It would slow down the fire rate and increase the likelihood of misfire/accidents. Be careful not to sub-optimize, there's usually a reason for most of the parts when it comes to artillery.

Also Hollywood has distorted people's perception of gunfire; especially handguns and rifles. The sounds in movies are very much drawn out and given deeper resonance, where an actual gunshot is more like a firecracker. A very quick and sharp sound.
