- Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #16: Fourth Basic Bossa Nova Phrase Variation Reversed (3113)
in:
Aquarela do Brasil (Ary Barroso - arranged by João Gilberto)
as played by João Gilberto with participation of Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil and released on album Brasil in 1981.
This video is accompanied by subtitles that explain the various playing details throughout the song. It is recommended to set the CC/subtitles size to 100% in RUclips player settings.
Guitar accompaniment is almost entirely based on two variations of Partido Alto phrase: 2113 and 3113. Pay special attention to string muting in 3113 phrase, where all beats except beats 4 and 10 are played with staccato. At the other hand the phrase 2113 is played entirely with legato.
Though rhythmic phrases are relatively simple, playing this song is somewhat tricky due to following reasons:
1. Rhythmic phrase starts with two beats, followed by a missing strong beat. If there is any tempo modification in playing those first beats it will be multiplied by 4 before the next strong beat of the phrase. This may eventually lead to an unintentional tempo fluctuation. For the same reason the songs that use those phrases usually start with an intro sequence of several strong beats that serve to establish a stable tempo.
2. Playing legato in combination with relatively fast tempo makes chords changes quite challenging. In this situation it makes sense to revise usual chord fingering to prepare for chord transitions. There are multiple such fingerings in this video, those are indicated in subtitles.
There are two chord replacements, Dmaj7 at 1:29 replacing D6 as it was originally played by João and Em7 at 2:03 instead of Em9. For the song closing I chose several variations of the same I-ii-V-I chord progression, some of them were played by João on different occasions.
Please note there is a mistake in a chord diagram at 2:47 - it should indicate the 6th fret instead of the 7th fret.
Enjoy playing Aquarela do Brasil!

wow are there ads on youtube?
no i wont. music should be free and non commercial
This is the greatest video ever published on RUclips
And this is the greatest comment ever posted. Thank you very much!
I love the format of these tutorials. Extremely well done. Thank you for creating this. Now I can learn some of my favorite songs of all time.
I'm a roots Gilberto guy who plays an acoustic on picnic tables
I love you guys here dearly for knowing what it is!
Agree. The best lesson Ive ever seen
greatest video ever .- :D
I have an electric guitar and I’m learning how to play rock music, but bossa nova is the most peaceful and calming music to my ears. Bossa nova guitar is my favorite
Glad you like it! Thanks!
I am 68 and increasinlgly find I love bossa nova. If you are young I recommend bossa nova. Your fingers are strong and your mind learns fast. It takes longer at my age. I have three electric guitars and never play them though I will be playing bossa nova on my fairly new semi-hollow body Ibanez which I bought just for bossa nova. You can play bossa nova on an electric guitar and it will be easer to get sounds from the chords.
To hell with learning it. I'll just sit back and enjoy your playing! Outstanding tutorial. Thank you so much!
You're welcome. Thank you for such a nice comment.
If I could make this my ringtone, I would never answer my phone! Beautiful!
You just gave me the idea :) Thanks for your comment.
To me, Bossa Nova is a beautiful sunset in the beach with your lover made music. I can't get enough of it.
Nicely put. Thank you for your post.
This is by far the best guitar teaching video I have seen. Super nice display of information, no unnecessary repetitions and no voice over. Love it!
That's very kind, thank you!
This is so well done! The only thing I regret, is that this didn't exist when I was 16 and had infinite amount of time to practice! Thanks you very much. I'm learning a lot from your videos.
Me too. That's why I did that so that other people can learn what I did while transcribing these songs. Stay tuned, there will be more. Thanks for your input.
Never knew that bossa nova was so much fun to play, thanks!
Sure it is! Thanks a lot!
Aquarela do brasil is so beautiful and so special. There is something so bouncy, and mystifying about it... These chords, this rhythm. Magic.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Muito obrigado, abraços do Brasil, é uns dos melhores canais para aprender musicas Brasileiras. :D
Jesus te conduza irmão
Valeu!
@@bossanovaguitar tu é brasileiro??
@@fabriciuscaesar4348 não.
There’s a mistake at 2:46 when the Bm/A is supposed to be at the 7 fret and the video says 8. What an amazing video, I’ve been studying it for a week and just got to that part. Thank you so much for such an amazing content.
Glad you like it!
Wow! Quite challenging. Thank you very much for showing strictly the tempo and structure of the genious João Gilberto.
Muito Obrigado por mostrar a genialidade nos acordes e ritmos tal qual são tocados pelo brilhante João Gilberto.
O Brasil te agradece
Que bom, obrigado!
Thank you so much! My daily routine is to learn all your videos! I wanted to go lesson by lesson but Im gonna jump straight to this one before continuing hahah. You make me learn so quickly and easily. I learned some bossa songs before knowing about your channel.. But once I discovered it, I understood how rough I was with the rhythm. It is something we cannot joke with, all the little details matter to make it sound seriously good. Thank you again, your videos value more than gold!
You're welcome! Thank you for your nice comment.
If you learn this song many of the others on this channel are extremely accessible. I think this is one of the more challenging to learn, but undoubtedly the most rewarding once you have it down. It's just as fun to play (well) as it is to watch him play it.
@@Chalup4 Thanks it motivates me to continue! Because this D6 played with the open B string is such a nasty one! It's possible to learn roughly and adapt the positions but it would be shamefull, I couldn't look at people in the eyes. I couldn't sleep well and I wouldn't die in peace xD hahah
@@quincyfreysinger6894 Yeah I'd recommend getting the four D chords down really well as they are pretty much every Joao song on this channel :P don't sweat it, just take your time in letting your tendons heal and over time it won't be as painful to work with.
Sounds like a little story, a journey with its many chords following each other in so simple, natural and yet charming way. And the wonder is how the singing goes along with this music- they are so different, but finally an amazingly sounding song is born.
Thank you for your work, it s very helpful.
I agree, the rhythm of the melody often complements the rhythm played by guitar accompaniment. Thank you for your post.
Wow, this channel should be more popular. Beautiful and easy to understand. No need for small talk. Perfect vibe
It will be, I promise :) It's still relatively new and in development. Thanks for your nice post and stay tuned...
Brasil meu Brasil brasileiro
Mulato inzoneiro
Vou cantar-te nos meus versos
Brasil, samba que dá
Bamboleio, que faz gingar
O Brasil do meu amor
Terra de nosso Senhor
Abre a cortina do passado
Tira a mãe preta do cerrado
Bota o Rei Congo no congado
Canta de novo o trovador
A merencória à luz da Lua
Toda canção do seu amor
Quero ver essa dona caminhando
Pelos salões arrastando
O seu vestido rendado
Esse coqueiro que dá coco
Oi onde amarro a minha rede
Nas noites claras de luar
Por essas fontes murmurantes
Onde eu mato a minha sede
Onde a Lua vem brincar
Oh esse Brasil lindo e trigueiro
É o meu Brasil brasileiro
Terra de samba e pandeiro
Brasil Terra boa e gostosa
Da morena sestrosa
De olhar indiferente
Brasil, samba que dá
Para o mundo se admirar

Abre a cortina do passado

I've been wanting to learn this song for ages and today it finally happened. Thank you so much 💓
Glad to help. Thanks for your post!
I was waiting for this video since youtube exist.. thanks
Hope it helps. Thank you for posting here.
Never stop doing what you do! So grateful for all the hard work you've put into these videos.
Thank you!
I finally played the entire song start to finish. Thank you so much for sharing this video. You have no idea how much it means to me.
Glad you find it useful and thanks!
Gosh, how long did it take?
@@DumbassFuckyou It’s hard to say exactly. The song isn’t necessarily difficult to play through once you memorize the chords, but playing it as perfectly as the guitarist in this video is another story. I still find myself accidentally muting strings or taking too long to transition from one chord to the next.
This was the song that got me into Bossa Nova. I'm still learning It! Thanks so much very helpful
Glad I could help! Thank you!

One day... I will be able to play this haha!
Excellent, just keep that attitude and you most certainly will. Thanks for your comment.
bossanovaguitar Thank YOU for giving me the chance to learn it :-) Greetings from Germany
You're welcome. Thanks for your interest in bossa nova.
Have you played it yet?
Thank you so much for this. It's so clear and authentic and inspirational.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I wish I could play the guitar like this one day, it just sounds beautiful and it hits right in the feels. Great job!
Of course you can man, it only takes some time and effort. I wanted to learn this song a couple of years ago but it seemed so out of reach then.
Today I learned it rather quickly to my surprise. Only thing left to do is practice and enjoy 🤟
Exactly! Thanks for the posts!
I gave up learning this. The chord changes rapidly in such a fast BPM. But that's what makes this song good. Props to you and João Gilberto.
Never give up! If I can do it, surely you can too. Try to start with the slower tempo and let me know if I can do anything to help you. Good luck and thanks for your post.
I love your channel. There's a lack of BossaNova content in portuguese, but I'm glad that I found your channel. I'll such a newbie when it comes to play like that, but I'll work hard to learn this song... I need to preserve my country culture, and also be proficient at the guitar, because it can't just be just a decoration for my wall.
Aguardo mais conteúdos vindo de ti, meu caro!
Thank you very much!
Thank you so much! now i can play aquarela do brasil for my performance!!
Great to hear that. I hope you'll enjoy playing it as well as I do. Thanks for your post.
Very tough work! Congratulations! Now I have quite some busy work on perspective. All those chordal variations and nuances are tastefully executed. The quintessence of Brazil is in this song.
Thank you very much!
thank you so much!! I've been trying to learn this for months now but all the tutorials out there are either from other versions of the song or are innacurate. yours is the only one that is one to one from the original
Enjoy! Thanks a lot for your comment!
Muchas gracias x su tiempo
De nada!
Brilliant tutorial,
I just learned to play the song and I'm even not a guitar player but drummer.... Thank you so much!

The chord voicings are on point! Killin!
Thanks to João Gilberto. Thank you very much!

Amazing video - small correct to your tab. The E7/9 and Bm/A (~2:44) are transcribed a half step too high! You play correctly of course, thank you for this amazing resource!
Tus vídeos son increíbles, hasta me dieron ganas de comprar una guitarra española para tocar bossanova

There's no reason you can't, just be patient and persistent, and start with easier songs, like Insensatez or Garota de Ipanema. Thanks for posting.

Thank you very much and good luck with your playing.
This is the best Bossa Nova/Guitar instruction I have ever seen. Do you give (or sell) pdf's with tabs/chords for your arrangements?

This is so perfect lol he plays it exactly how it’s played in the recording I’m in love my guy.
Of course it doesn't have to be played exactly like this, but I wanted to show how J.Gilberto did it. Thanks you very much for your comment.

Hey there is an error from min 2:45 to 2:47, E7 / 9, Bm / A and Em9 must be traversed 1 fret.
Yes, the error is in the chord diagram, it should be 5th instead of the fret. I put the correction in the description section. Thanks for your input.
So glad you have a tutorial for this gem. I clicked on the link for the full lesson text but it leads to an empty page. Where can I find it?
Full score sheet is available on my Patreon account.
I will get this
this is so nice~
Thanks a lot!
thank u so much u.u

In the minute 2:46 is on the 7th fret, not in the 8th. The rest is asome, nice work!
Thank you! This typo is documented in the desricption of the video.
