At the same time, I wouldn't want my young daughter to be stretched at all by anyone, but especially by a man. It is best for women to do the physical corrections necessary when teaching young girls. People can argue all they want, but I would not want a grown man putting his hands on my daughter, touching her legs, pulling up on her thighs, etc. Nope. Not even of it is "gentle" stretching or correcting form. I've seen too much in my life.

I haven't watched - I don't need to see it - but thanks for highlighting how damaging forced stretching is. It shouldn't happen, ever. Joints need good integrity to stand up to a career in dance - and just to live a healthy life in general. Forced stretching destroys that integrity creating unstable joints, and unstable joints increase the risk of osteoarthitis, subluxations and dislocations, tissue tears and other painful joint problems that are not always resolvable. Not to mention that this kind of physical assault by an adult on a minor - because, let's be honest, that's what it is - causes emotional trauma. Many of these students will be left with PTSD.

    • @GodsSparrowSpeaks
      @GodsSparrowSpeaks 4 месяца назад +5

      I agree.
An adult forcibly holding a child down and instilling pain sets that child up for severe abuse let alone the severe conscious and subconscious trauma.
Cannot imagine having a healthy love life as an adult after being in that physical position while pain is forced upon oneself.

I watch this and... who am I kidding? I can't watch this. I'm a pediatrician with a background in Athletic Training and a Masters in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health. It's hard for me to understand how it could possibly even make sense that turn out comes from stretching, not from building strength. I struggle to understand how these teachers don't feel sick to their stomachs, knowing that they are harming their relationships with these children.
I was once talking to an older physician about the days when doctors claimed that newborns "didn't feel pain." She told me that there was this weird cognitive dissonance about it. The doctors who were training you -- who you literally had to rely upon to teach you how to keep patients alive -- told you in a completely matter of fact manner that infants can't feel pain. These were people who knew more than you about pretty much everything, and who you had the upmost respect for. In your heart or your gut or wherever you want to place it, you knew that infants felt pain. But if the people training you said that infants don't feel pain, you believed them that infants don't feel pain and didn't question it.

Little did I know that I was craving more endorphins because of having PSA severely with not one physician to listen to my symptoms and I diagnosed myself even though my records showed from 1973 rheumatological symptomology. Staying active helped but I have the worse form of it and it began in my early childhood- a little psoriasis and screaming painful leg pains, fevers of unknown origin and eye floaters until one day while teaching organic chem I felt like something crawled up my spine and the next symptom, crippling migraines no energy. I have to say that what I went through medically was far worse and still is and it shames me also because I helped push doctors through their boards while just working the floor, crazy. My body is literally a textbook for PSA and I just fired my rheumatologist for not knowing what he should know. I always loved my pediatric patients and all of them. Hang in there too!😊

I had a 9 year old ask me if I would push her down in her splits, which she must have learned from someone. Of course I refused and emphasized the message that we don't do that. This is shocking. Im so glad my mom didnt put me in those classes when I was young. I'm 53 and just found out this year that I have a congenital spine condition called Bertolotti syndrome. I had back pain since i was 10 years old, and it went undiagnosed by every doctor my mom took me to see. They said I was trying to get out of going to school! Or that I just didn't like PE class. At 27 a disc in my lower back totally ruptured and I have nerve damage in my leg from it. I still didn't get diagnosed with Bertolotti even though that's what caused it. I recently had an MRI for a different issue and the doctor saw that I have an extra vertabrate and it's unfused. That is Bertolotti! I finally had an explanation for so many decades of suffering.
Imagine if my mom had put me in those classes where they stretch the poor kids! I would have been permanently disabled by it. When kids say they have pain, please please dont tell them to push through it like I was told. I suffered so much from that mentality.

That is absolutely horrific! It is child abuse! I am trying to think of what to write without raging and using vile expletives, but it is near impossible! As a parent, you protect and defend your child from abuse, harm, and trauma until your last breath. To intentionally subject your child to what amounts to torture - vile and disgusting! It must be stopped!

Regardless of education, actively making a child cry in pain is abuse and we shouldn’t pretend that it isn’t. The solution is still eduction, but two types of education, what is abuse and what is best for the body.

No, those teachers know what they are doing. There is too many things to research and relearn so they DON'T do this. Saying they don't know better..just no. Also, when they see a child crying and writhing in pain? STOP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO THAT CHILD. They are crying for a reason! I'm sorry for yelling. It's just that how they are "teaching" is horrible and the "old ways" are barbaric. This is just my own opinion. I am so sorry that you, Josephine, went through is as well. 💔

Yep....yeah unfortunately even in America the overstretch method is a problem when I was growing up. Our teacher stopped if we started to cry but she would say push through the pain. I wasn't naturally flexible so I remember keeping my mouth shut when it hurt so much because I wanted so badly to be flexible like my other friends not realizing that our bodies are just different and that's okay. Gosh I hope my kid won't experience this. Hopefully the new research will be the philosophy used unlike in the 90s.

This kind of “stretching” is child abuse plain and simple. The children are screaming in pain and are far too young to be “pushing themselves”. This is an authority figure pushing their agenda on a precious child’s growing body. This causes unrepairable physical and emotional trauma. Even if these children do have professional dance careers, the risk of chronic pain is far too great. I treat far too many preteen children with chronic pain to not be extremely concerned about this. 😢 Thank you, Josephine, for bringing attention to this extremely important problem. 🙏🏻

I have “loosygoosy” joints, per all my medical cohort, tho not EDS (the husband is that zebra). Mine is likely related to my chronic pain (CRPS) and autoimmune disease, and one therapy is having my fascia scraped frequently, to help my everything relax from either locking so hard to hold joints steady or being beyond floppy. (It’s so fun!) My husband does the fascial release on my IT bands, and tears are pretty common… and he can barely get through that. And I’m a grown-ass woman. I cannot even imagine what must be wrong with someone that they can make children scream in pain like this, knowingly injuring them for life.

I had something similar to this happen when i was in gymnastics. I wasn't flexible enough in middle splits, so coach came over and just pushed down on my back. Something in my knee, ugh, it was gross, i felt something ripping inside. I was on the ice, anti-inflammatory drugs, wraps, crutches, for weeks. It eventually healed, sort of, but that knee has never been the same. To this day if i start to push a stretch a bit too far on the left, i feel that spot in my knee get that stabbing pain. Just, don't do this to kids. There are better ways to gain flexibility that don't come with the risk of lifelong injury.

I was trained like this in rhythmic gymnastics by my Russian coach. The worst to me was that we had to sit on each other's back leg while they were in a split with the front heel on a chair (around 1:22 what the girl in the back is doing with a bench, but with a chair and someone sitting on the back leg, hope it makes sense). I never sat too much because my friend would be CRYING !! Then I'd get yelled at for not sitting on her properly.
At 14, I twisted my ankle while training and had a severe sprain. My coach yelled at me to get back to training and stop being a baby. She refused to call my parents. I refused to train. I sat on a bench and waited until pick up time. My friends carried me to my parents car. I never went back to training.
I think I accepted this abusive situation because I was a kid and my parents were also abusive in many ways (they refused to get me medical attention for my sprain until they realized I couldn't go to school on all fours). But I said no that day and never looked back. I'm much older now and my mom has apologized for not getting me medical care back then.
I also suffered a neck injury and my training worsened the consequences of it. I'll have to live with it for my entire life.
I always tell parents that it's fine to let your child dance or do gymnastics, but be sure what they are up to in training !
