This song stuck to me back then like it's sticking to my now. He sings this song and it is as if you are feeling that same loneliness. Feelings of utterly being left alone. A brilliant song. My wife and I were on a trip to Ireland to bring in the new year of 2016. We ended up staying an extra week, we were in a restaurant and I recognised Colin sitting with friends and sent the table a bottle of wine. He came over, shook our hands and was totally charming. When we asked for our bill, we were told Mr Vercombe had taken care of it. A short time later he was gone. RIP Colin and thank you.
One of the most beautiful songs of all time - yes, I am intensely aware of its irony, but this song (and album) kept me going during a horrible time and I will forever love it and the dulcet voice of Mr Vearnecombe, sadly missed but never forgotten

Although there are some people claiming that there some suicidal elements in this song, for me it's a glorification of life. I was lonely and a new immigrant to a country which I had no friends or family but had to immigrate to at a young age for my life and other circumstances in 1986…. This song was my soulmate and kept me going! So sad and reminds me of those tough days in my life. He left us too early 😢

I grew up in Southport and saw Black play at the International Garden Festival in Liverpool in 1984 alongside some other acts. I cannot remember who the rest were except Western Promise. Colin Vearncombe was a rare talent. Southport is a strange place but it's where I learned and cultivated my love of music in the eighties.

I should have checked first but I think this is what happened. The Garden Festival really was something in its day and gained a lot of publicity for the area and achieved national recognition. Now it seems like something frozen in time.

I thought I heard this song yesterday in the background of a busy restaurant but it was something else. I couldn’t remember how it went other than a snippet of a line and a bit of melody, yet I remembered it was a song I had really loved because it was so beautiful. I tried to make my brain remember more so I could try to look it up and then just now the line came me - look at me standing, here on my own again - and now we are reunited after more than 30 years. We had such good music back in the 80’s. It was a magical time. I wish I could go back in time.
