Phew, Craig, that really was a labour of love! I'm really impressed by how you stuck to your original idea and made this hybrid work, even when you were told it couldn't be done. You really have created a buggy to be proud of! You say you're not an expert, but your doggedness and creativity puts you right up there in my opinion. Take it easy on the old girl but not too easy! I bet she will put a massive smile on your face when you run her! Top job matey, all the best and have a great Bank Holiday! Cheers! 🤩👌👍
Hey Mark, thank you for your awesome comment. I had a lot of support but I am proud that I kept going with it. The end result is an absolute stunner. I will bring in next time we get together but it isn’t running on the Sandy Bottom! All the best dude 👍🏻🙌🏻
Awesome Keith! Look forward to seeing those on the channel bud. Getting parts for this project was tough but once I kicked over to the Astute idea it became a bit easier. Let’s see how she goes out on the Orchard Raceway this year. It has drawn a tough first round though!
Awesome restauration Craig. From the first body it didn't looked like much, but after the disassembling the truth comes out. So many things to do, but you managed it perfect.
It was a mess Dirk! I was so upset at first but then an idea developed and here we are!! I had some great help on the way and the final model is awesome! Can’t wait to see it run! Thanks for watching dude 👍🏻🙌🏻
Hey Craig! That's was a great watch matey. As someone who loves vintage restorations I found this most interesting, and very relatable. That Caps obviously had a mad previous life, and has definitely seen many hours of use and abuse. You experienced exactly what I did on every rebuild regarding the brittle plastics- 25% of the plastics are broken, and another 25% break as you disassemble things..... and often a few more go as you reassemble everything! These rebuilds often become bottomless money pits, the further you go, the more the total costs spiral out of control..... but at the same time, the determination to not let it beat you increases! And, if a model has never been re released, just tracking down the required parts becomes a job in its own right..... thank god for ebay. These projects need to be done over many months, especially when you are hunting down parts/waiting for delivery. But, the more the challenge, the higher the reward /sense of achievement once finally completed. Those gearboxes /diffs on the madcap, original Astute and king cab/monster racer were renowned for problems right from the start. Some say this is why Tamiya never re released the madcap and king cab, and made substantial changes for the super astute. I've been hunting for a mint, totally original Astute with box for over 3 years now without joy..... and I'm willing to hand over decent money as well. Sadly, a re re is probably out of the question due to the super astute and the more recent TD2, which doesn't do anything for me. 😞 I will keep hunting. You done a great job there resurrecting that car, this resurrection was far more interesting than that bloody coronation this weekend..... Yawn, yawn! 🤣 Body turned out great, sometimes it's good to just let the creative juices flow! The pleasure of taking her round the O. R will be overwhelming after putting in so many hours of work to get her to that point. Well done Mr OAG! 🙏 👌 P. S Are you on what's app fella? If so, any chance you could privately email me your number? Got lots of cool photos of my latest rebuild, emails struggle sending more than a couple of photos. Wanted to give you a sneak preview as I'm currently still waiting for Taylor and moo moo to be available to get green hawks going again.... could be a while before I can get it up on the channel. Cheers dude! 😊 👍 👍 👍 👍
Hey dude, glad you enjoyed this monster build/restore! You are not wrong on the restores getting out of hand… this was one of those projects and still is!! Kol found me some drive cups this weekend and we are chatting about up grading the steering set up too! This will almost be a Super Astute in Madcap clothes soon 😂🤣 The TD2 is a freaking beast mate! Don’t overlook that chassis on the name. One of my favourite builds from the last 2 years and it drives so nicely! It’ll go well this year on the OR except it has ended up pitched against a classic in round one! (More on that next week) I’ll mail you dude 👍🏻
@@theoagrc A little teaser there as to pitching it up against a classic mate.... I've got a hunch as to what that could well be, looking forward to it mate! I haven't got anything against the TD2 chassis, or the TD4 for that matter.... just a little too modern for anything I would want in my personal collection bud. But, I've wanted the original Astute since it was released.... unfortunately there isn't many that have survived in mint condition with box etc..... but it's keeping the excitement levels up hunting for one. I will find one eventually! 🤞 👍 👍 👍 👍
Lovely build indeed! I love watching projects like these!😍👍 It inspires and fuels creativity and the need to continue, and finish dormant projects. I have hence issued a self-imposed restriction on buying any more cars, and instead focus on getting parts for the ongoing projects 😁🙃 Have a fantastic weekend!
Hey Toby, I think I am on a restore break now until next year! This one and the DF03 have been unbelievable projects which if I go back 2 years would have been well beyond me! I have another in the bank for next year and then I need to start thinking about future projects 🤔 Good luck with the back log dude 👍🏻🙌🏻
Hey 👋🏻 thank you so much for stopping by and checking out the build! It was such a great project but I need a break before trying another after this and the DF03 over the winter!! Should be a fun season out on the Orchard Raceway 😎 First round draw next week!!
It turned out looking amazing and it is a heck of a creation and you should be proud of it! Getting creative with RCs does often require a a large reserve of bits and pieces and usually multiple orders for other items! I am looking forward to seeing it run around and just take it easy on the old bits! All that time and effort, you don't want to sideline it right away! Take car Craig and I may have to steal that paint scheme off of you in the future!
Hey Addam, the paint scheme was a gamble that totally paid off! More than happy for you to take the OAG splatter as your own dude! The H.A.M will only ever be out on the Orchard Raceway where it will be driven hard but fairly! I have managed to gather a box of extras for repairs (albeit not the Astute parts!) and I am sure I will be able to limp her along no matter what! I think this is a contender though… wait to see who it is running against in round 1 on the OR next week though! 🔥 Thanks for watching brother 👍🏻🙌🏻
The reaction when you realized that the motor didn´t want to go 🤣😂 After all the struggle and broken parts i would say you did really good, it turned out nice. And i totally agree with you, can never have too many spareparts laying arround.
Hey Mattias, thanks dude! I loved it and it looks amazing on the shelf! The spare parts toolbox has been a life saver on so many projects but it is starting to get a little low now! Needs a restock 😂 Thanks for watching 👍🏻🙌🏻
Hey Jim, thanks man! I am so happy with how this turned out! Restoration projects are something I am keen to continue but the next one is a little easier and more relaxing I hope 😂 I had some awesome help along the way and the final buggy is something unique and hopefully in terms of performance somewhere between the two buggies. Not long until you see who it has drawn for round 1 on the OR! Thanks for watching mate 👍🏻🙌🏻

This one was an ultimate restore for me and I could have gone further but decided to keep it reasonable. Perhaps one day I will do one better but we’ll see what we find next! Thanks for watching along pal 👍🏻🙌🏻
Looks great Craig...I have good Madcap chassis, but if I didn't I would have done the same conversion. There are definitely challenges but so worth it...I love how my modified Madcap came out, and it is a blast to drive! Another good video!
Hey dude! I enjoyed your videos while I was going through the restore. At the time I was very jealous of the condition of your chassis but now I am finished my hybrid I am glad I had to go through the pain! Thanks for watching pal 👍🏻🙌🏻
@@theoagrc I have been very lucky recently, finding some old RCs in good condition. But I have definitely bought my share of beat up junk too. I really do enjoy bringing old ones back to life, otherwise they just end up as more plastic sitting in a landfill.
Dude, AFJ!!!!!! I was gonna say, Sand Viper wheels should fit. Man someone cranked the shit out of those diff halves, WOW!!!! I seen aluminum bend but to warp, that's over torqued or got way too hot, maybe both... The slop now in your diff is the dog bones, the outdrives having all that extra room for the pin to move more makes it feel & look like slop... I think that's the same diff in the King Cab, Thorp made parts for that, maybe that's an option.. Well, It came out great looking, love the bubble gum paint work!!!

I don’t understand why sone people said guy couldn’t do it though. Also for bracing the front have you considered using the super astute G parts as the super astute had a brace to that bolted on to the front bulkhead , unless you’ve now used different parts so it wouldn’t work ? Don’t see why not. Anyway a cracking result
Hey Andy, thanks for watching matey and taking time to comment dude. This was a heck of a project but one I am super happy with!
