior business. Two other varieties are "Marble Queen" with a streaky white on green and "Jade" which is green. Good for bathroom and office

I have pothos in my little fish pond. I planted them in plastic pots which I punched lots of holes in and with just gravel so the water can move through the roots. The goldfish nibble on the roots and leaves that hang into the water a little. (The leaves need to grow above water). It grows like crazy and I'm always trimming it.
Corona Ken I was told it was toxic for fish if they eat the roots (can't remember about the actual plant part being tocic to them as well) from a pretty good fish store. I did some research and I think I remember finding that it was.

Great! This video is fantastic. I always wondered about pothos and if it was actually safe for aquariums, knowing it could be toxic to animals. So it is okay if fish nibble at the roots then?

I have lots of plants growing in my home. The fastest way to propagate plants is to place cuttings in aquarium. Fish friendly plants, especially pothos. Now i buy aquariums instead of vases. Lol
Hi! Can the plant stay in the tank indefinitely or will it eventually rot? Also, I’ve seen people grow emerged anubias on top of bio media in a hang on filter and was wondering if this plant could be used like this as well? Thanks!
Good topic. Might want to use a clip on Mic though because the bubbling sound is fighting with your voice. In fact use mics for all your video recordings. It will make them greater.
Hi. Love your videos. Fish (Buenos aires tetra) in my tank like to snack on pothos roots until roots are gone. Does plant still work to remove nitrates without roots?
to all those interested,,, pothos CAN be grow completely submerged. I have play sand in my tank instead of gravel and it actually GROWS in it. It has new shoots and leaves no dieback as of one month.....anyone else try it? let us know

I have lots of plants growing in my home. The fastest way to propagate plants is to place cuttings in aquarium. Fish friendly plants, especially pothos. Now i buy aquariums instead of vases. Lol
I need to get on this plant at some point, doesn't seem all that available over here, could be on a banned list if it grows that aggressively
Hey Cory I got two stems from my cousins the roots starting growing out how long til
The pothos starts growing ?
Do you need to use any fertilizers for the pothos plant when placing it in water?
Hi! Can the plant stay in the tank indefinitely or will it eventually rot? Also, I’ve seen people grow emerged anubias on top of bio media in a hang on filter and was wondering if this plant could be used like this as well? Thanks!
We have lots of these growing around the house but most of them are in ground and of big lengths. Can those be used like this?
Thanks for the info. Informative
Good topic. Might want to use a clip on Mic though because the bubbling sound is fighting with your voice. In fact use mics for all your video recordings. It will make them greater.
does it really reduce nitrates? how does it compare to floating plants like hornwort and anacharis?
So having a pothos plant is only for non-planted tanks to keep nitrates down?
Ronald Bondal it could steal nutrients that a planted tank would need. That's why it's better for non planted tanks.
Loved the video. I want to do it as well. Does it matter what type of Pothos? How could I safely put this in a turtle tank?
I am unsure in a turtle tank specifically. As to type of pothos I believe all common varieties work.
Hi. Love your videos. Fish (Buenos aires tetra) in my tank like to snack on pothos roots until roots are gone. Does plant still work to remove nitrates without roots?
It would probably be best to place it in the filter if possible.

Ok thank you
I use them in my tank and love them. But I didn't know you can grow under water. I will have to try that.
I wonder if they remove ammonia.
+Michael Wells they would, yes
Yes you can use them to cycle the tank as well
to all those interested,,, pothos CAN be grow completely submerged. I have play sand in my tank instead of gravel and it actually GROWS in it. It has new shoots and leaves no dieback as of one month.....anyone else try it? let us know
