  • @elisabethm9655
    @elisabethm9655 6 лет назад +1

    Finally! A totally solar RV, and I like the extendable wings design; it will also create shaded camping space in sunnier climes. I looked on their site and saw that the charge to run ratio is pretty steep. It must be very slow going now, given the solar availability at this time of year and your current latitude - mix in the crummy weather and it looks like they're going to going at a snail's pace for a while. I sure hope the winter weather doesn't catch up with this project. Perhaps the start of a trip like this should be scheduled for earlier in the year. Solar timing aside, the overall concept of the vehicle is brilliant, and just having the guts to do it is inspiring. These guys are real pioneers!
    It would be nice if they could make it to the RTR down in Quartzsite, Arizona by the middle of January because I think they'd be a super hit - but I don't see how they could do it unless they charge up at e-stations overnight ... And I really, really hope they will be safe traveling through Mexico and Central America - they might consider joining up with a couple of other rigs, because they might be going slow enough to be a tempting irritation to someone.
    Thanks for posting this one, Forrest!

      Gasoline engines are crap compared to electric motors. Wasteful, inefficient, loud, low torque/power output, etc. Electric motors are better than gasoline in so many ways, not just counting price and ease of maintenance (no moving parts).

      @@The_Ballo That study has already been falsified many times. As such a study is based on certain assumptions, these assumptions are key to the results. In the study they combined a set of assumptions that always assumed the most beneficial for combustion engines. Furthermore, they used outdated data, e.g. the energy mix of Germany in 2015. If you get en EV now it would start with the energy mix of 2020 and get better over time, as the mix is constantly changing towards a larger share of renewables.

    *Forrest Stevens* Love this project and design! I wish I had some extra resources, I would send these guys a 12 VDC/120VAC Electric blanket to keep them warm! I swear by them, I also like those Chinese Diesel heaters that are knockoffs of what truckers use to heat their cabs efficiently and safely. The downside of those is they cost around $200 USD. Probably not your cup of tea being what your project is, but it would be an excellent backup. Mine only uses 150ml of fuel per hour, and the exhaust is vented outside and runs very clean, almost scent free. Anyway, get an electric blanket! And happy trails guys!

    QUESTION: How much does this solar system weigh?
    Do you have a written confirmation from the vehicle manufacturer that you are allowed to do this with the specified roof load of the vehicle? Because I am planning a 1800 Wp solar system on the vehicle and need help in this regard. From the weight, I would not estimate my planned solar system heavier.

    Nice setup! I bet all that power is needed to charge the big battery packs on the Van so no much left for the kitchen appliances!!!

    You can add vertical axis wind generator as well for those cold days with strong winds and no sun

    That's way above the average off-grid homes, even the stationary ones. That amount of power generation for a residential system is insane!

      It's a setup that charges the van's drive batteries even if there's no charging station nearby.

    I have these very efficient USB charged hand warmers, and they are great for putting in your bed when it’s cold.

    Fantastic video. Since your van is fully electric and you have excess electricity generated would it make sense to utilise some of that for heating rather than freezing and have to put on extra clothing. I guess your van can go on and on until your battery runs out so in a sense it is better than the conventional electric vehicle. I am passionate about permaculture, free energy generation, recycling and eco-shelter construction. Well done and I intend to look more into your videos to pick up more tips. My wish is to start a community project in Borneo island which incorporates all the disciplines of a moneyless set up. The idea to free people especially young people from the shackles of the cruel ongoing system. This can then be replicated anywhere in the world.
