  • In this video I demonstrate how to properly adjust the Parking Brake on a Honda Goldwing DCT model to prevent unwanted rolling on inclines. A runaway motorcycle could lead to thousands of dollars in unwanted damages and repairs.

    Chris, thanks for making such a clear and complete video! How do you know if the "Brake Pad" for the parking brake needs to be replaced? If it does, how do yo do it?

    On a side note... don't cut the rubber boot, it slides out of the way to the right exposing the cable adjustment nuts etc. Pull the boot to the right towards the cable clamp. You can then make adjustments, and slide it to the left when you're done. Good video, I always like watching someone do the work first so I don't have to look it up in the manual.

    Yes Chris I went through all the issues you highlighted in this video and used the exact same repairs. Just one lesson learned on the EC disconnect instal. Many opportunities to stop and beat my head against the wall on this installation as in my case the instructions were not as helpful as an install video which was not available from EC. Also I did the installation on a weekend and no EC help on phone.
    1. Finding the kickstand interface connector location is/was a reach. It's located under the engine in the middle of the engine case. Took me forever even using the diagrams in the shop manual. Half the install is available in one of Fred Harmon's videos but it's for EC's lesser harness the only provides a lighted warning, but the main connections are the same, but you will need to work through the rest. Difficulty is large hands, preventing access to the rest of fitting the harness.
    Suggestion. Call EC and have them walk yiu through the process I believe that will help. A video of this installation will likely be the fist and only and surely will benefit your viewers. I'm not a videographer and wish now I had at least tried to document the install. Just a few lessons learned Chris. 👍🏼

      To be honest when it comes to parking on a steep incline, I trust my manual transmission more because with a manual transmission the motorcycle will not accidently roll if you leave the bike in gear when the bike is powered off. With the DCT parked on an steep incline the parking brake must be in good working condition and fully engaged otherwise you may have a runaway motorcycle while parked in neutral, I guess old habits are hard to break LOL.

    Mine definitely needs adjustment. Not sure why the dealer lets them roll off the showroom with this not checked. However, they have probably all seen a few that are smoked from leaving the brake set, even though there is the light in the dash. On a side note, max or electrical connection makes something that will not let the bike into drive without it being released, like the side stand. Thanks Chris, very informative and detailed.

      just got mine in 2023....not used to having a parking brake, more than once I have ridden off with the parking brake engaged. now it doesnt hold at all so am hoping its a simple adjustment, as it wasnt that great to begin with. With regards to the adjustment turnbuckle, why not unbolt the clamp from the alternator and slide the boot off the turnbuckle?

    • @caseyberry8190
      @caseyberry8190 3 месяца назад

      It happens, riding off with the park brake set. Just keep an eye on the dash when starting the ride for that red park light, I know easier said than done. Sometimes I forget to close that right side glove box door after opening the fuel door. Parking brake adjustment is fairly easy. The procedure is in the manual, Chris also has an excellent video on it.

    Quick question: Not sure if you or your viewers ever ran into this?
    I have a 2023 wing DCT tour.
    I want to take the topbox/trunk off and put the chrome piece with led that would be on top and move to the bottom in p[lace of the top box.
    But Honda dealership here saying Honda ONLY has the kit up to 2021 ?
    Wondering if you have exp using the 2021 kit to take off the top box for 2023, etc...?

    I was unaware that when you adjust the set screw on the parking brake caliber to a “slight drag” on the wheel that , that meant the rear wheel should not turn. So I am assuming the rear wheel should not turn by hand when the parking hand brake is clicked to the first click?

    • @chriscaliente5033
      @chriscaliente5033  Год назад

      As I stated in the beginning at 1:35, the Honda Goldwing Service Manual states that the Standard Clicks are between 3 and 5 clicks. If there are any discrepancies feel free to pay your local Honda Dealership.

    • @overboost7667
      @overboost7667 Год назад

      That seems to be the way to do. 1 click on the handbrake, wheel drags lightly. Then you should be in the ballpark of 3-5 clicks for a fully and securely clamped rear wheel.

    Hey my boy Chris!
    Does Honda ever explain why they want you to tighten up the parking brake cable up front first?
    When I got my 2023 wing the parking brake would barely hold the bike. I went straight to the back wheel first.
    All I did was put the bike on the center stand, pull the parking brake handle up one click then loosten the lock nub at the back parking brake and turned the long screw until a light drag was felt.
    Then i released the parking brake to check for no dragging. Tightened up the locking nut and was done. Bike fully locks the back tire at 3 clicks.
    My guess is that Honda wants you to do it this way to see if you still have pad life left before adjusting it?

    • @chriscaliente5033
      @chriscaliente5033  Год назад

      The information that I’m referencing is coming my straight from the Honda Goldwing Service Manual section pages (3-21 to 3-23), I’m only stating what the books is saying.

    • @alp3781
      @alp3781 Год назад

      Yes, You need to check your cable first!!! Mine was off too by around 7mm. make sure you use the correct metric wrench cause you will finish with the locking nut on the cable adjustor. Its a soft nut.

      When i picked up my 22 the parking brake had no bind on it at all. it took me 30 seconds to adjust it to where it won't move at all but i did it at the back wheel. If you have an older bike that you may have stretched the cable a little then do it the way you see here. if it's new its not stretched just mal ajusted in which case try doing it from the rear wheel instad its so much simpler.

  • @caseyberry8190

    Maybe one more comment! The only problem I ever forsee with the goldwings mechanical lever in a place where the world to see is 1. A child not being watched pulling on it and releasing it when you are parked somewhere, or 2, a mean ass kid or adult douche bag that just walks up and sees something to grab, what do they typically do? They pull on it and say I wonder what this does or is for. For that reason I kind of wished honda would have put an electronic switch on it to only unlock when the ignition is on like all other electric parking brakes! Any wheel chock of value would take up valuable space (aside from Chris's trailer,) but I wonder about some sort of strap that could be rolled up when not in use but could be attached to a wheel or something for extra security.
