Thank you so much for this review. It’s EXACTLY what I was looking for. I’m much more interested in hearing an educated audiophile’s impressions rather than hearing someone reading off specs. Along with assessing the pros and cons of different headphones and music preferences, it’s also important to consider one’s system.
I own the 800S and a Cary 300SEI integrated amplifier with Synergistic Research Blue Fuses, Grayhill selector switch, two Bybee iQSEs, 1 NOS TUNG-SOL Made In USA 6sn7 (preamp tube), 2 NOS BRIMAR Made In England 6sn7 (driver tubes), and 2 Genalex Golden Lion 300B (power tubes). Stuart Jones (Chapman Audio) is going to upgrade it through the roof with silver bypass caps, Orange fuses, and other magic.
I’m using a ToneKraft cable from Audio Envy that complements the 800S beautifully. I can’t even listen with a stock cable after being spoiled. And Captain, President of Audio Envy, is releasing V.3 of the ToneKraft in a couple months. He promised it will impart an even more analog character and golden halo to the sound without sounding artificial. I’ll be first in line.
But while the 800S sounds great in my system, it can sound awful with components that don’t complement its sonic signature. I was over at a friend’s apartment last week listening to my 800S through his solid state McIntosh integrated amplifier. And it sounded clinical and lifeless.

It is my preference over the others. While I really like the Arya, I never got friends with the 800s. Though still miss the opportunity to have used a Tube or hybrid. So who knows :)
Love the HEDDphone out of the RME ADI 2 DAC fs > THXAAA789 stack and really want to audition the HEDD with the Violectric V280 in mid future.

Got the Arya few weeks back and your comparative review surely impacted my decision. I will say it was one of the best decisions ever audio expenditure wise. I really wish the build quality was better like some beyerdynamic cans. it would make it a 10/10 product but hey, nothing is perfect.

    • @nortonfamily6711
      @nortonfamily6711 3 года назад +2

Honestly, while the Arya's build isn't the greatest compared to other similarly priced headphones from other manufacturers, its still built relatively well. Doesn't feel like they're gonna fall apart even if you drop them. The only components that are actually plastic are the earcups themselves, and even then the plastic is of high quality. (The yokes are actually hollow aluminum, which you can tell by flicking them with your fingernail.) Build quality is far better than earlier Hifimans at least.

Great review as the former 4 way shootout! No overuse of fancy audiophile words other reviewers like to do.
Considered the HEDD, but as one other person said here, confort must be the number one spot. As i'm wearing headphones for hours on end everything above ~500g is just too much to be comfortable. And this one is even above 700g, isn't it?
The Focal Clear besides my Arya is around 450g and although it is nearly as comfortable as the Arya for me, it shouldn't be more heavy than this.

So although the Denafrips is better in terms of smoothness and naturalness, I also read that some reviewers find R2R is better for classical and jazz, while chip dacs are better for speed and dynamics (in this price range. But you are right, if I don’t try it I won’t know, I maybe will. I'm curious are you a musician? I haven't seen too many reviewers talking about the importance of timbre and tonality vs all the other stuff. For me it's so important. If an instrument doesn't sound like they do in real life I have such a hard time enjoying it. I guess if I was listening to all electronic it wouldn't be a problem but as I mostly listen to instrumental (lots of snarky puppy and stuff like that) I love to hear good timbre. I have a theory that musicians might listen to to things like timbre and tonality differently than others. I don't know maybe I'm wrong. Anyways great review!

I am on the neverending quest to find the best timbre and tonality while still retaining nice technicalities lol, especially for piano as I play myself. I think it is different in a way. If something doesn't sound right to me I don't like it (I had the Nightowls for a very short time and they sounded waaaaay off).

How is 718g even comparable to 400 or 360g? Mids 'distance' on Arya comes from audiophiles bizzare idea that you have to use HEADPHONE amp to drive headphones like they have special ability for low floor noise or low impendance output, thats already there with any modern high quality integrated amp. Give 6-7+ watts of pure class A power (bassicly 100w+ AB class amp) to Arya and you'll have essentially Stax + full body/range & true dynamics.

To be fair, Arya is a waste of money. You look at the reviews, try them maybe, you buy them, burn them in for 150-200h and in time you find out that when you reach for a pair of headphones, 90% of the time you won't pick Arya. I didn't realized why until now, but I think you are 100% right. The fact that I need to always turn the volume up and down, and let my brain adjust for the volume, will register in your brain as a mediocre experience. My other headphones are DT880 (600ohm), T50 RP MK3, and HD600, so on paper Arya should stand head and shoulder above the rest, yet HD 600 and DT880 are my most used headphones (in that order) with T50 on 3rd place.
Bottom line Arya loses not to Hedd or other headphones around that price, but it loses to headphones that cost 10 time less. Does perform better in some areas? Sure, Arya can do miracles but miracles made nice stories, not good experience. For example in JL002 - Kobra Ensemble: Summer Rain (Ternheim) at some point the voices start resonate and Arya was the only headphone that was able to reproduce the very small differences in the voices so the resonance wasn't present. Again cool, impressive story... not an impressive overall experience.

Arya has better speed than Heddphone? And hd800s better detail retrieval? Lol. Bro, you are high. I have these 3, and the only advantage of hd800 over the hedd is stage and maging and arya is just better in staging and bass.

Tbh I was expecting the HEDD's to obliterate the Arya's in attack & decay based on some posts I've seen but that didn't seem to be my experience. Curious what is your equipment chain?

@@MidFiGuy i have recently purchased the topping A90-D90 stack and heddphone is way better than both- Hedd>hd800(original)>arya in details. Even in my old tube system ECP dsha L2 hedd is better but the gap between the hd800 seems closer since hd800 really shines on this setup.

Based on other reviews, the Hedd was being said to be almost at par with the LCD4 in detail retrieval (headphoneshow, resolve reviews). On soundstage, the hedd CEO was quoted saying they engineered the cups to be large and the heddphones to be that big so that they would shine on soundstage (Canjam 2020). The weight had to be that way so that they wont compromise on perfomance and soundstage. On speed, AMT is considered to be fast, the design allows for increased air velocity and they produce sound with a mechanism that can be likened to an accordian, so I was quite surprised you mentioned the Arya to be quite fast.
So now i am guessing its all subjective, I will need to audition them out to take my pick.
I had already talked to scan uk for a Hedd & RME DAC 2 bundle pre order and will soon be on my way to make the payment. So I am still on the fence.
Anyway, the source, RME ADI 2 DAC > PHONITOR X / THX 789, MidFi Guy i would be looking forward to what you have to say on DACs

Not bad, but they just look ridiculous, in comparison the Abyss 1266 Phi TC looks like normal headphones, they really need to change the shape, make it less bulky and big and possibly reduce weight from this thing.

this headphone is good for that music and that headphone is good for this music. 😂 in short every audio equipment is good for something. there is nothing bad. everything can be rated in between 8.7 and 9.2 out of 10. Why over the years reviewers have become goody goody to everything. Why can't they give clear ratings and preference or group test winner or ranking ? Is it too much internet exposure or are you afraid of not getting review samples. 😂

i listened to all type of songs and music for years and owned few endgame audiophile headphones and using hd800s now ( spend around 5K on audio gear ) , what i see and think it's true that music and songs is ALWAYS after few days or weeks for In her best condition gonna make you bored and need to change audio gear again to enjoy them little again , and this circle will never end music always gonna be boring.
In fact, from my personal opinion about my personal experience.
The only thing that whenever I listen to it all year with any cheap headphone even if it was broken I do not feel bored is to hear the Quran

trenbolone i agree, i have the 800, they sound of course very very good, but i think they are so detailed that at one point you start to listen only the small details and the sound of the headphone instead of the music itself.
Maybe I enjoy Music more from my cheap car system because i have no expectation of quality.

Accurate does not always equal enjoyable, like how a music studio sounds flat and accurate versus a home stereo setup that is fun and exciting or more relaxed.
