Great video. I too love these short, very focused ones. I started watching it thinking “nope, gomphrena, not my cup of tea”. But when I saw the pics from October- when so much of the garden is looking tired and spent - well, am definitely going to order a packet - or two!!
Hi Susan! I'm glad you enjoyed. I have about a half dozen or so queued up that I'm working on. I hope to drop one a week for the next several weeks. These will all be short. Thanks for watching!
It really is!! The pack had around 25 seeds, with nearly 100% germination. It's incredible how bulked up and bushy each plant got. And all for about $3. I'm still amazed for my first time growing gomohrena.
Hi Rhonda, I'm glad you enjoyed 😊 I started this new "spot light series" to highlight plants I've enjoyed growing, or have experience with. I'll periodically share one over the winter months.
In my old job, I once had a customer who ask is there anything that flowers all summer and you do not have to water no matter how long drought conditions last. After careful consideration my recommendation was Gomphrena-because it is the only plant, I know that can grow at the gates of Hell. Great plant and you have wonderful garden.
So good to see your gomphrena border again. It was absolutely glorious. Excited to start these seeds in the summer and looking forward to watching how your new snow white variety does.
I was so blown away by how beautiful this border was in one of your other videos that I ordered the seeds to try this coming season. Thank you for sharing!
They look gorgeous!!! I planted about 30 seeds but did not know the seeds needed to be soaked. I am happy to say they all grew anyway and are now about 6” tall. I’m so excited!! Thank you so much for your video Steph! 🌷🌷🌷
@@HookedandRooted omg Steph, we just got 15” of snow Saturday so it WILL be long 😂😂😂. Eventually it will look beautiful. Have you ever pinched them back? Mine are already about 6-7” tall and I can’t plant until Memorial Day here in Wisconsin so I’m not sure. Thank you for always taking the time to respond. You are so very appreciated 🌷
You technically don't *need* to soak any seed. It just helps is germinate faster. I like to soak mine bc I always forget to go out and water seeds as they're germinating. But the result is the same whether you do it in-ground or inside first- eventually they germinate.
Thank you for the spotlight! I ordered gomphrena because of your first video. I garden in zone 10b and was thrilled to hear gomphrena is drought tolerant. Planting it to line my front walkway as well. 😊🙏🏾
These are such great flowers and your front border looks fantastic. So glad to hear the deer didn't like them. They're great dried flowers too so I think you've inspired me to give these flowers a try. Thanks for the great video Steph.
Steph, a beautiful flower border so glad you did a shorten version to growing Gomphrena. Just received my Baker Creek seeds giving the purple and white Gomphrena a try this spring.
I first learned about this beauty from you. I decided to take a chance and ordered some seeds. I am a newbie gardener in AZ and these babies grow so well for my 9b zone. One plant can put on a show for months in full sun, 110 plus degrees. I’m collecting the seeds for next year. Thank you. ❤
Hi Hannah! I'm so happy to hear this!! Thank you so much for coming back to this video to give me some feedback. I'm so glad to hear it's done so well for you. I love it also, and its a must grow for me. Tough as nails, and doesn't skip a beat. Blooms like crazy even in high heat, and dry conditions.🌱💚
I also planted gomphrena (atomic purple) the first time this year and absolutely loved them. Even more will be planted next season. I harvested and dried some at the end of the season, I’ll harvest more since I plan on making several wreaths.
Wow, what a lovely result….I love how they spill over along your border pathway. Thank you for providing dates and various growth stages too. I think I’ll try these in a barren patch this summer, hopefully they’ll brighten things up.
Hi Steph, I just ordered some gomphrena seeds as per your walk way and your comments about it over the past few months. I hope my plants are as good looking as yours were. Thanks for this video!
Hi Heidi! I have no doubt yours will turn out great as well. I didn't do anything special or baby them, which is why I love them so much, for the ease. All I did was soak the seeds per pack instructions, plant them out to the recommended depth, and water until the seedlings established (got to be about 6-12 inches tall), then I backed off and they were up and running on their own!
Thanks so much for doing this spot light - I purchased these seeds after seeing one of your fall garden tours, I’m also MA 6B, so looking forward to trying these next summer!
Wow! I loved seeing the gomphrena in a flower bed. I've seen it used by flower farmers in straight beds and I was really enchanted by how it looked. Now I'm even more excited to plant it in my garden this spring .
aww so cute, ive planted them now but the white one. i like them because they always flowering in every stem, the flower last long, and so easy to grow even from the dropped flower it will sprout by itself

How wonderful that it is now the beginning of Summer where you are. Enjoy it! I hope the gomphrena blooms beautifully for you. Its been one of my favorite flowers to grow from seed 🌱The 3 will look gorgeous together.
Thanks Step. I saw this plant in my nursery and grabbed a couple. I really like the color and the shape. So different. I am now going to attempt to save the seeds and plant next summer.
I just planted 3 starts from our local nursery. Right now they are looking pretty gangly, but I’m hoping mine look as pretty as yours once the fill out. If they do, I’ll be planting them from seed next year!
Hi Michelle, I'm sure they'll do great. We had a very drought summer, and I had them planted in my full sun border, and they thrived. Just remmember to water them regularly as the seedlings are growing. Once they get to be about 10-12" tall, you can back off on watering as often and let the weather take care of things.
Thanks to remind me to sow mid june one of my favorites...i im trying to build up on the red and orange ones more taller variety real beauty. I got my first seeds from A plant and the seeds are growing hoping to have lots of blooms this summer into fall great video
Hi Yvonne, you might even be able to start them mid to end of May depending on your last frost date. I plan on starting mine here in zone 6b (Massachusetts), by May sometime. So a bit earlier than last grow season. Red and orange ones sound very pretty. I grow mostly cool colors, but always find such beauty in the warm colors when seeing others gardens. Thanks for watching! 🌱
Thank you for the growing tips! These are beautiful flowers. Like you, we have lots of deer. I think they’re rather smart thinking my yard is an open salad bar! I’m looking forward to Spring & planting. Happy New Year!
That is so beautiful! Did you notice a smell from them? I know Laura from Garden answer said that one variety that she planted didn’t really have a good scent and was wondering what you thought?
Thank you so much for this video! I had to put my seeds in a pot this year. Can you tell me why the leaves in my pot turn yellow and much fewer blooms?
Loved this video and have watched it several times. On your recommendation, I planted Atomic Purple Gomphrena and it is now in bloom and just a glorious flower. You mentioned that you would be planting a white Gomphrena this year. Have you planted it, and if so, was it as successful as the purple variety? Hopefully you were successful and another Gomphrena video we be coming soon. Thank you!
Hi Margie!! Yay, I'm so happy your enjoying the atomic Purple. I am growing the white right now. It's in the same spot. I actually just finished filming a August Garden Tour that I should have up tomorrow evening. The white is also growing really well, but the purple was my favorite. I may go back to that one next season! It's such a wonderful low fuss plant that just blooms and blooms.
I loved your gomphrena border! Are you planning on putting the white ones in the same area? Last year was my first time planting them. This will definitely be one I plant every year. I bought several varieties : las vegas mix, atomic purple, strawberry fields, mandarin orange and globosa mix. I do want to do a large drift of them like you did. Definitely eye catching! Thank you
Hi Roger! That is a great recommendation. I'm now a firm believer in how gomphrena is a champ in drought conditions! We had one of the hottest and driest summers in recent history here in the northeast, and the gomphrena was fantastic!!
Hi There, I will be direct sowing them once I have my last frost date at the beginning of May. You can try winter sowing, but I had mixed results when I tried a few in a winter sowing container. I will also start a few in a seed cell tray to have backups if the direct sowed ones don't take. But again that tray will be done outside after last frost date.
@@HookedandRooted Thank you for sharing. I will attempt the direct sow and seed trays too.🤔 New in winter sowing, direct sowing and seed starting, this year is a year of many experiments!! 😀🤞Do you just put the seed trays out in the open after last frost, or do you still try to create a greenhouse effect and cover with a dome ?
Hi Barbara! Thank you. I would say you can water them occasionally, if the soil feels dry. Depending on what zone your in, you can likely pull out the containers and place them in the next few weeks. I'm pulling mine out in February. That way the elements (rain, and/or snow) will help keep them moist and watered, and they will start getting sun which they need to bloom well. Hope this helps.
I have an apt patio and it is covered. I have planted tulips and daffodils with potting soil with cocoa peat. I need to know if I should water during the winter. I live in zone 7. Thank you.
Hi Pat, The pots should be watered occasionally, if they aren't getting any water from the elements. In a zone 7, my guess is that your spring bulbs typically bloom a bit earlier than mine in zone 6. I would say that they need some water yes, so perhaps every couple of weeks give them a watering, and then by February move them into position where they will get rain and sun. They will need sun to flower best. Hope this helps.
Hi Michelle! I hope you have a great experience with them. Yes, I will definitely be starting these earlier this year. Right after my last frost date. I waited a bit last year because the tulip foliage was still dying back. I just fell behind. Fingers crossed I can start most annuals earlier this year. I was really late on marigolds this year too.
Just curious, you said the deer didn't bother them, but did they reach over and go after anything behind or around them? I may consider gomphrena if they discourage the deer from coming around. Would you recommend starting indoors or direct sowing? I'm zone 7, Maryland. Thanks
Hi Janice! Oh they sure do reach around them and chomp on my knockout roses if I forget to spray them with deer repellent. While they don't favor or eat the gomhrena, they will pick and choose around for plants they do like. Unlike marigolds that let out a fragrance that tends to help repel them, the gomphrena didn't have a fragrance, so it didn't help repel them. I was just glad they didn't feast on my beautiful border.
Love your very educational videos! Very inspiring! Would you be able to add a link to your most reliable sources of seeds for the gomphrena please? I’m excited to try these! Thanks!
Hi there. Thanks for the kind words and I'm happy you enjoyed the video. Take a look at this video ruclips.net/video/vMn3NAf-aQY/видео.html where I feature a few sites that I buy seeds from, and I specifically feature and talk about gomphrena... Hope it helps.
I got the white ones from Baker Creek too lol yea! The seeds are so small I got them soaked and I guess I’ll direct sow them … wish me luck.. did they reseed themselves ?
Hi Marion, I haven't noticed any reseeding going on yet. Perhaps they will and just haven't germinated yet. I'll have to try to notice in the coming weeks as the season warms up. The seeds are pretty small. You can start them in little pots ahead of time if you wanted too, in very sunny window, or wait to direct sow them. Both methods worked well for me. I tried a handful in winter sowing (didn't do too well), I sowed some in a few small pots with potting mix, they germinated, and I also direct sowed after soaking the seeds, and those did very well also.
@@HookedandRooted overnight turned into 2 nights and some of them are sprouted out that’s so incredible I decided to put them in started packs so I can have more control and see where I put them lol they seem to be off to a good start . I just ordered those seeds and I’m so excited to plant them now seeing what a good harvest you had Did you know you can make tea from these flowers? That’s another thing I want to do..
I just came across your channel and I already know I will continue! I do have a question though. I have not taken my own seeds very often but this year I did. One was of the pinball gomphrena I grew and boy was it amazing... but when I went to open for the seed it all just looked like chaff. could you share a close up of the seed? thanks
Hi there, Mine have lots of chaff too. You can rub them between your fingers once they've dried enough and most of the chaff should rub off. Also, since gomphrena seed directions typically say to soak seeds overnight before sowing to improve germination. My thought is that soaking them will also help remove some of that chaff. Large scale seed companies probably have machines that do this process I imagine.
Hi Guys! No pruning at all!! literally soaked seeds, planted them out, watered until seedling plants were about 6-12 inches tall, then they were on their own! Hard as nails plant! Even with our heat and drought this summer.

I forgot you mentioned Baker Creek.
I just ordered some a few minutes ago! Thank you again!
Have you ever had these to self seed? I have something coming up, it's either gomphrena or " touch ME NOT " impatiens .
Thanks so much !!! I hope they look as pretty as yours did last season !!! 🖤🤍💚 I’ve got a bunch of vincas that have reseeded so that’s fun I’m gonna throw some more out and add to them love ya
That was amazing! Was that from one packet? I want those so bad 😊
Can i plant the seeds straight to the ground?
Hi 👋 do you have the video of how your white globes turned out?
Dont they have a bad smell ? They did looked beautiful down your walkway
Hi Agnes! No fragrance at all on these, good or bad. I didn't notice any smell.
Do garden nurseries sell them already sprouted ?
Hi Rosie, yes I've seen them at nurseries. I'm pretty sure proven winners sells an annual gomphrena.
@@HookedandRooted cool - I’d like to use them as a thriller in a large pot
I just ordered those seeds and I’m so excited to plant them now seeing what a good harvest you had Did you know you can make tea from these flowers? That’s another thing I want to do..
Hi Jennifer, yes it does appear that they can be used for tea per the website photos. Though I have never tried. They are beautiful flowers. Enjoy! 🌱
@@HookedandRooted Think I accidentally through away a lot of potential seeds darn
That's our kinda plant, Steph !! Crazy long growing time !!
Did you do any maintenance/ pruning?
Cheers Jason and Colleen 🌱🌱🌱
Hi Guys! No pruning at all!! literally soaked seeds, planted them out, watered until seedling plants were about 6-12 inches tall, then they were on their own! Hard as nails plant! Even with our heat and drought this summer.
@Hooked and Rooted even more my kinda plant now, Steph!! Super hardy !!
Hey Steph! What is the name of the rose bush in your planter. Such a vibrant color. TIA.
Hi Monica! Those are double pink knockout roses 💕
I live in Delaware, if I am directly sowing into the ground now, do I still have to soak them for 24 to 48 hours? Love your videos! 💛
Hi Robyn! Thank you so much. Yes, I would recommend it. It helps break down the outer shell (chaff) of the seed, which will help it germinate easier.
Leave the roots in the ground when doing fall cleanup for soil health
I have since changed over to doing that as of this past season. Thank you for the recommendation.
Hi, how many seed packets did you use for your flower bed?
Hi, 1 pack.
Thank you for replying. You present great gardening info and I appreciate your videos.
Wow your gomphrena grew so tall and lush! Did you fertilize them at all? I can't wait until summer rolls around to start mine!
Hi Kat, no fertilizer at all. It did this all by itself. I planted. Seed every 6-8". It made for a dense border
Could you describe the color for me, is it more pink or purple?
Purple.
Can i get this gomphrena seeds
I need seed's 😍💕
