For me Grandia is the best brings back the memories when I was in highschool
The first 2 grandias are impeccable, true masterpieces... And the 3 is excellent despite not being on the same level as the Grandia 1 and 2. For me if I were to choose the favorite it would be the Grandia 1.
Same
because of the wonderfull Music
Yes.G1 has scary music on a scary dungeon but G2 all La Congas.G2 in a serious place has funny music and on funny place a serious music.
The original Grandia is such a beautiful game.
It makes me think of working designs. How I wish that gaming company still existed.
@Minh Le unfortunately not. Working designs didn't create grandia. Sony created grandia.
You should look up some of the games from working designs like lunar or vanguard bandits. Absolute gems
@@Dmitch1408 Working Designs is a company that localized games (such as Arc the Lad or Lunar), it's not a game maker. The company that made Grandia and Lunar is GameArts, not Sony. Btw, Working Designs is now dead but the team still works on localizing obscure JRPG under another name: Gaijinworks.
Very doubtful that Sony created Grandia as it appeared on the Sega Saturn
@@Dmitch1408 No Sony didn't create Grandia if they did they'd be talking about making it into an action rpg. I have the old Grandia games and it's GameArts not Sony.
@Minh Le Since nobody mentioned, the recent Grandia ports were done by GungHo games. They own the Grandia (1 and 2, probably not but not sure about 3) and Lunar licences.
That 100 floor extra dungeon in Grandia Xtreme is how it got its name.
I got my A kicked at floor 50 until I went up some floors and leveled A LOT.
Grandia II is my all time favorite. I read somewhere that there won't be another Grandia since the original writer/director Takeshi Miyaji passed away and that came from his brother Yoichi.
so grandia 4 never happen why i need grandia next gen with sue from grandia 1 🙏
Grandia extreme was done by the original creators brother after the original creator passed away for having fans still hold on to the series. His brother made grandia 3 with a awesome battle mechanic but story wise was really lacking.
@@josesuarez1711 I know but Takeshi passed away in 2011 and there hasn't been a new Grandia since.
Sales on extreme and 3 were really bad. Hopefully with the release of the HD version on PC and switch if sales are good gungho said that probably will do a HD version of 3 and depending on sales will probably make a new entry. One can only hope.
@@josesuarez1711 A re-release of Grandia 3 would be great but I would love if Lunar got re-released.
whoa, i just started the Grandia HD collection. What timing.
shoutout to the intro song of Grandia 3 that routinely gets RUclips and Twitch videos taken down
Playing right now Grandia 2 and it's ok. To be honest, the first game made me fell in love and it's one of my favorite jrpgs but the second one is kinda... yea pretty good but it's not in my top 10.
totally agree. the 1 one is my fav game ever. The 2nd one just doesn't do it enough for me. I had it on PC as a kid and was obsessed by it, until I realized a few years back when I actually managed to finish it to a 100%, that I didn't like it near as much as the 1st one.
I can replay the 1st one every year but I wouldn't do the same for Grandia II
The first one is full of adventure and personality.
@@bloodpollution21 I definitely prefer that tone for the series but we can't fault the developers for trying something new like a darker story. I still think Grandia II has a little charm as well, sadly I didn't get that from the third game.
This seems to depend on the first Grandia you fell in love with. I played Grandia 2 when i was young and absolutely loved it, i still find the characters and story extremely attractive and full of heart. Nostalgia perhaps, though i replayed it very recently and still loved it. (same thing with Final Fantasy by the way)
That being said, with all the praise for Grandia 1, i'm looking forward to play it as well!
I am not judging the story or characters of 1 and 2. But i was really turn down by the battle system in 2. I dont see the hype as he mention in the video. One of my favorites perks in Grandia was the upgrade of weapons and magic by using, giving you status points, making not much necessary grind for exp but mostly just to level up your skills. Also was much more quick the battles for me..
I am still playing Grandia 2 HD but not as nearly enjoyable as the first one
Grandia Xtreme also had the hilarious voice work by Dean Cain, Lisa Loeb, and Mark Hamill!
It was dubbed by the same studio that did the voice acting for Robot Alchemic Drive.
I literally just beat grandia 3 a few days ago for the 6 or 7th time. I always reply it after some years its one of my all time favs.
Grandia 1-2 best RPGs ever made, battle systems for me were fun and easy to understand, I can’t stand games super complex
I've been watching your videos recently and i gotta say yiur faithfulness to backtrack rpgs and dive in to their history is truely amazing. I just subscribed my good sir. Looking forward to more awesome videos!!
I like that in Grandia 2 the 'It can still be pretty challenging' was said while the eye-of-valmar fight was going on. On my first playthrough that was only boss that I actually lost to, iirc due to a deluge of status effects.
Yes, if there is one fault in Grandia 2 is that it's TOO easy, as in, baby's first RPG levels of hard to lose. Thankfully, there's a hard mode in HD version.
@@KasumiRINA wasnt hard Mode a thing in the PS2 version too or just NG+ as an unlockable? Or was it a DC & PC version exclusive feature back then, pre remaster?
For me, the first Grandia is just so much better it's not even a contest. Then there is 2, and way after all the rest.
Great video as always, I need to get around to 3 soon, just started Legendia though!
Love Grandia! And that you used "The Three Young Women" in the G1 section - one of my favorite songs from that game and still on my phone today! "Deck Swabbing" and "Complete Victory" also hold a special place in my heard.
All other Grandia games don't even touch to I and II imo.
Wow, I was in my second year in college when the first Grandia was released. Back then, I was fully into JRPGs and couldn't get enough of them. The first two Grandias were pretty cool. I never played the third one.
3 has the weakest story and characters but the best gameplay. Probably my favorite turn based battle system
Gintama is the best anime
3 has the weakest gameplay imo. it easily breakable. you can get the best spell in the game as soon as you unlock egg fusion. and the best item if you invest little time in casino
@@si-level oh yeah thats definitely an unfortunate truth about the progression, heh. fact of the matter is youll have to decide between powering through the battles to the greatest possibility, or artificially limiting yourself to enjoy the challenge more; in later replays ive personally leaned more towards the latter. i think if you DO keep yourself from just using the best magic out there, the gameplay can be a huge joy, though!
Facts but I can't rank it higher than the original grandia
@@si-level You can, but you don't need to.
Loved both 1 and 2 but the first one is always gonna be memorable
Yes.60 hr gameplay and double item spells than g2.G2 just 30hrs.
Just finished Grandia 2, was really impressed with the characters. I thought they did a great job of building them and their struggles.
hi your contents are great, might want to work on your mic and volume optimization, whenever i watch i tend to adjust my volume on your content (voice volume when on screen, then your intro or your channel intro, then on your review itself) constructive criticism here try to maintain a specific volume between your contents
Love the content flow brother!
Jokes aside. You've been doing a pretty nice work buddy! What you do in your videos saying and stating your true oppinions and feelings is to teach people to express themselves and being truth to who they are and your oppinions! You do not chose the most praised game, but the one that you trully apreciate! That is nice!!
2 is one of my fav jrpgs and has a lot of nostalgic value for me. The characters, music, and story were great. Although I would actually say it was too easy.
I'm surprised to see 2 at the #1 on this list though because most people always say 1 was better which I have not played.
G1 easier.G1 60hrs G2 only 30hrs.Justin 8sp techs Ryudo only 4.Thor Cut more beauty than Flying Tensei.Zap all very beautiful purple while G2 Zap all dull blue.
What is the game that Erick shows on the intro song??
I remember playing Grandia 3 and getting amazed by the graphics. However, the story was boring me to the death, so I've ultimately dropped it.
I hope we get more grandia games remastered or ported to modern consoles! I'm new to the series and only have the recent remaster on the Switch.
Maybe a video with best/worst cover art? Nice video btw!
Games/Series that needs to come back and/or get remasters: Breath of Fire series, Earthbound/Mother series, Secret of Evermore, Illusion of gaia, Lufia, Suikoden series, Fencer Musashi, Legend of Dragoon, Shadow Hearts, Alundra, Vandal Hearts, Shining series, Xenosaga, Star Ocean (earlier games), Lunar series.
Grandia 1 is the best in terms of story, character and plot. The only thing that I hate about it is the amount of grind that you have to do to unlock all the skills. It's the only RPG I played that really feels that you're an adventurer in an adventure. Grandia 2 has a good story but suffers from a badly written dialog but it has good leveling mechanic.
Yeah, I couldn't finish Xtreme as well... As far as my taste goes I really liked the 3rd one, I might be the only one judging by the comments, but something in the plot may actually clings to me. Well, the initial tutorial part anyway, very heartwarming. Also it was the very first one for me. Love-love!
do you still miss Miranda? i do
@@mcclintick Yeah, the saddest\sweetest moment of the game.
I'm playing Grandia III for the first time right now, ten hours in and loving it.
With the exception of Parallel Trippers, which I've never played, and having to build up the resource needed to use skills in Grandia Xtreme, the battle system in all of the other Grandia games is actually identical.
While I know it had a different name than whatever it was called in the later games, being able to move your characters around the battlefield to avoid attacks has been there since the original Grandia.
I think it was just called "Move" and it let you pick from various spots on the battle map to move your characters to.
It is not a feature added in a Grandia 2 as you assumed.
Grandia is one of my top 10 favorite RPGs of all time, so I can't sit back and hear misinformation spread about it lol
Movement was tied to the “defense” action. You could either evade or endure an attack, it works identical to how you described it
I've only played the first two games, and the second one only recently-- the first was the game that my family had when I was growing up, and so because it was a part of my childhood it'll always have a special place in my heart. Still, I did really enjoy the second one, although I was tripping out because it was so similar to, and yet so different from, the first one.
just got the collection on switch didnt even kno there was more games, dope!
I just got the Grandia HD collection Physical from Asia… I don’t know if I should open it
def gonna try to play 1 and 2 soon. I played through one on the PS1 but my save file got corrupted so i couldnt finish it
I finally get 1 and 2 out of my backlog recently with the switch version and I'm looking foward to play 3 ! the improvement seems really good !
I'd pass on 3. I recently owned it and sold it. It starts off well, but the second half is awful. Nothing like 1 and 2. I know Eric praises it, but trust me, it's not good, and not worth the price it is going for now.
3 intro song gets very annoying and it plays in many cutscenes
Very well-done video, even if I strenuously disagree with your assessment of Grandia II. You really laid out what makes each installment of the series stand out from the rest.
Nice list!!!! Need ranking of all PlayStation1/2/3/4 turn based jrpg with commentary!!!!!!
I would like a US retail release of 1 and 2. Of the 4 games I played my rank would be from last to best: Xtreme, 3, 2 and 1. I liked growing the the spells through use like in 1 more than just allocating points, as it made you try all of your skills. And 1 was actually the second one I played, as I got into the series with the grandia 2 on dreamcast.
I got traded a japanese Dragonair card for Grandia II because a buddy of mine didn't like it. Grandia II is equally as good as Skies of Arcadia on Dreamcast. I couldn't believe that they managed to fit such a large game with voice acting on one GD-ROM.
I hope they bring extreme and 3 in a remaster collection like they did with the first two recently
We only got 1 and 2 here in the UK sadly. And out of those I loved 1 the most although 2 is fantastic as well. The original was one of the best RPG adventures I have experienced.
you said it man. Adventure. It's the purest feeling we can hope to have when playing an RPG. Actual adventure.
Agree. 1 is the best. More than 20 years ago, after original FFVII i craved for more RPG and i played Grandia, what a great time in my life.
I played the Switch version. I beat the first boss but it's been a while so I wouldn't know where to go.
Grandia III would be my favorite if not for the song that plays in Baccula... that sound still gives me nightmares.
I miss grandia games, i hope they release a new game any time soon or even remake the classic ones (my favorite is Grandia Xtreme, probably because it was the first one i played back in ps2, but grandia 2 is so great)
Greetings Grandia fans, I have news. If you're interested in hearing from the original voice cast? The voice of FEENA & LILLY (Angela Anderson) is doing a live interview on Twitch March 27th! Full details can be found here (www.reddit.com/r/grandia/comments/t9lzz5/voice_of_feena_lilly_to_do_a_live_interview_on/) and my previous interviews are here on my channel! Much love
Very mature and professional of you to put 2 higher than 3 in the list for the admitted reasons. I played both and 3's gameplay felt pretty solid, but yeah those difficulty spikes make me play in bursts than smoothly.
But 2 grips me so hard with its story, a world where god not only lost the battle against the devil, but died too, leaving Only the devil and these people have to live in a world where the devil will return. That overarching idea is pretty gripping from the base.
This enlightened to the fact there were more than 2 grandias in the world. Had absolutely no idea there were 5 more????
Also Grandia 1 was on the Saturn! I didn't even know it was on the Playstation til this either...lol
Your order of the games is the same as mine.
I love the first game, but in the end ,I prefer replay the 3rd one
So glad these came to Steam. Still hoping for Grandia 3 haha. Oh and Disgaea 3 too.
love that orinal fate poster
I've only ever played Grandia 1 and I loved it. I still have my PSX copy.
I had a double disk burned copy of Grandia 2 for the dreamcast and I have to say it's my all time favorite RPG of all time, disk 2 was corrupted so I was always renting the game from time to time, to finish it. Love that game, RIP to the series and creator.
Played 1, 2, and 3 and every one of them was great.. I still remember Raven, Mareg and Melfice strong moments..
Thanks
I would say worst to best xtreme, 3, 2, 1.
I'd say they are all pretty good just Extreme was....meh.
Was a little disappointed that Grandia only ranked 3rd, BUT to my defense never got the chance to play Grandia 3 so I digress xD Though I totally agree with Grandia 2 taking the top spot. It had such a hooking story and that battle theme was always hype, never got tired of that!
Grandia 2 was my memorable favorite and has some bad ass battle system soundtracks
That's exactly how I'd rank them, too. Great video.
Grandia extreme was my second favorite
After playing grandia and grandia 2 I bought xtreme as soon as I knew about it. I remember playing and finishing it and thinking, what that's it? I was disappointed because as much as I enjoy grandias battle system, it was the story that kept me engaged...
Grandia extreme is my favorite one. I wish it was on steam
Loved Grandia 2 I still listen to the soundtrack that came with the game😊
Grandia 1 and 2 are the best to me. . . Grandia 2 is extremely challenging though very rewarding.
Was praying Grandia 2 got a high rank.
It is my favorite Jrpg combat system. Spent hours grinding the optional map. Speedrun the strong monsters over and over. Fought Valmar..used power seeds and one shotted Valmar with a Tenseiken Slash. My jaw dropped..😅
I really like Grandia 2. Haven't finished it yet. After that I will play Grandia for the PS1
Overall, I like the 1st Grandia the best, due to memories, its battle system (which has you changing weapons to learn all skills), & its simpler story, focused on "adventure" at 1st, but then builds into something not so predictable. G2 is my 2nd fave (but my favorite story-wise), and G3 my 3rd. After that, I have Extreme, but it just didn't keep me hooked, because it's more challenge- than story driven. So I Iost interest. I'd love a Grandia 4, but, well, that'll likely never happen, due to Miyaji's passing.
Oh, and P.S. -- Some of the voice acting in Extreme was atrocious.
I have 1 2 and 3. I haven't played 3 yet though
I get it man. Grandia III is my favorite too regardless of the cheese factor.
I play grandia alot in the past I hope square enix do a remake in full 3d like what they did on ff7
The first Grandia is the best imho. Next to the second etc...
grandia extreme, beat the game long ago, so hard coz i played the japanese version, just relying on trial and error.. farm the lucky mink for months just to lvl most character to 140 above, then beat zenotlee.. now i can't believe i beat this freaking hard game 🎯
grandia 3 is my favorite
i wish they made a remastered on steam
I need grandia 3 ported to modern platforms.
Man, I need to get into Grandia 3 soon.
No~ you don't~ it's a joke in my opinion, a spit in the face of the orginal. The only "good" thing about it is it's graphics~ ; hell the game wasn't even completed, missing all kinds of game play~ don't waste your time and act like it doesn't exist~
no, there is better game out there.
@John Hicks yes, it is a Fact that grandia 3 sucks the most out of the series~
@John Hicks can you give me a reason as to why and how is 3 overall better than the first¿~
GRANDIA 1 is the best out of all! PERIOD
My favorite Grandia is the first, then second, Xtreme and third one. I did enjoy most of the first one even it was clearly rushed on some moment but every game does have their flaws. Second game is then dark game overall and pretty much opposite idea from first game which I liked some moments but overall not really compare to how first game did with theme overall. Xtreme was lot of fun and some real difficulty but not too hard really but it just goes too long and especially some dungeons were too long and empty. Grandia 3 is then something that they really tried to add all kind of things and go back to first game with some themes but kinda failed. Battle system is good but little bit sloppy on some moments and not that interesting overall as I could not really finish it.
Grandia 2 definitely is number 1. Great dark story and improved combat from the 1st game. Grandia 3 has a very lacking story.
Wat.. Grandia 1 was AMAZING. One of the best games ever. Grandia 2 was.. Garbage. I struggled to keep interest in it long enough to finish it and it actually made me not even want to check out #3.
Before watching your video Erick London.... I was expecting to find something.... Something hidden.. Something that could be smelled and seeing at miles of distance... something not to rare this days, and after all when it comes to games... In every single one of this seven games I tried, tried so hard to strip down every detail in each one of this games... Music, Graphics, Gameplay.... I was almost there, in the verge of get it on.. But for little, just little to nothing I did not find what I was looking for..... I did not find any................
.....................................UTTER TRAAAAAASHHHHHHHH!!!!!
I love Grandia III! Such a fun battle system.
The First Grandia is my favourite game it´s also my first grandia I played^^ grandia 2 is also great and grandia 3 i have to play it soon :D I love the battle system of grandia 1 at most :)
If Grandia III followed the story of Miranda and Alonso instead the kids it would have been my favorite JRPG of all time. A Grandia game about a young mom dealing with her son going off and becoming an adventurer while also rediscovering her own love of adventure while sailing around the world with a gambling addicted beastman sailor would have been way more interesting than whatever Grandia III was actually about.
Grandia2 soundtrack evolves us deeply into the story, and also charismatic characters. Grandia 3 has a linear story btw, but better graphic and cinematic scenes
had the first contact with xtreme, really enjoyed the game.
I love ALL these games
I just love Grandia 2. To me is the best in the series as well.
7:10 You're butchering explanation of the character Millennia >.
If there will be Grandia 4 I hope Mullen and Leen become playable. And they parrallel trip to past Icarian fall.
3 was not a bad game by any means, but I liked more the magic system on 1 and the story on 2. Of the 3 i played, i would rank them 3, 1 and 2.
Grandia 2 is my favorite in the series. I thought 3 wasn't that great because it was really short compared to 1 an 2
erick i need a rank of Super Robot War series XD is titanic job i now but i tink is nesesary hahah
I would put Grandia 1 above 3. Just finished 3 a week ago and was absolutely baffled by how half-baked the plot and cast were. I was waiting for Yuki's mom and Alonso to pop back into the story the whole game, but they never did! His mom wasn't even around to take care of her grandson which was really weird. Even one of the villain generals just evaporates from the story late into the game for no reason. It's like they ran out of money 3/4 along the way and just wrapped everything up. Very shocked and disappointed at the otherwise decent entry.
Grandia Xtreme with a PS2? Use a Battery UPS as save points are scarce. These devs were crazy...
for me Grandia 2 and 3 tied for first for me and can't decide which is better.
Grandia 2-
Better Cast of Characters
High Level Techniques had the best animation style
Better Story
Better Battle UI
Better Soundtrack overall
Better dinner table skits
Grandia 3-
Better character Models
Techniques animations consistently good
Better Cutscenes
Airplane Mode helped made the game feel almost like an open world game despite it being linear
Better Menu UI
roaming camera isn't as clunky.
Better opening theme
I agree to the haters of Grandia 3.
The short story content (20 to 25 hours only) and the lack of side quest really hurts the game!
BUT Grandia 3 battle system is the Best Turn Base even to this day 2021!
@Erick
Dude~ I almost unsubscribed because of your opinion on 3...
Hmm, I played Grandia Extreme not too long ago, the difficulty didnt really feel any different than Grandia 2 or 3. Never understood why people claim that one is hard.
Grandia 1 the best by far for me great story easily 50h game whit nice side quest. Grandia 2 is good game but is overated for me, common this game is 20-25h, ultra easy whit no side quest, ok story .
