Thanks Eric! Thanks for saying what is in our hearts. I have been banging on stuff since I was a small child. That joy of expression stays with me to this day, at 66. Your comments on how underappreciated we are was right on, man. We are the last piece hired in a band, the first to go when times are tough. Everybody loves the sound, no one wants another mouth in the band to feed. And you know what? I wouldn't change A THING! It is who I am, down to my center of being. Peace and Love, Brother. Namaste.

Once again, My Grandson, you have done it. This is a very powerful video. Just like the linemen on a football team makes running backs and Quarter backs great, the percussionist makes a band/orchestra/group great. I agree that percussionists usually do not get bows and accolades, unless they are truly featured and sometimes they are, particularly, set drummers. But the true percussionist is often overlooked. I remember watching a documentary showing many different movie scenes with and without the accompanying music tracks. The difference was dramatic. How the music dramatically showcased the emotions, danger, excitement, etc. in a movie scene became so readily apparent. I am sure one could do the same thing with a band/orchestra or musical group---listen to a track before the percussion is removed and then listen to the same track minus the percussion. There will be a loss of the feeling in the music. Clavas, bongos, maraccas, guidos, tambourines, woodblocks, cowbells, and yes, Congas, are all the percussionists keyboard. They may seem to be simple instruments, and can be struck, stroked, shaken by nearly everyone, but just like the keys on a piano, it takes great talent and an innate rhythm and timing to use those instruments in a way that brings so much life to the music and actually helps other musicians in the group to more truly feel the rhythm, tempo and beat of the music.
There is no less time and devotion to practice, studying music theory, rhythm patterns, and learning the proper way to play each of the percussionists instruments than for a trumpet, saxophone, guitar, piano, etc. etc. player. Learning to do what would appear to be a relatively simple technique on the Congas, a "slap" can sometimes take months of hitting the conga drums and it has to be learned with both hands. Then there are how many different rhythm patterns to be learned? Where are the other percussionist instruments properly introduced into a song and how hard, soft, and in what style or method are they to be used? The list grows and grows.
I think Eric has brought forward something, that not just the general public should understand, but perhaps other musicians as well. I don't think a lot of musicians appreciate the time and talent involved in learning to be as good a percussionist as they are with their individual instruments.
Longs story short. I agree with Eric and perhaps it is time for all of us who love music, to think about and appreciate all the time, study, practice and expense of becoming a great musician and that we include percussionists in the definition of musician for they no less deserve that title. Thanks, Eric. I personally am grateful that you made this video and you did a wonderful job of putting it together. God bless.

Inspirational video.I've been playing drumset and percussion for 51 years. Most percussionists are very good at what they do,but only a handful are really versatile. Typically we get caught up in one or two genres, and that's it.That makes are music careers even more competitive, and sometimes limited. Best advice I can give from my life experiences is for hand percussionists to learn drumset, and for drumset artists to learn some hand percussion. Also to get proficient on at least three genres of music on each.

My technique has improved from your excellent videos which demonstrate your gifted abilities as a performer and teacher. But this particular video comes at a time where the world is shaken and distraught and a semblance of perspective is needed. I have always believed that percussionists are the heartbeat of music and music is the the pulse of life. Thank you for sharing that message and your God-given talents with the rest of us.

This really resonates with me. Some years back I wrote a blog called The Dumb Drum Guy. My original intention was to push back against the neverending cascade of hearing, "Hey, nice bongos" even though the drum in question was a djembe or timbao, and also towards being referred to as "auxiliary" even though my role in the band was anything but. The Dumb Drum Guy was not a persona. It was a rhetorical move that I hoped might enlighten and entertain. I wrote about specific moments of experiencing the type of marginalization you are referring to. One of them was titled, Yes, It's True--One Time I Got Shot at for Playing Drums. In time, my readers had turned it into a persona and I walked away. Anyway, it's nice to see others articulating this frustration, and I imagine there are many of us who have commented here who have landed in awkward situations with self-proclaimed singer/songwriter/guitarists. We might have been paid, but we sure were glad when the gig was over!

Very moving - as a kid some of my most enjoyable and creative moments happened as I explored and made up rhythms on household items. I didn’t realize at the time that this was valid and creative - it just seemed interesting and fun to me. It was dismissed and discouraged by my parents and teachers. It reminds me to appreciate and encourage real talent in kids - even when it happens at times that are inconvenient for me. Wish my family and teachers would have encouraged the interest, but glad to have found my way now even in my mid 50s!

Been following you for a while (different account) and have learned much. Last time that I had a real teacher was over 13yrs ago, cool dude in local salsa outfit in VA. I play only for myself, especially when most alone, and have been for many years. I kinda break the stereotype in a LOT of ways, and maybe thats what keeps me isolated. I have always been abused for my freestyle bongo conga drumming in school & that just wasn't fair for me nor my friend JK who also plays bongos & congas plus he got me into it & glad he did! Those bullies never stopped me for doing what I love most! Eric thank you for your inspiring words for I am proud to also say that I am a percussionist with my own style of playing that will amaze you for I am self taught & looooove creating my own rhythms plus I have double jointed fingers & small hands & all the time stink kids saying now your hands are too small & having double joined fingers will cause you to be a bad conga bongo drummer! You are not suppose to make up your own rhythms for you are a baby baby baby they sang you are a baby just bang on your baby drum & I thought mmmmm they are jealous of me for that is your issue not mine so just say what you keep on saying but my hands are non stop once I get playing! Inspite of having small hands my double joined fingers make playing bongos & congas more creative with techniques since my fingers move all the way back crazy but my style is me & no matter what anyone says I will keep drumming for God & my enjoyment!

What a great piece of work! It is all so true. We are often seen by the world and even fellow musicians as troglodytes pounding on our drums. However, very few know that a conguero needs every bit as much discipline, commitment and nuanced approach as say a violinist. I forget who exactly said it, but, a member of irakere said “most don’t realize that people study the technique of Changuito like Violin”. Above all else, like you alluded to; it is the embodiment of a triumph of the human spirit and music over hundreds of years of ruthless, despotic tyranny and colonial imperialism.
