    8.8 is the bolt shear strength , stainless bolts are marked with either A2 or A4 depending on the grade

    • @100SteveB
      @100SteveB 5 лет назад +7

      I agree with that. Plus, stainless steel may not rust, but stainless steel nuts and bolts do have a nasty habit of cold welding themselves together when you tighten them up.

    I've got to do exactly the same job on my wife's '03 plate Cooper tomorrow. You don't need to keep taking the battery on and off to open the boot hatch, there a manual cable release under the rear seat, just pull up the rear seat base and its clearly visible.

    • @stuart121972

      Early Mini’s didn’t have the internal release. I retrofitted one to the 02 plate Cooper we used to have which is now my stepsons car.

    • @philbrad2006
      @philbrad2006 5 лет назад

      What a complete pig of a job that was, centre mounting plate had one 10mm bolts totally rounded off when I came to it. End up taking 5 of the 6 bolts out, levering down the plate, loosening the rubber mount holding bolts, removing one of the rubber mounts and wriggling the exhaust out of the rubber mounts. Refitting was done centre mount first, then rear and finally front. On the upside the rear hangers came off the car without a hitch, bolt threads were in great shape. And yes, its probably the heaviest exhaust I've ever put on a car.

      Because impact guns snap bolts

    • @malcolmyoung7866
      @malcolmyoung7866 5 лет назад +3

      James has a battery operated one...he has used it a few times but I think he prefers to use the hand tools as most people wo watch his videos don't have impact guns etc...so they can relate to how it's done. Mostly, when it comes to bolt removal, the initial 'loosening is best done by hand tools then the remainder 'zipped off' with an impact, caveat being that even loosened bolts can snap and depending on where they are it's best NOT to use an impact until you are absolutely sure it won't shear off un necessarily..

    Regarding the back-box exhaust mounts,i changed mine twice.the 1st set was destroyed after 3-4 moths.They are very prone to damage,so i filled the 2nd set with silicone for high temperatures used in gaskets,let it dry for a week and installed them afterwards.It is now 4 years and they still are perfect.The silicone is still absorbing the movement of the back-box and holds it in place securely.

    You have some corrosion in your boot, it is common for the high level brake light to leak as it has a stupid foam seal, the seal was not available on its own so i used clear silicon to seal it up and a second hand light. The water seems to find its way into the brake light unit once the seal has failed knackering it if you leave it too long! good video

    Problem with these cheap pattern exhausts is they just don't last. I have one on my 05 Cooper that wasn't fitted that long ago and it's in a bit of a state. You'll probably find the 'stainless' tip will start rusting pretty quick too.
    When mine starts blowing, I'll be fitting a proper catback for sure.
    I guess one short term bonus however is they tend to be a bit less restrictive and sound better than the OE one so that's a plus.

    I bought this exact same exhaust for my Mini...Except mine doesn't have a centre silencer and it was a bit cheaper. But mine didn't come with the exhaust tip (have to buy it separately) so that's probably why.

    Brilliant video get your hands dirty save a fortune.. but get the car as high as you can buy some concrete blocks and bricks makes it loads easy when your not struggling underneath....

    Be careful continuously using the key in the barrell as its only designed for emergency use. The small rod will snap eventually.

    I've done that exhaust job - prefer your exhaust (especially the way the tip sits snug to the body recess) to the one I bought. Make / supplier name pls.
