    Words that I learnt today:
    Swanky = using one's wealth, knowledge, or achievements to try to impress others.
    Sappy = mawkishly over-sentimental
    Countenance = support or approval
    Gumption = shrewd or spirited initiative and resourcefulness.
    Flip on a switch = change suddenly.

    The reason why LKY is such a respected leader both in Singapore and abroad is partly due to his communication skills. He speaks like a Chinese Singaporean speaking plain English instead of trying to sound like a westerner. What separates LKY and guys like Jamus apart is that LKY offer practical solutions, while Jamus is all about text book reading.

    Dr Jamus Lim highlighted his party’s stance of opposing a GST hike as it believes that there are other ways for Singapore to tap on revenues in order to minimise economic hardship for the general public.
    He also pointed out some of the suggestions made by WP for revenue generation in Parliament, which include increasing the Net Investment Returns Contributions (NIRC) from 50 per cent to 60 per cent, tapping on a portion of land sales, increasing duties on sales of high-end properties or introduce a modest wealth tax.
    For those who say that these methods can use up the country’s reserves, Dr Lim explained that it does not.

    "That's why we don't have Nobel prize winners..innovators.." sounds pretty much like singing the same old tune as Chee in the earlier episode, I was really hoping to hear more depth in the discussion on the concrete steps or specific reforms needed in the education system as to how to create the next Nobel Prize Winner.
    But then again can attributes like risk-taking, innovation or creativity really be taught? How do you train a child to become the next Nobel Prize Laureate?

    • @scbchong6964
      @scbchong6964 Год назад +2

      I think WP finds it hard to acknowledge that majority of their supporters are Haters, complainers and duds. If you work, you know that those who complain the most, blame others and kpkb alot are usually inconsiderate, arrogant arseholes, jerks and creeps. That's the shameful secret WP got to deal with.

    • @Averagebum21
      @Averagebum21 Год назад +5

      You’re missing the point. The point is that we should avoid compelling children to be trained to do what adults want them to do, as that thinking, suggested here by you, is precisely what hinders the development of creativity. Dr Lim brought up several examples, one of which was the avoidance of pressuring young kids (eg 3 year-olds that he mentioned) to undergo some form of training or participation in formal education, and another being the girl who had been earning 5K SGD a month being forced to go to university.
      So, it is precisely the assumption that a fixed path of education or training has to be followed to produce excellence that seems to hinder the development of creativity. Developing successful entrepreneurs and innovators is complicated and tricky, but the first step is to remove the obstacles that hinder the development of the talents that lead to them being such, rather than the introduction of more training programmes.

    • @kiattat4409
      @kiattat4409 Год назад +1

       sorry if I am completely missing the point here.
      If the solution is as simple as what you said to "stop pressuring young kids" and "stop emphasizing on formal education" then places like Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya with limited access to formal education should be doing very well in the Nobel Laureate department, trailblazing trends and innovations.
      Needless to say, it is complicated and tricky, that's the reason why he is being voted in to get the job done no?
      Otherwise, anybody also can bring up examples and describe a never-ending list of problems but how many really can prescribe the right solutions and say this is what we should do exactly and set the country on the right trajectory to achieve new heights?

      @@kiattat4409
      (1) Did you see the phrase “the first step” in my reply?
      If you send your son to soccer training and insists that he wears Crocs instead of soccer boots, and ask why he isn’t progressing, and the coach tells you the first step would be to stop forcing your son to wear Crocs to play, are you doing to retort that all the soccer players in the world who don’t wear Crocs must automatically be world-class soccer players? Or if you send your daughter to table-tennis training and insist that she uses a pen-holder grip and the coach tells you to stop forcing her to use a pen-holder grip, that therefore all tennis-holders must be world-class table-tennis players? Or if you should spend fewer hours watching TV in a day, that you would automatically earn a PhD?
      (2) And he did:
      29:03 Avoid forcing children into academic or other curriculums at a young age (3 - 4 years young) and “setting arbitrary benchmarks.”
      29:39 We need to realise that “the nature of knowledge and productive knowledge is no longer what it used to be.”
      30:06 What are important are (a) Developing a problem-solving approach and (b) Being able to ask questions regarding what the existing problems are.
      30:31. Realising that we are at the frontier, and now the hard work begins of pushing the boundaries of that frontier.
      32:13. Avoid valuing only being a good “operator.”
      32:23 Innovators tend to be the ones who not necessarily academically successful but who (a) Think differently and (b) Dare to question the established rules and governing bodies.
      32:35 Be willing to try and fail, and have enough character to bounce back.
      32:54 Our young parents have to be willing to use a different model.
      33:07 Allow those who pursue avenues of success that they have discovered themselves to continue doing so without forcing them through established academic paths.
      33:33 Value is what other people are willing to pay for and we can develop products that consumers want.
      (3) The reason producing innovators is complicated and tricky is that it is different from using the established methods and paths of forcing and training people to be good operators. Innovators are likely to be nurtured by a conducive environment where (a) One’s livelihood is not at threat if one deviates from the conventionally expected path, academic in Singapore’s case, and (b) The child is allowed to explore the subject of their passion rather than forced to worry about getting good grades.
      Because Singapore has such a high cost of living and salaries are hugely dependent on academic success, with many if not most persons of lower academic qualifications struggling to even make ends meet, the path of academic pursuits is more or less a fixed one, thus essentially stifling the development of creativity. So your example of Ethiopians and Somalians is actually supportive of this observation, that people who are struggling to make a living don’t really have the room to develop their creativity. Of course, with poorer people, the resources may not even be adequate. But as most Singaporeans are struggling to make ends meet, we are not very different in terms of necessarily focussing our energies on survival rather than exploration, even if we have the resources in terms of information and training.
      Another example from sports are the foreign athletes we bring over to compete under our flag. Even if they have come from a family who isn’t very wealthy eg poorer farmers (and not all of them have necessarily come from a family of farmers), if they fail, they will be less likely not to be able to survive as they could return to their families and farm to survive, something most of us are unlikely to be able to do here. So our world-class athletes are fewer and rarer, limited to a few swimmers, badminton players, bowlers, etc. Simply because for most of us, if we fail, we will hardly be able to survive doing menial jobs here.
      Even if someone was passionate about an academic subject and was a potential Nobel laureate, being able to pursue their interest in the subject through exploration, participation in international forums, reading on their own etc, could be a very different path to focussing on being successful in scoring well in school exams. This is not implying that they will not be good at performing in such exams in the future, but that may not be their immediate goal.
      My guess is that someone who was very passionate about say, physics, and had the potential to win a Nobel prize in physics would be less likely to be focussed on trying to do well in their O or A levels and more likely to read and explore as much as possible about physics on their own. And in those developed countries that produce more Nobel laureates, the absence of the pressure and struggle to survive, the absence of a forced academic path, and the availability of resources are probably very important factors they do so.
      (4) So, a conducive environment and a lot of freedom, plus a nurturing of the path the individuals are inclined to take seem to be very important. I’m just an averagebum, so for peer-reviewed studies on this you would have to look up the relevant papers yourself.

    PAP has suffered none of the consequences of their authoritarian past (and present). The party and the system remains robust and monolithic.
    Many Singaporeans cite FEAR as the key consideration for their unwillingness to engage in political action, but that is only half of the equation.
    Chee Soon Juan is not wrong. Democracy is not for everyone, and not everyone wants democracy. Some societies and cultures, such as the Arab nations, eventually fall back to a default authoritarian mode, despite the promises of Arab Spring uprisings.
    After 57 years of uninterrupted one-party rule, I’m afraid Singapore has become such a country.
    Singaporeans do not really want a two or multi-party government. They do not trust the opposition or any non-PAP entity to run the country. What they want is a less elitist, less arrogant, more responsive and more liberal PAP to fix their trains, their lifts, their homes and their jobs.
    Yes, Singaporeans do want more opposition, but enough only to frighten the PAP to do better.

    22:55. we need to draw a very clear line between the well being of LGBTQ individuals, vs the demands and agenda pushed by LGBTQ ACTIVISM. As we have seen the chaos created by the LGBTQ Activists in the US, UK, Europe, Australia, we don’t want to invite the same social disturbances stirred up by Activists who began to demand more and more, until parents & the majority were forced to fight back aggressively. What is needed from both sides is, to strive for Peaceful co-existence through MUTUAL RESPECT. If gay couples want to get married, we give them our blessings. however our law should not allow married gay couples (trans, gay men, lesbians) to adopt children. Because no matter how hard they justify (freedom, democracy, love etc), children growing up with gay parents will surely be impacted with unusual challenges, mentally and emotionally. Please stop confusing the next generation. Spare a though for the innocent children. True love should not be selfish.
