The Band kicks all buttocks, and so does Hailey Niswanger whose soprano saxophone leaves no notes untouched. I am persuaded, by her virtuosic delivery, that Mr. Wayne Shorter is very proud of her. Sam Newsome will be, too. 'Trane would have been as overjoyed as I am. Nice performance.
1974 actually. Best-selling album in the US that year. Yeah, u guess that unless one is a SERIOUSLY connected jazz player and about same age as Harvey, just about EVERYONE heard this fantastically versatile, and often funkier-than-funky rhythm machine for the first time in hearing the headhunters album. It's no exaggeration to say that that track ALONE changed my life! (For the better, I hope.) Not only that, but if I were allowed JUST ONE TRACK to listen to forevermore on some desert island then it would DEFINITELY be that original album version of Chameleon!!
The first time I really was blown away with Harvey Mason playing was when I heard him on Herbie Hancock 1974 album Headhunters, a very amazing album 😎
At 2:20 after the big glissando from the pianist you can see the stink-eye from the bassist and he clearly says “don’t do that”
That sax solo was the shit! don’t know who she is but she knows how to elevate a vibe to another level, well played.
sax player sent me into orbit. almost left my body wow! Coltrane and Wayne must be pleased with her!
Jetro Da Silva is wild! The amount of energy that this man trasmits through his playing is unbelievable.
