Hey John, Perry here. Just picked up a crack free L-Century 1934 and man is it a great box. Thanks for the great comparison, it helped me find the right one.
I thought he was joking about the Nick Lucas guitar but on a Martin guitar blog there was a whole thread about the guitar- it had been in a shed and her husband was going to chuck it out- it had belonged to his father and was more than a little care worn! I only came across the thread a couple of days ago!
The 1931 Gold sparkle argentine grey L2 has been my dream guitar for years & I think it wins hands down for looks but the L Century just noses it here on tone. Thanks for sharing these guitars, great job. Lucky buggar.....
Thanks for that. I’m struggling to decide which to buy. Both are in excellent condition and all original. It’s between a 35 L-00 and a 37 L-C. The L-C is about $1000 bucks more but has an original case. L-00 is $9k. I had a 36 L-00 and loved it. Traded it years ago for a Santa Cruz H model but missed that old woody Gibson sound. The dollar’s I quote are Canadian dollars so much less in the US. Tonally is there a big difference between the two due to the MOTS? I can’t really hear a big difference in the video. I think the L-C is a tad rarer but I do like the mahogany on the L-00. In your opinion condition being equal now cracks all bracing in lace etc what would the readers choose? Sorry for the long winded note but I’m struggling to decide. I will not be able to play em before buying but I know the neck and sound having had the L-00 so I’m good in that regard. Thanks!
I don't think that the MOTS affects tone. The big difference is that the L-C features maple back and sides while the L-00 features mahogany back and sides.
@@Richard_Lush Yeah, even with good mics, it's difficult to tell the difference on a video. I don't have a good mic, just a Shure mic that plugs into my iPhone.
I really enjoyed your "little dittie" on all of those wonderful old Gibsons, the Nick Lucas did have the most "open" sustain but I enjoyed them all, nice clear high end on them all.
Thanks for the demo, and I think you're a really good player! I was really excited to see the L2 because I'm building one right now. This is my first guitar and it's going well. Maybe when I'm done I'll post me playing it. I'm not as good as you though.
Wow, that was fun. Lovely collection! I like hearing the Nick Lucas, but, in my extremely limited experience, like playing the shallower L-00s. Funny how that works. Also, I'm loving the 12 fret '32 L-00's. Most I've 12 fretters I've seen were the HG-00 converted to the spanish neck. Thanks much!
I watched this a year or two ago and didnt' mention anything. I'm glad I came back to it. My vote's with the Black and White. They're all fantastic guitars, but I'm a sucker for the richness of a 12 fretter's bass. Loved the trebles too. It may not have had the best mids of the bunch, but I wouldn't call it missing--nice overtones.
1931 is the only year they made gold binding on the L2? There is an L2 for sale that I am interested in, but it's advertised as a 1929 L2, it has gold binding.
John, Sure wish you would stop calling your own playing mediocre. It's clear that you love these guitars and tunes and your spirit really shines through your playing. I've listened to your Larson Brothers videos about a million times and enjoy them more and more. Please keep up the good work! Chad
I'm from Tasmania (now in Youngstown Ohio) and am on the verge of pulling the trigger and buying a Nick Lucas in the original L1 shape. If you happen to read this I would love to know what little shack in what little town and from who you acquired the Nick Lucas. Tassie is a small place and I can almost guarantee that my Dad would know a friend of the person who owed that guitar.
The L-00 sounds the best because it's X braced. Gibson just kept making the L-00 better and better. I myself prefer the LG2 which is what I have. I wish I had a Country Jumbo. I also have two National Duolians 12 and 14 fret.
They are all X-braced except for the L-1, which has what I call V-bracing: essentially only the lower bout portion of an X brace. As for LGs, here's my comparison of all of the LG models: ruclips.net/video/SC2mJLRLFqU/видео.html&ab_channel=johnthomasguitar
so self deprecating ...so much of playing comes from feel and you certainly have that. while these guitars are great, let’s get back to ones built by Any Other Name ; ) While Gibson’s are my first love, a silly Stetson w weird 1/2 binding sure stole my heart and that’s comparing it to a ‘67 Hummingbird, ‘68 LG-0 and ‘54 Lg-1 ...I’ve Kept the Lg-1 bc of the generous string spacing, orig I liked all string width tight, now i’ve since went the path of many a 10 yr seasoned player allowing myself more room on the LH ... hmmm Lcentury, yikes that Mother of Toilet seat sure just vampires any tone off that fingerBoard ahhh
Are they all about the same size? Are you a small fella, because they look much bigger than I'd thought! I'm an oversized fatty though. :( Love your videos and your sense of humor!
Very instructive John, cheers!
Thank you, my friend.

Thanks for sharing! Amazing picking’
Thank you!
What a treat to hear all these guitars. I found the L-1 to have the crispest, sweetest vintage tone of the lot, at least to my ear!
Really appreciate this journey through time!!! Have a 1935 l00. Digging that L1. Oh man!!!
I think the L-1 had the crisp and clear sound with better projection.
Enjoyed this. I'm the happy owner of three 1930 L-0's. Love 'em.

True treasures ! And good playing too thanks for posting.
Very authoritative distinctive sound notes!! I like it, because does not vibrate too long which makes it nice bass very authoritative.
Love them all mate, completely jealous! Great playing mate!
Hello, Martin,
Thanks for posting this! The guitar was in the town of Bridport and the woman who sold it to me was Nicole Smythe .
WOW, the '36 is the most beautiful Gibson I think I have ever seen. Congrats on being able to acquire all these amazing instruments.
Thank you for this comparison video with those great historic guitars!
Great job done!

Lucky buggar.....
Littlehandsj185 Thanks for the kind words!

So more highs on the L-C and more mids on the L-00? I really can’t tell too much difference. Thanks for the reply.

Just stumbled onto this John. Very cool comparison. I think the L-2 won, close! Beauties John!
Thanks, Bill! You should have posted this before I sold the L-2! :)
The L 00 is my favorite although all of them have very similar tone.
Thanks! I use D'Addario light gauge phosphor bronze strings.
Interesting and always wonderful guitars!!
cryin' for one!...
:))
darn beautiful stuff!!!

What's the name of that fine tune?
John, I posted a new video entitled Robert Johnsons guitar 1937 STELLA gambler. Would love your opinion on it. Thanks again.
Thanks, folks!
Wow, thanks for sharing! Beautiful guitars - all of them and fine blues! Out of curiosity, do you have a favorite?
Nice playing John! I'm not sure which guitar I like best! Tony
Chad, thanks for the kind words!

awesome playing, how much do these go for from that era?

I like the L-2 best.

@keithvs2
"but suggest you sell your Gibson collection and buy more Larsons."

Thanks for the kind words, too!
nice
Nice guitars and playing but surprisingly to be honest could not hear much difference between any of them.
Mediocre playing my A--. You are awesome.
seemed like you were grooving the most on the L-2...
