  • David Rubenstein speaks with Philippe Laffont, founder of the roughly $50 billion technology-focused hedge fund Coatue Management. After moving to the US from France as a teenager, Laffont fell in love with the American spirit. After cutting his teeth under Julian Robertson's tutelage at Tiger Management, Laffont struck out on his own and founded Coatue at the height of the dotcom boom in 2000. In this "Bloomberg Wealth" interview, Laffont talks openly about his belief in AI as the innovation engine for the future of technology investing. This interview was recorded June 25 in New York at the Bloomberg Invest Summit.

Great video. I have a quick question. I am an aspiring trader, I am looking study some traders and earn off their expertise rather than investing myself and lose money emotionally. Whats your take on copy trading? Do people really make money? Just looking for some reassurance

Focus on long term investments in property, stocks, and bonds. Avoid copying, daytrading and 'chart astrology'. Diversify across different geographies, industries, and value chain stages - to reduce your risk. You can do this with ETFs, or by selecting different stocks yourself. This is the best way to invest for more than 90% of people

Thank you for this tip. It was easy to find your coach. Did my due diligence on her before emailing her. She seems proficient considering her resume.

Invest in the financial markets before retiring by diversifying across assets, allocating a small portion of your portfolio, staying updated on market trends, and considering long-term holding to balance risk and growth.

People dont understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. The increments dont match our income, yet certain investors still earn over $365,000 in stocks and assets. Wish I could accomplish that.

Very possible! especially at this moment. Profits can be made in many different ways, but such intricate transactions should only be handled by seasoned market professionals.

Some persons think inves'tin is all about buying stocks; I think going into the stock market without a good experience is a big risk, that's why I'm lucky to have seen someone like mr Brian C Nelson.

Maybe the best question ever asked by David Rubenstein, "Is that a real or fake French accent?" The response was even better, "there was a time when the accent helped, but now I am married with six kids so the accent doesn't help anymore."

Coatue invested in Databricks too. In December '23, two Databricks founders and one board member each amassed $32M by selling their shares at $65/share price. That share price assumes the 2021 multiples since its valuation hasn't been impacted by the post-zerp era. Quite a standout exceptional company, don't you think?
