Just got a stomp XL today. I was making presets with the desktop app and it works really nice. Using just the unit is kinda confusing so I’ll def be using this
Do use hx edit to play around. But keep the quick reference card available. Play with the global settings (Adjust the USB input level first) and get used to the menu structure. Get familiarized with the terminology and words After a bit, try to build a simple patch and assign switches with just the UI on the stomp. Watch more videos. Try to recreate tones and effects setups from your favorite band and songs. Use the minotaur distortion on everything. Lmao
i got a stomp XL about a year ago. I reckon it is the perfect form factor and size for gigging. I added a midi controller for more switches and thats it.
Ryan. Great tutorial. The casual mention of one button for snapshot switch at about 3:30 (and then 19:50 or so) was worth the price of admission. Watched a ton of videos on snapshot mode and how to use it and none of them (I believe) mentioned this easy way to switch between different snapshots. Tx.
I see Gentle Hearts tour in the back. Tetsuo Sakurai is the reason i bought a 6 string bass. Greg Howe is (one of) the reasons i love fusion and is my favorite guitarist of all time. I met Dennis Chambers at a Victor Wooten show in Baltimore. He is from Baltimore, so he came to the show as a fan. Was just standing in the back. Was pretty sure no one else knew, then Victor literally says between songs, "I see my friend Dennis Chambers in the house back there".
Been rocking with an LT for the last 8 years or so but really want to transition to Stomp XL cuz it's form factor is perfect with just the right number of switches. I can just add an after market expression pedal and I will be set. But my lt is too beat up for me to milk out the fund for a new XL from it. Dang. Good video.
Can you create presets without choosing an amp+cab and just use your amps own distortion? Like create some presets that run through the pre amp and others after in the effects loop? With the 4 cable method, or what's the best way to use this with a tube amp that already has good distortion and you just want to add effects?
So the quick answer is yes you can - either the four cable method, or in an effect loop or just use it as a stand alone pedalboard. I used mine as a standalone pedalboard for a year going into a blues jr and had presets for different sounds
@@ryansnydercg thanks Ryan Ordered!!! btw i’m a new Stomp XL user and hugely appreciate your videos. I have a quad cortex and tone master pro that i use for recording, and was using a Headrush for live - but that has glitched on me a few times so trying the stomp for live because (even though it’s a little long in tooth tech-wise) sounds are great and it seems pretty bulletproof!!
Hi, do you have a video showing how to use the helix (I have a stomp xl) with an amp's effects loop? I want the Stomp's 'distortion effects' to go straight into the "front" of the amp but the 'delays and reverbs' to go into the amp's effects loop (no amp modeling desired) (I have a hand-wired Rivera Fender Concert amp w effects loop in back of it. awesome amp)
@@ryansnydercg Cody has one (on an old helix) but it's so long-winded/circuitous. What the internet needs is a nice concise "wham/bam" video tutorial on how to do what I described. (the line 6 "time effects" in amp effect loop and the line 6 "dirt/drives" in FRONT of the Amp) and the cabling involved. I've been looking for HOURS. The Stomp XL + tube amp's effect loop = "The Way".
So you want to setup the physical rig like this: 1. Guitar --> HX Stomp XL (Guitar Input) 2. HX Stomp XL (SEND) --> AMP (main input in front) 3. AMP (FX Loop Send) --> HX Stomp (Return L/MONO) 4. HX Stomp (OUPUT L/MONO) --> AMP (FX Loop Return ) *** Super important that the HX Stomp SEND to the front of amp is at instrument level. You do this within global settings *** *This is known as the four cable method* And setup the digital rig within the HX Stomp like this: - Main L/R - distortion effects - compression (if desired) - Send/Return (FX Loop L) - Delay - Reverb - Main L/R Here is a video on how to do this from Jason Sadites - ruclips.net/video/doDidUSGRMo/видео.html
@@ryansnydercg You. are. the.man. I just got this (new to me) '83 Concert amp back from it's "first servicing" in 40 years and couldn't figure out the "effect splitting" I described above. The "secret", for me, was putting in that - Send/Return (FX Loop L) Thanks, Subscribed.
Nice video! It'd be great if you showed that you can also touch the footswitch to assign them
Completely forgot about that one!! Thank you for the reminder

Yeah HX Edit is a godsend. Especially early on

That’s why I bought mine. I used an Axe Fx 2 for years but it was so hard to gig with. The HX Stomp does what I need perfectly

Yeah man for sure!! Glad it was helpful

This is such a great tutorial, thank you, answered so many basic questions that I couldn't find in other videos. thank you!
Of course!!

hey ryan great tutorial!! What switch toppers are you using and are they reasonably solid?
I’ve used these for the last year and they are solid - amzn.to/45XGlYa

Hi. For stereo use do you need a TSR cable in the output?
No you can use two TS cables in the left and right output
What product are those switch button covers???
Hello! They are these guys - amzn.to/3T9mG2J
Hey man care to share your stomp xl presets?
I have a set of country ones on my website that I’m always adding to. Which ones did you have in mind
Thanks!
For sure!!
