This song hits so hard - she so perfectly describes feeling that constant existential dread that comes with depression, when you so frequently question life and what your purpose is - pairing it with a powerful video that captures the feeling of when you're little and try to play with Barbie a certain way but then things go wrong and you feel so out of control, and then tying that in to the message of the movie of the biggest struggle of life; trying to figure out who you are.
They are so insanely talented. Like it’s one thing to create art without restrictions, writing about break ups, etc. But Greta showed them the movie and asked them to come up with a song - and they managed to create this?? Something that totally fits the specific Barbie plot WHILE also personal to Billie?? I am impressed by these people’s creativity and skills. The melody is so Billie and it works so beautifully well in the movie when played with the montage about moments in life. So touching. Now whenever I play this song I want to cry
i agree with you, Billie is so talented. i made a short film featuring this song by her. It is about leaving abusive people and places. I would be really grateful if you could watch it and give your opinion on it, i am a beginner at filmmaking ❤️🩹
It baffles me that Billie is only 21, and she made a whole career for herself with her brother, but she’s not even 25 yet, and she can literally put a greatest hits out. She has so much time ahead of her, and can’t wait to see what will happen next in her career. She is just so naturally talented as her brother is, and it’s only been 5 years since her first album came out. That’s just crazy.
Feeling like you don't know how to be happy or just forgot, but also knowing that you maybe can be if you figure out what your purpose is - she describes depression so beautifully.
I'm glad that they're still interviewing with Zane. He was one of the first music critics who interviewed Billie and Finneas and actively boosted their music.
Zane and billies dynamic is so amazing to watch, the way they relay off of each other is so relaxed and authentic, we love to see the genuine connection between interviewer, interviewee, but also as friends 🩷🩷
So, I watched the movie, stunning, didn't hear the song, or at least, it was on my periphery. I saw the live video floating around RUclips and was piqued, but still didn't hit me. I start watching this video and stopped to watch Billie's official video. It has completely overwhelmed me. I'm too old for this, but it still hits like a ton of bricks. Came back to listen to the process. Thank you Apple Music for the great interview.
As a woman who played with Barbie as a kid, and then grew to experience the different nuances of life, then becoming a mother to a daughter This song hit me hard. Paired with the scenes in the movie, sitting with my stepmom and daughter, I was in tears in the theater 😭
Right?! At period time, we were the carefree little girls with Barbies in our hands and dreaming about everything. But next, we have our own daughters to buy a Barbie for. Feels like we are very different now. Deep down, we are still the same gleeful little girls.
I’m bedridden due to health and I put this song on my bed when I’m going crazy with pain and I fall asleep. I’m like a baby and this song stops the cycle of physical pain. Thank you 🙏🏼
This song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being a woman and not just that-the feeling of being a human that Barbie touches on. Here we have all of these expectations and pressures and too often I'm left questioning what exactly is it that im made for. What barbie taught me is that maybe the point is that im not made for any thing particularly, except the experience of real life
Lost my dad a month ago and heard this out of the blue and sure enough... I cried for 5+ hours because it truly encapsulates everything and nothing. Thank you for creating this masterpiece..

I remember when Ruth said take my hands close your eyes now feel and this song played I literally started bawling crying cause I felt like it was her saying feel your emotions and let them out . I suffer with terrible anxiety and have to take medication for it that when I heard this song it was like billie said everything I was feeling ( like Billie said it was exactly how she felt , it’d also how I feel ) dealing with stress and anxiety daily it’s like I forgot how to be happy and I don’t know how to deal with the anxiety of everyday life etc . This song is sung so beautifully it’s perfect and it was perfect for the barbie movie. This song really struck a chord deep for me and still to this day makes me emotional. She’s a great artist and this is my favourite Billie Ellis’s song to date

I rarely finishes an interview, and this has been the one that I have for the past couple of years. Billie's thought process and her love to her craft is something else
the reason i love it whenever zane is interviewing billie is that he cares enough to call her out on her self deprecating comments !!!! he's such a cool industry friend to have
the way zane and billie conversate with eachother is so perfect like they both have similar ways of thinking and are able to understand and relay off eachothers thoughts
i know there is a line of questions that need to asked but the relationship between these two makes the conversation flow so naturally like there’s no cameras, just two people talking about pop culture
The subconcious muind is so powerful, Billie has such a conextion its so cool to get to hear your deepest thoughts freely disconnecting yourself from it. Getting to know yourself like that is so surreal
this video is so comforting, the way they’re just sitting so casually in a theater and it just feels like two friends chatting, especially since the interviewer is a new zealander (like me lol), it feels so homely and warm.
Fantastic interview! I absolutely loved hearing her talk about how she wrote the song only thinking about Barbie, and later realized how much it related to her own life. Makes the song that much more beautiful. Billie and Finneas are truly some of the most special musicians of this generation, and it’s wild and wonderful we get to witness their growth as artists and people.
It's interesting to hear her perspective on what barbie was to her as a girl. She says that as a kid she didn't really think about how barbie was setting a beauty standard she wasn't part of. But as a little Asian girl in America in the 80s I did. I often felt a vein of resentment towards barbie and all dolls at the store, blonde was always the main product line with variations being brunette, and I resented that. I enjoyed barbie dolls and the fashions and the hair, it was decadent, but I wasn't white and dolls reminded me of that daily, and I thought I might never be as pretty as barbie. I'm glad this movie came out to help round out for society everything that barbie has touched on through the years. She's a toy and a fashion icon and a role model and a cautionary tale all in one. 👱♀️
Interesting, I never noticed that as much. I grew up in Russia and ot me Barbie signified a princess, nothing more. A celebration and a dream. And the fact that I didn't look like her didn't matter to me. I guess to each their own and each child internalized differently
When Finneas and Billie write for film, true alchemical magic happens. My favorites of theirs are always from film. 🙌🏽 This one takes the cake. 2nd Oscar on the way.
The songs they’re able to write together are just so powerful. The way they’re able to communicate raw emotions into everything they do makes them unstoppable! I hope they never stop writing and performing! I will listen to them until my dying day!
I love this format so much! Jumping right into conversation and treating this like a panel almost is what makes this feel like a conversation including the viewer, would love to see it continued ❤
You can't write about someone or something if you don't understand how they feel or have been through it yourself. That shows. This is an awesome interview!
Billie is such an amazing storyteller, her music and art are never empty of purpose and it's something truly spectacular to witness grow with each release.
It's beautiful that in a twist of fate even Billie got to experience that feeling of relating to a Billie Eilish song so much that it feels like she's speaking your hearts' words.
Yes, but she is still not happy … unfortunately with age , you also learn how to pretend you are happy, which as a teenager you can't because you don't have enough inner strength to do it, as an adult you live with it.. but she in this period of life feels drowned and lost and not happy and it’s normal in your early 20s especially after that huge success when she was just a kid
@@imaginaryvintage2695 no it’s not a bad road it’s just life .. When Billie was talking about not thinking about herself and only thinking about Barbie, is exactly what makes this song so relevant. We can all connect with this doll and Billie. We have all experienced these feelings. I feel like this song was made about me at times of my life. That's why it hits. Such a shared human experience. Well done
I hear/watch this song & my eyes & heart explode with emotions ....it's my life. I may be Billle's oldest (66) obsessively deeply heartfelt admirer for all the reasons since Ocean Eyes. As a retired jazz/classical pianist-turned teacher, and ex-singer (Carole King mostly) unable to perform in college & coffeehouses at 20 yrs old with new, crippling anxiety & depression that became debilitating. In 70s we/they knew NOTHING about treatment, guided meditation, mindfulness, deep breathing, refocusing, CBT, there was no CBD, ketamime etc etc.
Billie just made me want a Barbie movie with director's comments really, "What was i made for?" is soo good , her voice, the lyrics and the piano and sounds. I'm in love with it ❤❤
Billie’s duality between angsty, rebellious ballads and soothing, more-vulnerable compositions is what highlights her songwriting talents. We’re here for that. 💯
there’s so much admiration i have for billie and finneas, but this made me appreciate greta even moreso. to have a filmmaker that is so passionate and careful about their work, not to mention caring enough to give billie and finneas the space to feel and create something that spoke to them, is so rare and hard to come by.
@@needum9212yes because our feelings are expressed through lyrics and words and Melodie’s coming from other people who feel the same way as us. Small-minded people like y’all wouldn’t understand 😘
I didn’t listen to the song until the movie came out. I heard it for the first time as I sat through the credits. It was so so beautiful! And if I remember correctly there was this beautiful string play out at the end which aren’t isn’t in the single and that was gorgeous too. What a masterpiece. Billie and Finneas have such a stunning gift together. I’m happy I get to experience it. 💗💗💗
There are so many layers to this. Billie was injected into pop culture at such a young age that she has become an icon for us to look toward as somebody we adore, somebody we are inspired by, somebody we wonder "can we really be anything we want, just like what billie did, just by following her passions and making what she wanted to make?" and that's exactly how we should look at barbie. we can't try to be barbie, we can only try to be ourselves. follow your heart til it bleeds as amy lee sung in "end of the dream"
Very much this ❤ she's only a month younger than me and it's incredibly inspiring, and humbling lol, to see all that she's accomplished in our shared lifetime!
Love how she pulled out the little clothes that were a reference to her past music videos. Such a hit of nostalgia and I live for it. ❤️
I wish I could... but I just CAN'T watch it... ❤❤❤

This song just GETS it. It is exactly how I feel as well, Billie. Love it. Keep creating music.
Zane is the best interviewer out there regardless of genre or platform. Respect the craft.
I could listen to these two chat all day, they’re both so natural and relaxed together.
These two are so natural together, it really shows who they are. I feel like I could hang with either of them and it would just roll., so real. Thanks
You can't write about someone or something if you don't understand how they feel or have been through it yourself. That shows. This is an awesome interview!
Zane is just so personal and intimate with his stars. It’s beautiful. Billie is so real 🥹
she's literally the most beautiful person on earth i love her so much
Billie is such an amazing storyteller, her music and art are never empty of purpose and it's something truly spectacular to witness grow with each release.
It's beautiful that in a twist of fate even Billie got to experience that feeling of relating to a Billie Eilish song so much that it feels like she's speaking your hearts' words.
I have never seen her more animated or more self assured. I’m so happy she’s finding herself and finding light when the darkness settles back in
Ope another Natalie obsessive
Yes, but she is still not happy … unfortunately with age , you also learn how to pretend you are happy, which as a teenager you can't because you don't have enough inner strength to do it, as an adult you live with it.. but she in this period of life feels drowned and lost and not happy and it’s normal in your early 20s especially after that huge success when she was just a kid
@@Jack2729o Yeah she's chosen a bad road.
@@imaginaryvintage2695 no it’s not a bad road it’s just life .. I’m not happy either and I’m 30 😅all my life I asked myself the question of Billie's last song, I was depressed as a teenager, then I had a few years of happiness and then after 25 unhappiness .. life is ups and downs unfortunately .. who more and who less, but it's life and especially those who have already had depression like Billie and me, it's even more difficult bc it can come again .. the overly sensitive and empathetic people who feel the most are the ones who get "mentally tired" the most and risky and so also physically.. and she is in her early 20s and it’s a tough time especially bc she is maturing and changing but the world doesn't want her to naturally change and and they judge her to do what’s everyone do in their life bc it’s a biological and natural process so as if she is a robot/product that should play the part of teenager forever .. this girl needs support and respect, she has never killed anyone yet the hate she gets from 2020 is insane.. just bc she is successful and she is making her own art that likes the world. what a disgusting world .. I HATE THIS WORLD.. 🙄

Most genuine and relaxing interview I've seen in a long time..or ever. Love it!
When Billie was talking about not thinking about herself and only thinking about Barbie, is exactly what makes this song so relevant. We can all connect with this doll and Billie. We have all experienced these feelings. I feel like this song was made about me at times of my life. That's why it hits. Such a shared human experience. Well done
Zane really knows how to leave respectful distance when needed and to pull the ideas out of those he talks with
I hear/watch this song & my eyes & heart explode with emotions ....it's my life.
This is hands down the best Billie Eilish interview ive ever watched. What a chemistry
Her videos have aged so well. All of them! I literally love all of them. Even the ones not directed by her.
Billie just made me want a Barbie movie with director's comments really,
"What was i made for?" is soo good , her voice, the lyrics and the piano and sounds. I'm in love with it ❤❤
So interesting that you read the title that way!! Say more!
god i love her so much.
their interviews together are always so raw and pure, love them both.
I love her so much ❤ I hope they never stop making music
This is the best 30 mins I've spent today
Barbie and What was I Made For? is what the generation needs today. I can resonate...
Billie’s duality between angsty, rebellious ballads and soothing, more-vulnerable compositions is what highlights her songwriting talents. We’re here for that. 💯
How special she got to see it before others and to see it with the producers and how Greta shared her heart. Such an honor.
there’s so much admiration i have for billie and finneas, but this made me appreciate greta even moreso. to have a filmmaker that is so passionate and careful about their work, not to mention caring enough to give billie and finneas the space to feel and create something that spoke to them, is so rare and hard to come by.
I cried when she said that is how she feels, I hope she's doing okay❤❤🩹🩹

She’s literally saved my life over and over again. Thank you Billie for existing ❤️
pretty sure she "literally" did not unless she has been doing EMT training on the side
@@JamesJoyce12 I always think it funny when someone says they saved my life. like what you mean? your telling me a song saved you come on.
@@needum9212yes because our feelings are expressed through lyrics and words and Melodie’s coming from other people who feel the same way as us. Small-minded people like y’all wouldn’t understand 😘
@@Thealexiswhite I get that but how did that save your life. your telling me if you didnt hear these songs you would be dead right now?
@@needum9212 probably 💀
I didn’t listen to the song until the movie came out. I heard it for the first time as I sat through the credits. It was so so beautiful! And if I remember correctly there was this beautiful string play out at the end which aren’t isn’t in the single and that was gorgeous too. What a masterpiece. Billie and Finneas have such a stunning gift together. I’m happy I get to experience it. 💗💗💗
I loved the fact that everyone has their own view and can shape this song into how they feel and relate too.
"Something you paid for" was the pivotal emotional turning point in the song to me. Drove me to tears (even when viewing it in the movie).
Makes you think about what might have been if her twin sibling survived.
