    Awesome Job. You always work on other people's stuff as if it was your own. I was the one who thought you did a nice job on the chopping the top on the Model A coupe. You are very detailed about your work and you have a lot of patience and very confident in your self. I noticed others who have done videos who didn't really plan it out when going to chop the top on their cars when they were doing a RUclips video. Its like you have a all steel model a or 32 coupe it's like you have only one chance to get it right and cars are getting ruined because people are thinking it's easy to do. Your work is A1 guys that live near you are very lucky to have someone that knows how to build old traditional hotrod's

    Hey Travis, great job man!! I've been a fabricator (basic Shop) all my adult life, if you can picture it in your head you can build it, but I'm lost when it comes to English wheels & planishing hammers...I do have a question, how do you stop panels from oil canning after bead rolling?I think I know the answer, but I'm curious of your answer...be safe!!! God Bless!!

      @@RACGARAGE Tip #1: The lower shrinking die should be offset backward by 1/32" - i.e. the dies do not sit perfectly one on top of the other. When the lower die is moved slightly backward the flat area in front of the section that creates the flute increases. It is this flat spot that does the actual shrinking when the material is pulled back out. (This tip comes from Stan Fulton who makes some of the best dies in my opinion and, it looks like your thumbnail dies are Stan Fulton dies.)
      Tip #2: When pulling the material back out (i.e. when you are crushing the flute), pull back out at twice the speed that you used when creating the flute. (This tip comes from Mike Phillips who demonstrated the technique on a power hammer equipped with thumbnail dies.) While Mike did not explain the reasoning, I believe it has to do with getting more shrink from each flute. As an example, when shrinking with a stump, most people close the outboard edge of the flute leaving a little bubble they then crush down (i.e. shrink). Closing the flute (sometimes referred to as "locking the shrink") prevents the metal from simply flattening back out without achieving any shrink. With thumbnail dies there is no way to lock the shrink / close the flute prior to crushing. I believe that by using a faster withdrawal speed there is less time for the material to spread outward; instead the metal tends to collapse on itself (i.e. shrink). As a practical matter the flute forming speed (i.e. when you're pushing the material into the die) is irrelevant, the key is to pull the material out briskly; again, so the material has less time to spread and is more likely to shrink.
      Hope this helps!

    • @AlphaBobFloridaOverlord
      @AlphaBobFloridaOverlord 2 года назад

      @@RACGARAGE Tip #3: I've only ever seen thumbnail dies used dry - i.e. no lubrication. I honestly didn't notice if you used lube with the thumbnail dies, but if you do you might try wiping both the dies and the sheet metal with acetone so they are bone dry prior to shrinking. The reason is that the thumbnail dies rely on friction to hold the tuck on the way back out. If the sheet is lubricated you get much less shrink.
      Simple test: take two pieces of scrap and shrink both the same number of passes: one with your current approach, the other with the three suggestions.
      Great videos and keep up the good work!
