I feel like this has less in common with a traditionally popular sport like baseball or soccer, and is more akin to something like formula 1 or even Olympic marathons. Most of the victories are earned outside of the track/event itself - reaching the finish line is not a sudden burst of superior skill but instead the culmination of days worth of effort and research.. I have never played WoW before but I could see myself checking every morning to see how teams/guilds are performing.

I think video games are an excellent reason why there are so many people wanting to get into programming and coding. Because in a world first race if you are able to create a program that trivializes a hard challenge in the video game then you increase your shot of becoming the victor. Likewise programs have so many other uses for QOL features, most of which are usually highlighted to players for the first time in video games.

I'm pretty sure Limit's Maximum made himself the 21st man in the previous raid to the one you mentioned, Eternal Palace, which Method still won. Method's raidleader Scripe even acknowledged it was the future and stated immediately after the race that it was highly likely to be the last raid he would feature in as a player. Right now, the community is going through a HUGE conflict over whether or not the game is suitable to be competitive. There's actually arguments happening regularly and a huge push for the game to go casual and give up on competition, to the point where there's an active stigma and overwhelming hate between most casual players for competitive players.

I am actually kinda impressed at the production levels taken for the World First raiding in WoW. It's quite spectacular to see.
As a FFXIV player who does not do world first raiding but can play and clear a lot of the content, it's interesting to see the world first dynamic on another MMO. FFXIV will never really get to that level of viewership on it's Savage content since that World First race is generally done in 24hrs, but the Ultimate tier content is usually a one week affair - so it may be eligible for that level of - for lack of better words - hype.
I know some WoW players have started to try World First raiding on FFXIV and have been successful at doing week 1 clears but aren't at the same tier as the current World First raiders of FFXIV. I am now curious if they plan to continue that trend into the Ultimate tier that is coming out in April. I guess time will tell.
I like the dynamic of WoW enabling the "21st player" as that was something that happened on FFXIV as well - where the world first raid team was actually a 8-player team with two support players who coached and assisted the the actual raiders with out of game support. It makes me wonder which game's raid community came up with the idea first now. May need to do some history hunting for that.
I haven't done any WoW raiding since the days of BC, so the raids in WoW look really crazy compared to that. It's kinda eye opening.
As always, thank you for the content :)

I feel like Speedruning Should be a more common esport. Especially with open world titles. It could be
    Bingo boards (See Smallant)
    Specific challenges (See amazing chest)
or just flat out head to head races.
This is especially true in communities where players will purposefully handicap themselves like Pokemon and my own favorite franchise, dark souls
the potential that speedrunning has in esports is second to none. Plus imagine a community where its literally impossible for toxicity to sprout AND you can learn and get into it on your own pace without having to worry about your internet, location, if you have a mic, or anything.

The only reason they haven't put it on is because they don't know how to make it work. They jumped the gun with MDI Mythic+ even tho they had RWF for years. One of the couple of organic competitions that Blizzard games ever had (since they "forced" esports on the last 3 esports they published (HotS, Overwatch, hearthstone)).
They know they can't make it possible to market something like RWF like other esports that are just teams of 5 (we are talking about guilds with 40 ppl in) so they just don't touch it.
BUT, not only they don't touch it, but they make it worse. HOW CAN IT BE POSSIBLE for a race to world first not have everyone start at the SAME TIME ? Some regions don't even start on the same day. Disgusting that a competition like that struggles to exist, from developers that cater the game 100% on raiding for the absolute 1% on mythic (with restrictions and all) to be so absolute idiots and don't give them a fair competition. But what can someone expect from blizzard.

To me it is like speed-running where addons are like glitches. They may look like cheating, but are hard to execute in a race so they end up adding to the skills needed to perform at top level instead of lowering them Also, since it is a team endeavor in the first place, having a out-of-game raid leader and addon makers is just the natural progression of it. As far as rules go, I believe it should remain free of them as long as it can (besides the rules already set in place by Blizzard concerning exploits). There are too many eyes on it now to be cheated in my opinion.

To become an Esport you need :
    Fans, money and players.
    Fans:
Watching PVE raiding rn is...a slog. A 20 h raid necessarily means that even its fans don't watch the whole thing. Most would tune out and only watch the results and the highlight reels because they need to work.
And since there's no interaction with their direct competition, there's no direct rivalry or human interest stories. Verdict: can be improved.
Money: Money is easy to obtain once investors are assured of a return on investment. From a business standpoint there's several factors that limit its profitability. 20men rosters are monstrously expensive on an e-sport salary. The fact that most viewers won't watch the whole thing but only tune in for the winning game means that your ads are 99% useless. You can solve this by placing your brand constantly on the screen like in F1 or football but the players in-game screen is already full of DMG tables and spreadsheets which are already limiting the spectacle factor. They could maybe do like motor sports who are more about showcasing the carmaker's engineering ability and potentially involve the American Army showcasing their strategy??? Or maybe not. They'd rather have more realistic scenarios. Finally there's the issue of security. And whenever your opponents know exactly what you're doing the only way to compete is skill and ressources and since we already rules out skill then anybody with a bigger paycheck could swoop in and pay their way to the top. Verdict: problematic in current format.
Players: we already said that dedicating 16h per day is unhealthy. We already said that much of WOW is RNG and Pay to Win. These are terrible for a pro player but not deal breakers. We already said that the most important player doesn't play the game... because he's not distracted by the game. This means that Blizzard is less interested in sponsoring it. But that also means that players could be replaced by remote controlled bots directly controlled by the general... essentially turning it into SC2. Now this would actually get Harvard, MIT, Google, IBM and Huawei frothing and I could totally see a team of coders racing to see who could replace humans faster and showcase their coding, software and hardware skills behind a single very well paid General. Heck, the absence of rules, the America centric advantage of first release, the heavy use of automated scripts, the ungodly mind numbing repetitive hours would all be advantageous for machines. And it would be fun to see a man Vs machine event.
Verdict: Terrible for players, amazing for machines

One of the (many, MANY) problems WoW has right now is that Blizzard has tried to turn everything into a competition, from dungeons to pvp to see who can clear a raid first, which I've always seen as kind of ridiculous and forced for an MMO. Since many players see this as ultra competitive content, it breeds toxicity, elitism, and a bunch of other problems too long to detail here. The game has dumb RNG drops, timegated progression, unbalanced and not equalized pvp, you can buy content carries with real money sold by Blizzard itself in the form of a token making the game effectively pay to win. These are just some examples that, in my opinion, makes WoW unfit to be considered a healthy (or even viable) esport. You could even turn solitaire into an esport if you want, but should you? And let's not get into the mess of a story it has, it's just not a very good product anymore.

in 17 years of playing wow, I have never met a single individual that I was aware was passionate about the race to world first. I remember caring about ranking across the server but never anybody caring about who was first in the world outside of a neat footnote.

    The real question is:
    If they're already using scripts,
in a low skill sport, where humans are failing because they're not designed to play repetitive tasks for long hours and the environment is uniform and predictable...
Why aren't they using Bots instead of players?

it breaks human interest, (the real reward is viewership, not the actual first kill)

WoW E - Sports outside of Arena wont take off cause of Add-ons. The average person watching the raid they wouldnt be able to sit back and enjoy what is happening. And it gets way more confusing when top players have their own custom add-ons that the average person wouldnt be able to download from a 3rd Party Site. The barrier to entry is way to high for WoW and the pay off isnt worth it nor exciting to even watch.
