Imagine what it was like when there wasn't a 17 foot seawall during the Galveston hurricane of 1900. 6000-12,000 people died on that island during that hurricane which had at least a 16 foot storm surge.

Look up Sin-Killler Griffin singing the earliest recorded version of "Wasn't that a Mighty Storm" to hear the closest thing to a first hand account of the 1900 event.

I was in kindergarten when the storm hit, I remember my teacher saying we were gonna go home, but we had to stack our chairs and desks, I remember putting all the books, folders, and supplies on the reading loft. I thought we were going on vacation, but when we got home, my uncle's boat was on the causeway, and I remember getting oreos from red cross......

Well the thing is the seawall cracked during ike that's why the water was covering houses which has never been since the 1900 and they didn't even have a seawall then...i lived there during ike and I don't recall being excited like these people are on this video...i thought we were going to die...imagine being on the top of your roof at night and you see boats going by saying write your social security number on your arms.... they stated that rescue was coming but nobody came and 911 didn't work....in the end...money, your looks, your followers, NOTHING matters but to live or die....thank GOD he saught different for our lives but it changed my bother who killed his gf few years later after ike...we think he went into bad PTSD from IKE... I pray everyday that nobody else ever have to experience what we did....unfortunately allot of our neighbors weren't so lucky.....we even saw HUGE boats tumbled over on top of houses....these Were the things NOT shown on the news....they didn't want to frighten anyone I gues....but I left shortly after that...lived there all my life and to see this brings back horrid memories...i wonder what's the status of the guys shooting this video!!!! Because this was before the eye hit us then....keep GOD FIRST .GOD BLESS whomever is reading this

im from galveston..and still live here to this day. i remember ike like it was yesterday. my family and i evacuated to San Antonio till the the storm passed. Nobody was allowed back for two weeks. when we got back it was like something from a movie truly disturbing. the house i lived in was completely gone! only a downstairs toilet remained attached to the foundation. Everything i owned was gone. Everyone's house was destroyed. no stores open, no gas stations open no restaurants open. nothing for at least a month. its a crazy feelin when u cant go to a store buy food or anything. ppl ate food from red cross vans driving around. trucks that had built in washer machines. tents set up with food lines. the ppl looked helpless. thousands homeless. Including myself. i will never forget time ike came.

Well, there's the ferry to Bolivar which shuts down during storm surge, and Bolivar isn't safe anyway, and there's the San Luis bridge, which is unsafe to get to and takes you to other unsafe places. BTW, if you are evacuating I recommend Brenham on 290 as an alternative to anywhere on I-10 heading to San Antonio. And If Brenham is full, there is Giddings; and Elgin, Manor, and Austin are not that far.

Amazing footage! WOW! Great work... Your brave to be out there. Thanks!
I live in Houston my House was built in 1920 so its pier and beam. In the hight of the storm I got up to go to the bathroom. I was amazed because the water in the toilet was sloshing around like I was on a ship. And I'm an hour drive from Galveston up Hwy. 45.
The wind was strong like that for at least 6 hours. Things were slamming into the house all night long.. Crazy feeling....
The next day every house, every car was covered in green leaves from the big trees in Houston that are everywhere. Every square inch of my car was covered and fire ants got in the car through the seals looking for shelter. It was WILD! I can't imagine going through the storm in Galveston. God bless all those who lost their lives and their families. It was a tragic event for Texas..

      Very simple really,
People that live in fear will never understand people that live for the thrill, as much as the people that live for the thrill don’t understand people that live in fear.
We’re all going to die, worrying means you care how long you live, not worrying means making the most of what little time you have!
So don’t feel like you need to call names for people like me, if I die doing it I’m happy, long boring life is more scarier to me!

I remember July 4, 2009 my family and I went to Galvaston to celebrate the fourth of July. We stayed at a pier hotel (now its known as pleasure pier) I was little and don't remember much except that the weather was starting to look bad and we had to go home. Later, we found out what happened to the hotel.

The seawall actually seems to be very effective.

Imagine being there in September 1900, without the sea wall and the whole island considerably lower, without recording or forecasting equipment.
