    Thank you!! I was a freshmen in 1996 and the kid who we drove to school with’s girlfriend had this record on and got me hooked. I was already into NOFX and The Offspring. Simon’s playing is absolutely incredible , a big influence on me as a bass player. He never gets his due, thank you 🙏 for this awesome video.

    This is a great list. I'm super into bass heavy punk. I don't even play instruments, but I've always gravitated to the sound of bass. 88 Fingers Louie is another good band for bass. I would also add the first Rise Against album, The Unraveling.

      Thanks for the comment! Bass heavy punk is the best! Everyone always talks about 88 Fingers Louie... I've never really listened to them, I guess I'm going to have to. I had a feeling that London Calling, Wolves, Dookie (I would also add When I Come Around and Welcome to Paradise as other standout tracks) and Blink would be on here (my guess was Enema of the State), love all of them but some other people I’d like to shout out would be 13 Songs by Fugazi, The Sufferer and the Witness by Rise Against and Smash by The Offspring

    • @PickTheBass
      @PickTheBass  4 дня назад

      Thanks for the comment. Those albums are considered "the greats" for a reason, for sure. I've always preferred Take Off Your Pants and Jacket to Enema, I know I'm the odd one out there. I think the songs are better, the bass playing is better, and the bass tone is also better. I never really got into Fugazi, but Rise Against is great. The Offspring were one of the bands that nearly made it on the list, but I would have picked Ixnay on the Hombre... even though they are just about the same to me. I hope you subscribed, you won't want to miss out on what's coming up!

      Thanks for the comment. That isn't really the era that I'm into... go with what you know, right? For the most part, my favorite 80's punk bands are The Descendents, Bad Religion, and Dead Kennedys... unless you count later 80's and then I'd include Operation Ivy and Nofx. I also love The Clash, The Misfits, The Sex Pistols, and The Ramones... but I think of them as 70's bands. I hope you subscribed so you don't miss what's coming up!

      @Milo-it1tf 4 дня назад +1

      @@PickTheBass I like misfits to, but to me I only like 70’s to 2000’s punk music, minus pop punk, that’s not really my thing, I like more of hardcore punk and stuff like that, I just feel that after those years punk music has been getting stale, I acknowledge that it’s still around, but now it’s kind of mainstream, and that’s everything that punk was against, the genre at its core is about anti establishment, anti corporate greed, and individuality

    • @PickTheBass
      @PickTheBass  4 дня назад

      I get that... in the early 2000's I was in a band that was on a great label and doing great tours... I didn't like our music and didn't believe in us, and it's part of why I left right in the middle of everything I thought I had ever wanted. That being said, I think a band like Nofx is as punk as it gets, and there are lots of bands from the 90's that I think were punk as an ethic and mindset. Making money from being in a band is not the same thing as selling out, and it's honestly super cool to see some of the bands I love make enough money to live a nice life while still staying "punk".

    MH on top! Also adore marks use of the bass vi on some songs. I made a "custom" bass vi by putting bass vi strings on a guitar I had, Mark is such an awesome influence on 3 piece bands with bassist who can sing and also convey such awesome melodies. Any reason on pants and jacket of enema or untitled? More of a my chem and fall out boy guy myself but do love some blink

    • @PickTheBass
      @PickTheBass  11 дней назад

      At some point I will have to get a Bass VI... he really uses it better than just about anyone. When I was young, I loved Mark for his voice and songwriting, and really just his personality. I didn't realize what a great and innovative bassist he was until much later. I wish I played like him more, but we hear the bass quite differently. I honestly love every Blink album from Dude Ranch on, but TOYPAJ has always been my favorite. I love the mix of silly pop with a bit more gritty punk. I think it's them at their best. It sits perfectly between the 2 sounds of Enema and Self Titled. I was never really into the music of bands like My Chem or Fall Out Boy... that was the time that I was performing and touring, and while I had a great time with a lot of those dudes (those 2 bands in particular were a great time) and they are all super talented, I played the style of music because it's what people did at the time, but I always loved 90's punk. I wish I had been able to play that style, but by the time I started getting out there around 2000, everyone wanted to hear Emo.

      I get that, but I like the way Mark uses it creatively to add on top of a 4 string bass... The Beatles would use the VI because it was more comfortable for John and George... so not really the same thing. Either way, I'm down.

    1st of all I assume all these Punk Bands on your list in this video, the Bass Players are "Pick Players" I presume. Otherwise, they wouldn't be on this list? LOL. Great video idea I loved it.
    2nd of all regarding your list and the order of your list... It is your list and you like what you like. I wouldn't change a thing. Some of the bands you mentioned like The Ramones but you didn't add to this list, I was going to add to my supplemental list below. But I figure since you mentioned a lot of good bands like the Ramones that I already mentioned as Honorable Mentions, I figure, I would just make my list, of bands that you did not mention at all to add to your already great list.
    Now how you did your list as I understand it, was you picked one album from each band and highlighted a few songs from that album. For most of these bands, it was hard to pick one album, and when I chose an album finally, it was hard to pick just a few songs. But in keeping with the format of your list, I made sure everything was Punk, Ska, and bass-related, so I will not list which bands are just Punk, Ska, etc. But if you know the band, you can figure it out, and if not, then one listen will do it for you. Like your list, my ratio of Punk and Ska may be as even as yours. So here are my 10 additions to your list in my order. Also, all my Bassists listed in these bands should be Pick Players I think. LOL.
    10) Band: Labwagon - Album: Trashed 1994 - Songs: Know It All, Give It Back, Rust, Brown Eyed Girl - Basist: Jesse Bulgilone - Equipment: ???
    9) Band: (88) Eighty-Eight Fingers Louie - Album: Back On The Streets (Remixed and Remastered) 2019 - Songs: Skate, Two Faced Bastard, Newspaper, Punk Rock Rulebook, 100 Proof - Bassist: Joe Principe - Equipment: ???
    8) Band: Less Than Jake - Album: Losing Streak 1996 - Songs: Happyman, Sugar In Your Gas Tank, Shindo - Basist: Roger Lima - Equipment: Pictures show Roger with a 3 band EQ regular 1 pickup active Stingray. No idea about Amps.
    7) Band: Circle Jerks - Album: Golden Shower Of Hits 1983 - Songs: High Price on Your Head, Product of My Environment, Rats of Reality, Junk Mail - Bassist: Zander Schloss - Equipment: P-Bass. No idea about Amps.
    6) Band: The Dead Milkmen - Album: Beelzebubba 1988 - Songs: I Walk The Thinnest Line, Sri Lanka Sex Hotel, Punk Rock Girl, Bleach Boys, Ringo Buys a Riffle - Bassist: Dave Shulthise - Equipment: Maybe a Stingray Bass? No idea about Amps.
    5) Band: The Offspring - Album: Smash 1994 - Songs: Bad Habit, Gotta Get Away, What Happened to You? - Bassist: Greg K - Equipment: P Bass. Not sure about Amps.
    4) Band: Real Big Fish - Album: Turn The Radio Off 1996 - Songs: Join the Club, Beer, S.R., All I Want Is More, I'll Never Be - Basist: Current: Derek Gibbs - Equipment: Jazz Bass. Not sure about Amps.
    3) Band: Dead Kennedys - Album: Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables 1980 - Songs: California Uber Alies, Holliday in Cambodia, Viva Las Vegas - Basist: Klaus Flouride - Equipment: P Bass. Not sure about Amps.
    2) Band: Bad Religion - Album: The New America 2000 - Songs: Whisper In Time, There Will Be A Way, Let It Burn, The Fast Life - Basist: Jay Bentley - Equipment: P Bass. Amps, Marshal, or Mesa Boogie? I am not sure. Possibly Mesa Cab and Marshal's head?
    1) Band: The Ex-Idols - Album: Social Kill 1994 - Songs: Wish I Never Heard Your Name, My Song, Going Down, The Real You - Basist: Sean E DeMott - Equipment: ???
    Well, I have a lot more I could have added, but I could only pick 10 bands, 1 album from each band, and so many songs from each album. All Bass, Punk, and Ska related. Not all of these bands are unfortunately together and making new music but what is recorded from those bands is still fantastic, and those that are together, still touring, creating new music, excellent.
    So how many of the above have you heard of? Go listen to any of the above you have not heard of if any, and let me know what you think. Specifically the songs I picked out as a starting point. If you know everything I have posted then let me know as well.
    If I really wanted to lengthen my comments, I would add comments to each band as you did in your video, or (here's a thought) make my own video. Maybe one day LOL. But for now, Enjoy, and until your next posted video - Cheers. 😀

      Thanks for the comment. I have a few videos that I'm working on now that will address finger style players, and genres that are not punk, so stay tuned. Lagwagon is one of my favorite bands ever, but Jesse plays finger style, so he wasn't on this list. I don't know what he recorded with, probably a P bass, but he usually played a Stingray live. Less Than Jake was on my list, and Roger is one of my favorite bassists, I just prefer the sound of the bass and really the songs in general on Hello Rockview to Losing Streak. I honestly love a lot of their newer albums as well. I think during Losing Streak he was still playing his Ibanez. I nearly put The Offspring on the list, but I would have gone with Ixnay on the Hombre over Smash. Greg likely used a P bass to record, but back then often played an Ibanez live. I love Reel Big Fish, and will likely address Matt Wong at some point... but he mainly plays with his fingers, and usually on a Stingray 5 string. I don't really love his tone, but it's perfect for the music. The Dead Kennedys are great, and Klaus is a great bassist, but he wasn't a huge influence on me. I believe he mostly used a Jazz bass. I really wanted to put Bad Religion on my list. They are one of my favorite punk bands, and Jay Bentley is a god. That being said, he really stays in a supporting role. His tone never really sticks out. He's incredible, but since my list was focused on tone, he didn't make the cut. I would have likely chosen Stranger Than Fiction... or Suffer. The rest of your bands I don't really listen to. I wish I liked 88 Fingers Louie and the Circle Jerks more, but I've never really put in the time. I will get around to it. I've never really put any time into the Dead Milkmen or the Ex-Idols, but I'll put them on the list. I'm so stoked that you are enjoying my content, I really enjoy the discussion... that's why I'm doing it. You should make your own videos, there's always room for one more!

      @@PickTheBass Like I said in my comments. I had to pick something. So I agree with you that some of my choices could have been better despite the cool bass lines of those songs. I also like (that I did not put on the list above, as honorable mentions; see if you know any of these bands (This list below is in no order)) are:
      The Stranglers, Hot Watter Music (Great Live - the Bassist plays a double Humberker 4 string Music Man Fingerstyle - No idea on Amps.), Streetlight Manifesto, TKL, AFI, Face To Face, Jawbreaker, Nomeinsni, Strung Out, The Suicide Machines, Pennywise, A Wilhelm Scream, Operation Ivy, Naked City, The Dickies, Iggy Pop (Great Live - Basist = P Bass with a Pick. No idea on Amps.), Murphy's Law (Great Live - Bassit = P Bass with a Pick. No idea on Amps), Reverend Horton Heat, Sick of It All (Great Live Basist = P Bass with a Pick. No idea on Amps), Social Distortion, The Hives, Dead Boys.
      I know I listed a lot of more bands and artists here for my honorable mentions LOL, but this is just my non-all-inclusive and in no order (as I could have added more) honorable mention Punk and Ska band listing to my additional 10 band list to your list. No idea if every Bassist in these bands are pick players but I am sure a few of them are. I noted on the bands/artists I saw live what the bassist was using. How many of these Bands/Artists on my Honorable Mentions list do you know and like?
      Also, I have been working on my own RUclips channel and content forever. Getting the right equipment and software, among other things, etc. It will have a mix of lots of things on it and Music and bass (not just Ska and Punk but still (and not just Pick Playing LOL)) will be a part of that. This for me will be something to do in my spare time as a fun; thing but I refuse to be pigeonholed if you will to one thing/topic on my channel. Meaning just Music or Just Bass or just one Genre or Music, etc. Yes, I will be talking about other things outside of Music as well on my channel. There might be videos on there maybe like this one as well, so instead of me leaving long comments on videos like this, I can just submit a link to the video I did on the same subject as a reply LOL. Who knows when I will have the channel up and ready but when I do you and everyone else will know.

      AFI also almost made it into this video. Face to Face is in the video. I honestly never liked Pennywise. A Wilhelm scream will end up in an upcoming video, I love them. Operation Ivy is one of my favorite, but Matt definitely refined himself a lot through Rancid. I love the Hives!
