  • Sometimes the child lock on Subarus gets stuck in the "Lock" position and the door won't open from the inside. Here is how I fixed mine; your results may vary, follow this at your own risk. Done on a 2016 Subaru Outback, but should be similar to Subaru Outback 2015 2017 2018 2019 and Subaru Legacy 2015 2016 2017 2018 and 2019 since all are built on a similar platform.

Thank you so much for this! It was short and somewhat uncut which is actually quite helpful. Also the cat appearance was 10/10.

I bought a new Forester in 2014 when my daughter was 2 months old. The childproof lock on the driver’s side wouldn’t budge, but it didn’t really bother me. Now, my daughter is 10 and complains she can’t open the door. Thanks to your video, I fixed it in less than 10 minutes!

just fixed both doors' child locks with your vid. thanks a lot! i didn't have to completely disconnect the cords, I managed to re-set the door cable while it was still connected

Same, just opened up the panel as shown in the video. I then played with the door handle on the inside and the child lock switch loosened up.

Great video, is this a permanent fix or will this eventually get set to lock again? I had this happen to me on my 2015 Subaru Outback and when I tried to disable the child lock the lever snapped off. I had to take to the dealer unfortunately to get it fixed.

Hi: the root cause of the issue is that the lower cable ball can get pulled out when opening the door lever, and then does not return to its starting position when releasing the door handle. The lower cable ball should snap into place on the inside of the door lever. This ensures the door lever pushes the cable back when released. But the ball does not snap back into its intended position (something has broken) and if not resolved, the problem reoccurs

Update: there is actually supposed to a return spring on the lower cable. Reconnected and works as it should

You're cheating! The door is already open. How do you unlatch the child safety with the door locked and shut?
