  • Just outside of BNSF Calwa Yard in Fresno, CA, there is a large industrial park that is home to dozens of industries, most of which are served by rail. Each day, BNSF runs a local freight train to service each industry, which is typically operated by BNSF #506, an ex-ATSF B40-8W in fresh 'H4' paint. B40-8Ws, unlike other GE Dash 8s, have four axles instead of six. BNSF is the only class I railroad that operates B40-8Ws, having 60 of them on their roster, many of which can be operated by remote control and are exclusively used on locals.
On the afternoon of Monday, July 29th, 2019, I drove to Calwa Yard hoping to catch BNSF #506 working at the industrial park. I arrived just as the train finished up its work for the day, but I managed to chase it as it ran light back to the fuel pad. I got it crossing East Annandale Avenue and South Maple Avenue before calling it a day. Thanks for watching!

I believe most of the B40-8s in BNSF's fleet have recently been equipped with remote controls and have replaced older EMD locomotives on local freights such as the one shown here.

I've read the BNSF engineers absolutely hate switching with these things.

@@adventuresofamtrakcascades301 Crews have NEVER liked any type of four axle Dash-8. The ride rough, and I think I heard that they load slow compared to a similar EMD.
