- Welcome to the video!
This is a DIY project making miniature old fashioned prairie bonnets for display in small scale scenes, dollhouses & general stores; historical clothing examples or 1:12 doll costumes.
I am working on a prairie house & plan on adding a bonnet or two inside.
The video shows the hat bonnet made by gluing & sewing the fabric pattern pieces from a thin cotton or similar material 6 x 10” piece or so by using a pattern from Eleanor Hudacsek as printed in the Nutshell News, May 1984 edition. It was nice of her to share her pattern. The older editions are available online through eBay & other sellers.
The bonnet measures about 1 3/4” length (back view) x 1 1/2 width (front view) x 1” depth (sides & top views).
Ideas for the fabric include thin small print or floral Calico designs, checkered or gingham prints made from cotton or similar materials.
The purpose of the hat was to protect from the sun & wind, warmth & keep hair back from face.
The Mattel 1971 Rock Flower doll ‘Lilac’ is the hat model in video. This is a 6 1/2” doll but the head display gives a general idea of fit. She is 53 years of age, with original outfit (bright color tunic, coral tights);reddish rooted hair with attached coral sunglasses; peach painted lips; brown brows & eyes; the bendable arms & legs do not have the ‘green patches’ at knees or elbows but the fingers & thumbs have a bit of gray marks. Not sure about the plastic necklace
There are a number of ways to make bonnets in addition to way shown in the video. Here are two other sources:
Hudacsek, Eleanor L. “Miniature Prairie Bonnets”. Nutshell News (magazine). May 1984, pages 80-81. Illustrated pattern drawn by Debbie Yalch. This is shown in video.
