3M certainly has a well-deserved reputation for high quality; overall results: 13:27 I'm really impressed that 3M Cubitron was the only brand which was hardly degraded at all by sanding on metal for 2 minutes: 13:16 True fact: I have a lot of 8" diskettes, with data on them, which I would love to recover. But the _ONLY_ brand which is still usable, 1/3 century later, is 3M. The other brands all self-destruct in the diskette drive, because the adhesive which sticks the oxide recording layer to the substrate has degraded, and the oxide comes off when the head rubs it. (Unfortunately, the data I want is on the other brand diskettes, mostly BASF and Wabash -- if anyone knows a way to read those diskettes, please contact me.)
@@ProjectFarm I will ask a bit of a counter-question. So if you are looking at maximum removal, this test is perfect. The good performance of removing materials from some of the brands might also suggest that the grain size could be larger or rougher than on the lower performing brands, i.e. different production standards/quality. So if one brands 120-grit is actually a 125 grit, it of course should outperform another brand which have their 115-grit labelled as 120 grit. It would be interesting to see the performance between papers from different batches, to see if the quality is consistent between different manufacturing runs. Other times you might be looking for the best finish including (or the lack of) circular scratches, lesser risk of burning the materials, degrading between center and outer edges (leading back to finish quality) and etcetera. This might be a bit extreme lengths, but I think that this test could be worth revisiting with different criteria to test. All cheers for an awesome channel!
I'm not going to ignore the fact that you spent over 7 1/2 hours holding a sander just so I can make informed buying decisions for my home improvement consumables. Thanks to you for devoting so much effort into these test. Also, thanks to your shop vac filter that had to clean up that sanding dust.
Ha Ha! You’re so right man. These manufacturers can only ride their name and reputation for so long, and then PF comes along and throws a literal wrench into the equation.
@@ProjectFarm The only person to really test the products that people use and spend money on repeatedly, great to see someone testing which is best for your wallet and top performer. I know one thing I'm buying my buddy with this stimulus payment. He's been furloughed through this pandemic and has turned to woodworking to pass time, but buys cheap sandpaper. I saw him go through an entire pack of [redacted]-brand sandpaper sanding maybe 75% of a chair he had built. I'd love to see his face when he can sand an entire picnic table with one sheet of Cubitron (or two sheets; I'm generous). Top-notch content as always. The prep work, the tests themselves, the microscopic views, the editing, the personality, humor, and award-winning smile deserve millions more subscribers.

@@ProjectFarm The McKesson Nitrile 911 exam gloves are the ones we used when I was an EMT, they were very durable, pretty thick, I've used them framing houses and had some last all day
I've always enjoyed PF videos, but I just realized one more thing I think makes the channel great: you can tell he has the real life experience of using these products in daily life by the tests he chooses. He knows to test paint removal and clogging for sandpaper because he's done it in real life. He tests chainsaw sharpeners after dulling the chain in the dirt because he's done it in real life. An authentic guy like us trying to figure out the best product, not another talking head shill unboxing or "review" that's nothing more than regurgitating the marketing wank.
Incredible amount of work went into this! Just the testing alone without the planning, getting the materials together, compiling the results or editing took hours! Such commitment.
My only criticism of the first test was immediately resolved, when you continued to test each sheet incrementally, up to 25 minutes (I thought you were going to stop testing at five minutes). You were very thorough, and did a great job of showing the side by side comparisons. You're the best in the business, and I recommend your videos to everyone who buys tools.
I can't tell you the amount of times I've used your reviews on deciding what to spend my money on. You are the best real use reviewer on YT! Thank you for all the hard work and time you put into your videos.
3m invented modern sandpaper back in the early 1900s. They started as a mining company but it was the invention and production of sandpaper that made them take off. Their name is on everything these days and they are one of the largest companies in the world because of sandpaper. "Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing", 3M. The "sand" on sand paper is a mining by-product.
@@1pcfred 3M wet diamond grit was what I use to use to get my snowboard, and skis ready for ski season, it was the only paper I found that would remove last seasons old wax, without gumming the paper up too bad. start at Blue 1200, and work my way up to pale green 8000, for the smoothest surface I could get, and then 3 coats of Mr Zogs SexWax
Great test. Based on your results, I would say if you're an occasional user, go with the 3M. Spending the extra money for occasional use will not hurt you, and your sandpaper will last the longest. If you're a contractor or go through tons and tons of sandpaper on a regular basis, go with the regular Diablo brand. 90% of the performance at half the cost. Big cost savings over time.
Sand net lasts significantly longer than the regular Diablo and it can be cleaned & reused. HD regularly runs hefty sales on 50 packs w/5 different grits. Sand net is a much better value than the Diablo.
Depends, if your paying for the sandpaper and also getting paid by the hour to sand diablo all the way. If your paying for the sandpaper and paying your guys by the hour to sand the 3M removed 32% more material in 25min. If the job is done in 40min vs 60min the extra $1 on sand paper is of little consequence.
@@BYOTools the 3M is awesome. Amazon has a package of 15 for $5. Three each of grits 80, 120, 150, 180, and 220. You won’t be disappointed. Just make sure it’s hook and loop or sticky. A buddy of mine ordered the wrong kind for his. Also love your videos as well. Keep up the good work.

Oh I can’t remember the RUclipsr, but they run a channel attempting to reveal how much popular RUclipsrs make. And if I remember correctly he was trying to show that ProjectFarm was in it for the money... I say who cares, the man ought to be rich off such good work!
I love the way you visualized the data in the charts on this episode. The average placement was a smart way to accumulate and display the results over multiple tests. Thanks!
Your tests are always well thought out, and you videos allow people to see exactly what your results you get. You have to be the most trustworthy unbiased guy on RUclips.
The amount of work you put into these tests is incredible. Nearly every item in my tool shed has been purchased with your recommendations. Keep up the good work!
This is one I've been hoping for. I buy name brands like 3M and Norton when it comes to sandpaper. I guess I have to try out some Diablo stuff next time. EXCELLENT test procedures and interesting results. Todd is the MAN! Thank you so much!
After sanding tables for hours and hours at my last job, I can say with certainty that the quality of one brand can drastically change between grits. Some brands that are great at 120 are absolutely rubbish at anything over 800 and vice-versa. I would love to see a breakdown at each major grit between all these brands.
As a painter/handyman I take pride on the work/service I provide, having people like this guy taking out the guessing part on buying tools and materials is priceless, it’s much more fun watching videos like this or just taking on an other project, keep up the good work.
I've always thought Diablo products were the best bang for the buck but I didn't realize that some of their products are actually the best product not just the best value. Their saw blades are the only ones I run anymore. Also I really appreciate that you've basically become "Consumer Reports" for us blue collar folks who work with our hands.
this is what consumer reports was supposed to be until they became a corporate shill. i hope this guy doesn't sell out i bought many products based on his videos. The only one i would really disagree with so far is the double sided tape, the 3m vhb tape is far superior to anything else that exists. i bought all three top products and 2 failed where the 3m stuff worked as expected (taping various things to bottom of my desk)
I will happily flip out when I see a product in a store with the Project Farm Approved star/gear cog on it. You deserve it Todd & family, awesome content as always!
Love your videos, keep up the great work. As a finishing carpenter …. I have switched to autobody sandpaper as they outperform standard consumer brands. They don’t clog, sand better and last way longer .
I had a feeling that 3M and Diablo would top the charts. Which is great! I'm surprised that Dewalt / Makita / Bosch were all so marginal, figured they would've ranked a little better.

Yeah, I've worked with DuraGold and 3m sandpaper at my old job doing paint correction on cars. 3m was by far the best. We ended up chunking all of the DuraGold sandpaper in the trash lol. It just doesn't perform as well. And is more time consuming to get the job done. And time is vital in a production facility.
I do a whole lot of hand sanding and finishing on high carbon steel. I’ve always trusted rhino wet redline from indasa USA. Sucks to see you didn’t test it, I’ve found it better than any brand you’d find in a hardware store. Though in fairness not many stores carry it, and it’s mostly sold online. Great video none the less.
My dad was engineering manager for one of the norton plants in texas and designed the assembly line machines. It and 3M were top brands. Then they were bought by a french company and switched to some other company's machines, got rid of the engineers and the quality went down.
Amazing selection of branded sand papers. I really like that recently you included brands we can also get in the EU/UK. Older videos seemed to be based more around US available tools, and perhaps in the last 6 months/last year i found that your selection included these other brands too. It is very useful to see these as they are directly applicable to our countries too. Top job as always!
easily one of my favorite channels. no BS intro or talking in the beginning. just straight testing and facts. you can tell the videos are well rehearsed...no stumbling over sentences 'umm...umm...kinda this kinda that'. very well done!
Awesome Job! The only thing I can think of to add would be a ranking of total grams removed per cost. Using the grams removed after 25 Minutes for price per gram removed Makitoyo $0.005 Diablo $0.009 Tigershark $0.010 Dura Gold $0.012 Norton $0.013 Mirka $0.014 3m $0.016 Bosch $0.017 Dewalt $0.020 Makita $0.026 sandnet $0.029
Yeah, If I'm interpreting you correctly. Even though the 3M was the better performer, you could change the Makitoyo to a new sheet 2 more times to get new sanding speed and still be cheaper than the 3M. The Diablo however, is the real competition, it sanded, stayed clean, and stayed sharp. It definitely made the Makitoyo less useful.
Dude you are a life saver for all of us not sure what product to purchase. I always watch your videos now so I can make an informed decision and quite often I find myself telling others to look you up on RUclips. Keep it up man.
WOW, you never cease to amaze us with your scientific results. And expose a lot of marketing hype from some major companies. Thanks again for your efforts and take care!
Now imagine the turmoil at the DeWalt and Makita HQ after this episode and a marketing brain storm how to justify yet again their sky-high prices for such a poor performsmce... lol - marketing managers there are going to have some sleepless nights
After the initial testing I was like "only 5 minutes? Is Project Farm slacking?"... Oh was I WRONG!!! This went above and beyond my imagination for testing sandpaper. VERY impressive!!! 👍👍👍 NEVER again will I doubt thee.
GREAT test! GREAT info! It's no surprise that 3M came out at the top. Their abrasives have always been top notch. When I recently upgraded my sanding to a good random orbital sander, I bought an assortment of Diablo discs to get started, expecting to get "better" discs in a few days. I may just stick with Diablo after viewing this. To me, price vs. durability has long been the criteria for choosing sandpaper. Well done!
Thank you Tod, I believe if there was no RUclips you would do these test to help out your local folks and friends. So count me as one of them along side fellow RUclips subcribers.
Love this and I’m so glad I discovered your channel! I’m really surprised you don’t have a test of the sanders themselves though! That’d be interesting to see evenness and how effective they are at capturing dust!
Awesome video and very helpful. For me it's quite timely too, as I'm in the middle of a massive sanding job and sure enough, I'm using one of the brands tested here. This is excellent information!
Would've loved to see the Mirka Abranet included in this, that's what we always had at auto body shops in Canada and my workshop is fully stocked with it. But I only buy it out of habit, not because it's necessarily the "best". Having said that, this was a REALLY inclusive video, I'm impressed
I cannot thank you enough for your incredible work and valued added videos. I cancelled my subscription to Consumer Reports and won't buy anything you have not recommend. As a Nuclear Reactor Operator I greatly appreciate your attention to detail and well thought out engineering tests. And you are always happy about what you are doing. God Bless👍
One of the greatest channels ever... Is it possible for you to test three tools brands (Skil, Bauer and Craftsman) for the main tools a DIY'er may need? (Circular saw, recip saw, impact wrench, and drill) This may be so useful to decide for a wireless tool set. Also try Hercules, Kobalt and Ryobi. Such excellent work should be shared everywhere!!! Thanks!!
It is an interesting idea to average performance across multiple tools in a family, since you're not buying into any one tool line as much as you're buying into a battery family. When you move beyond the basics the tool selection varies a lot. Personally, I have DeWalt for most of the big stuff (and I love their hedge trimmer) but I *had* to have the little Milwaukee M12 ratchet and have added a couple pieces to that. Then there's the Dremel, the 60V Ryobi mower...I got myself a wall of chargers. Then there's the Harbor Freight Bauer stuff I keep at a rental place at the other end of the state for light repairs - nowhere near as strong as the others but the value proposition was right for how and when it gets used, and the batteries are cheap.
Maybe with all the fuss yesterday thanks to Flex introduction through a glorified ad disguised as unbiased tests, you should try to test the usual tools from Flex against Milwaukee and Dewalt to set an end to such discussion. It will receive a lot of views for sure, but please don't forget my initial suggestion about testing Skil, Bauer and Craftsman, and Kobalt, Hercules and Ryobi... For starters, deciding the battery platform is a must. For professionals, a face off with Flex, Milwaukee, Dewalt and Metabo or Makita will be eye opening!!! Thanks and keep doing such an amazing work!!!
I've wondered for years if my dad was throwing away money buying 3M sandpaper and products. I guess i'm going to have to eat my words and tell him what a great product it really is. But I guess he already knows lol.
A disc that lasts 20 percent longer and costs 250 percent more, is a conundrum for me. On one hand, it might save a Theoretical hour and a half per day. However, the reality is maybe 20 minutes . The paper savings is an questionable. I am a guy who walked into an automobile paint supply for a few sheets of sandpaper, post spraying primer, and saw a bill for $55. Back in the 90s I used a fast drying patch, lots of hugh quality oil spray of doors, and would spend 70 dollars for 1 or 2 rooms on sandpaper. So, I don't take the cost of sandpaper lightly. I went through hundreds of sheets on a few hundred feet of railing and backing 2 by 4 for strip and restaining, refinish. I routinely buy hundreds of 7 inch 24 grit grinder discs. I assure you that at 90 cents a resin backed disc beats a $5 3m disc every time. In this video, the diablo 36 cent disc (they are actually 20 cents) and the 3m stood out. If I didn't sand a lot, or it were not my money (the boss' money) I would go for the 3m. Now, if a guy could sand worth of diablo 10 hours of doors in 8 hours using 3m. If my labor is worth $15-$70 depending on the time of the year, this would be balanced against the extra cost of the 3m paper, which i would not be surprised if more than $140 given the kind of price gouging paint stores are guilty of..... It takes really big jobs and writing the data down, side by side, to form a good opinion.... From this video, the bet is on 3m or the diablo to go head to head in a real long job.
I'm in process of a restoration of a old car. Hours and hours of sanding is ahead of me. You no doubt saved me many. What some disks I bought in error...Thank you once again.

3M in the next few weeks: “why tf are we selling so much sand paper all the sudden?!” Hahahaha.
And Dewalt saying why are our sales in the dumper???
More like diablo for me!!!
Pros know about 3M. They make the only wet or dry I'll buy.
Or buy 3m on sale. The longevity will make up for the fractional cost difference

After sanding tables for hours and hours at my last job, I can say with certainty that the quality of one brand can drastically change between grits. Some brands that are great at 120 are absolutely rubbish at anything over 800 and vice-versa. I would love to see a breakdown at each major grit between all these brands.

Great video none the less.

Tigershark $0.010
Dura Gold $0.012
Norton $0.013
Mirka $0.014
3m $0.016
Bosch $0.017
Dewalt $0.020
Makita $0.026
sandnet $0.029

wow!
Also factor in time to the equation to improve the stack rank!
In the end what sandpaper costs is not the major factor in a job. Labor is.

Thanks!!
Thanks so much! Great suggestion! Thank you.

@@eugenetswong he didn't say they are not good. he was wondering if they are worth the price =)
@@j3b3mt1username Fair enough, but it's hard to imagine them being good, if money is being thrown away.
This was a great idea for a video! Well tested too, thank you PF!
Thanks!
