  • This Electric van is powered fully by the array of solar panels that it has on it's roof, with a custom build mechanism the solar panels are able to slide out, and tilt to get the most sun exposure possible. With a two battery banks equaling 120 KWH's of energy they are able to power the vans motor, plus do things in van life that most other vans are not capable of, including using a two burner induction stove, and having an on demand hot water system. Joel and Keegan the duo behind Route Del Sol are currently doing a trip with this renewable energy powered tiny home from Alaska to Argentina, They have already gone more than 4000 km powered fully on renewable energy, when I met up with them in Vancouver. Their goal for this trip is to be able to push the boundaries of renewable and sustainable technology, and help to make this more sustainable way of transportation more popular, they also plan on making a documentary about their trip, as well as an online film series. They also hope to be able to make contacts all around the world with people who have ideas and are wanting to help, and connecting them with people who need help transitioning into more sustainable lifestyles.

Would be super cool to see this on something like an old COE camperbuild, with lighter chassis. Can’t wait to get out of school to start a project like that! Thanks for the inspiration!

It's a double edged sword, I've been to many places where I've felt that it would be rude for me to decline the hospitality and lacked the language skills to explain. But I always feel this way, I've slept on bamboo floors and been woken up by the family dog when my comfortable materress, pillows, duvet and diesel heater are just meters away!
    Also my first van was a joint project with a friend, love the massive divider between the beds, we did something similar to leave no room for misinterpretation!

  • @elisabethm9655
    @elisabethm9655 5 лет назад +1

    Finally! A totally solar RV, and I like the extendable wings design; it will also create shaded camping space in sunnier climes. I looked on their site and saw that the charge to run ratio is pretty steep. It must be very slow going now, given the solar availability at this time of year and your current latitude - mix in the crummy weather and it looks like they're going to going at a snail's pace for a while. I sure hope the winter weather doesn't catch up with this project. Perhaps the start of a trip like this should be scheduled for earlier in the year. Solar timing aside, the overall concept of the vehicle is brilliant, and just having the guts to do it is inspiring. These guys are real pioneers!
    It would be nice if they could make it to the RTR down in Quartzsite, Arizona by the middle of January because I think they'd be a super hit - but I don't see how they could do it unless they charge up at e-stations overnight ... And I really, really hope they will be safe traveling through Mexico and Central America - they might consider joining up with a couple of other rigs, because they might be going slow enough to be a tempting irritation to someone.
    Thanks for posting this one, Forrest!

    *Forrest Stevens* Love this project and design! I wish I had some extra resources, I would send these guys a 12 VDC/120VAC Electric blanket to keep them warm! I swear by them, I also like those Chinese Diesel heaters that are knockoffs of what truckers use to heat their cabs efficiently and safely. The downside of those is they cost around $200 USD. Probably not your cup of tea being what your project is, but it would be an excellent backup. Mine only uses 150ml of fuel per hour, and the exhaust is vented outside and runs very clean, almost scent free. Anyway, get an electric blanket! And happy trails guys!

    wow, total badass van! The only thing that I would change is the inductive stove for slow cooker, for sake of batteries life ofc, and because you simply drop food there and forget about it.

    I'd love to see what happens when the wind blows... Also would have loved more about the vehicle itself and what its capabilities/specifications are.

    Great vid/project. I really want to do this on my narrow boat, it should be a lot easier since I only need a small motor to propel the boat (slowly). Probably have wind generators as well as solar

    Love you guys....... great stuff.... you could stick a light single axle trailer on the back & put a heap more solar panels on it..... maybe a battery bank under them!..... also you could put up a wind charger at night........ I'm on my electric scooter every day i can' or bike & i just love saving the planet...... I'm going off grid within the year no doubt about that..... it's guys like you that makes these dreams come true....... so keep on trucking and one day we will clean up this world once and for all#####......as you say everyone talking but not enough doing..... way to gooooo.....

    I like the solar array set up. I am by no means a green person. However I do appreciate your video. I still enjoy gasoline engines, but I'm open to alternative power. Thanks for making this video. Guys good luck on your journey.

      Gasoline engines are crap compared to electric motors. Wasteful, inefficient, loud, low torque/power output, etc. Electric motors are better than gasoline in so many ways, not just counting price and ease of maintenance (no moving parts).

      @@The_Ballo in the make up process. but how about in long term use? batteries can be used long term whereas gasoline is dug up underground with limited resource only. the prolonged use of gasoline in each engine far exceeds the carbon build up of a battery in production. not to mention batteries can be recycled. accept it, gasoline has met its end. its an old fuel source that most companies makes billions of off.

      @@The_Ballo That study has already been falsified many times. As such a study is based on certain assumptions, these assumptions are key to the results. In the study they combined a set of assumptions that always assumed the most beneficial for combustion engines. Furthermore, they used outdated data, e.g. the energy mix of Germany in 2015. If you get en EV now it would start with the energy mix of 2020 and get better over time, as the mix is constantly changing towards a larger share of renewables.
