The reason why StarTropics isn't remembered is probably because it was never even released in Japan.

That’s not the reason it failed. Startropics was an nes game sold while the Super Nintendo was out. Plus the sequal was marketed poorly.
Opinionated It was released 9 months before the snes in the west though.
I played so much Startropics. So much. Useta go to sleep and dream I was playing. After that when I was grown for a while I thought it was Zelda I was playing.. but not for to long.. I'm not that dense.
Guys just realized something: Zelda BOTW copied the place only wamen can go then the protagonist changes clothes. Lol
I like that Nintendo put this game on the Mini NES.
But you need the letter in order to know the frequency of the submarine (unless you already know)

Dude! My mom used to play the hell out of this game! She flipped when she found out about the sequel(she didn't care for it as much but she still loved it). I totally forgot about this game until I saw the title of this video since my mom was the only one that played it. I would love to see a ST3 if only to play it for her(she passed away in '09) or anything for it. Next to Zelda, StarTropics was her favorite! Great video and don't lose hope, Nintendo could surprise us all one day and bring Mike back! 8D

I've been wanting to talk about this game for a long time! People would always talk about how Mother is this gem of an forgotten Nintendo franchise, but I'd argue StarTropics was even more forgotten!

***** Startropics is eassssily one of my favorite NES games and while I did vote for him in the Smash Bros poll, it got me thinking... He would just end up having a similar moveset to Ness... I mean, Yo-yo based attacks? Check. Baseball Bat. Check. Even the fireball and freeze power ups he gets are on Lucas with PK Fire and PK Freeze. :( But the one attack Ness and Lucas will never have is Mike's crossdressing.

I'm surprised no one ever talks about this game, besides you, because I had a genuinely fun time with it. Here's hoping one day, we'll get a sequel...

That part where you chant the spell to wake up Bananette? LOVED IT! Should be the extra track to this game's soundtrack. (Or maybe even the titles screen theme).

I love this game. Surprisingly, despite being made by Nintendo, it was not released in Japan. Probably why the series kind of died. I do wish for a third entry in the series hopefully in the style of A Link Between Worlds

The fact that Gulliver makes a reference to this game in Animal Crossing New Horizons in the year 2020 shows how Nintendo haven’t forgotten about this gem.
Not only that, but those Nintendo Newsletters on the switch news thing always promote Startropics on the "10 NES games to check out" articles.

I'm pretty sure the idea shecola was the entire inspiration for the Gerudo quest in BotW.
I think the absolute funniest bit/joke I've ever seen in one of your videos has to be the banana bit in this video. I enjoyed such a hearty chuckle when you inspected the banana after eating it and said "banana's not good".
Surprised you didn't segue into a bananaette joke somehow. Not disappointed. Just surprised.

This was the first video game I ever played, and it taught me lessons about puzzle-solving and progression that I still remember to this day. This game's soundtrack is my default when it comes to humming random songs. And I would also freaking love to see Mike in Smash.
2:09 Love the music choice there for that gag. Overall this was quite an entertaining review.
I think the one thing about Startropics that made it so great and really gets no mention, is the amount of personality the game has. Yeah sure, a lot of it is silly and makes NO sense. But that was what video games (and hell even most cartoons) were like back then. And Startropics did it so well. The game is absolutely FILLED with memorable moments that were downright iconic at the time. That is really what the second one missed. It chose to just kind of fanfic history instead of come up with its own little odd but endearing moments like the first.
This is up there with some of the most defining games in my time playing video games. I had the letter and I had to dip it in water because in the early 90s there was no other way you were getting that code. It did suck though when you wanted to replay it and didn't have the letter anymore.
my pick was Definitely Isaac. yeah, Isaac. you know, golden sun? the best RPG of all time? nobody remembers to give golden sun love and that makes me sad.
Personally, I'm more of a fan of Dark Dawn.
Played this a lot as a kid but never beat it until a few years ago when I got back into my old NES games. Absolutely fantastic and a huge recommendation alongside Crystalis. I was playing Zoda's Revenge for a while too recently but it's really trippy adjusting to the physics changes after getting used to Startropics having those grid-based stiff jumps and turns.

I know your pain. One of my favorite games of all time is Summoner 2 on the PS2, I haven't quite been waiting as long for a sequel that will never come, but I think almost everyone has a game they love that they know is never coming back.

This was one of my favorite games growing up as a kid, although I didnt beat it till I was muchhh older. "Its doesnt care about your feelings" and I never had the note... My parents always threw the box and stuff out right away..

my mom had many consoles growing up, including an nes, and really loved startropics. her save was like, right at the end, im surprised it kept it all these years. it also had her dead brother's save from when he was still alive... and some dude named daniel. idk daniel. probably one of her exes
i worded this like she was dead. she is not dead. she is alive and kicking, but has severe arthritis from said game consoles

You were half-right with Zoda's Revenge being the last game on the NES. It was the very last licensed game to be released EXCLUSIVELY on the NES. Wario's Woods also came out on the Super Nintendo.

Aww, no mention of the whale? That was one of my favorite parts of the game and exemplifies how the non-dungeon content was surprisingly super interesting compared to most RPG-like games of the time. Also, I'd actually urge you to play Star Tropics 2 again sometime if you haven't lately; I used to feel the same way you do even though ST2 was the only one of the two i owned rather than just renting, but later going back and re-playing them both on Virtual Console I found myself liking it even more, really appreciating just how much more varied the whole game was compared to ST1.
Also, heck yeah man. My initial votes were for Simon Belmont and Bomberman but once I realized they wanted first-party options Mike Jones was my go-to guy.
10/10 I loved this video...
Mike Jones and Captain Rainbon would awesome in Smash. I really like it when they put obscure characters! :D
